I find myself spending way too much money, more than I have / should spend on steam sales.

I'm so OCD I feel like I have to get everything once its in bundles or on low enough sale because one day I "might" want to play it.

Also steam achievements and trading cards add to the OCD factor.

How do you guys resist your gamers instinct collectors OCD?

How do you decide which games are in and which games are out? No matter the sale?

This is especially true due to the upcoming winter sale.

TL;DR - Spending too much money I don't have on games I don't play and gifts because they're on sale. How do I stop?

Steam sale and christmas bonus from my new work are a baaaad combination... Well, good for you cause I also pick um some stuff to gift away ;-)

The only thing that stops me from spending even more money is that there are a lot of genres I don't really like that much, like FPS... And that I feel kinda cheated if it's "only" 50% off while a lot of stuff is 75% off ;-)

simple if the games you want go on sale at a decent price you know it might be on sale again in a few weeks for winter sale for maybe an even better price

Being broke helps. Also, proximity to Winter Sales help a ton for this particular Black Friday and proximity type of sale.

This month, I made an agreement with my bank account to not buy any bundles all December.

Then Yogscast starts up a charity humble bundle.

Here's how I did it:

  • Don't have money to spend freely.
  • Empty Steam Wallet in support of Fortixember
  • Decide to delay purchases until Winter Sale, when next paycheck is in.

Cut your credit card into pieces, burn them and bury the ashes deep inside graveyard...

Well, hardly gaming helps. I bought enough games on Steam that I haven't played and were later cheaper elsewhere (like on bundles) that I only rarely buy on Steam. I did make a decision at some point to stop buying so many games I don't play and games to gift, but that helped only a little. Also didn't help that I found out about Bundle of Holding so now I'm also buying RPG books I'll never read.

Stick to wishlist.
I think it's a blessing for me to not interested in any new releases.

Only buy from wishlist and don't add things you won't play right away

By not buying. I only use Steam for activating games and giveaways. I don't really buy digitally, maybe except for the rare Humble Bundle, since it was a donation as much as a purchase.

For me its working like that: I see all the games I have in my library, how much time I have played that games and if I finished it.
So I notice that more than 50% is with only some minutes played, even nice games. So from now on, try to think/do like that. Look all the games in your library before buyin' some more. Sry for the bad english.

I only buy games I just want to play, but then again, I consider if that amount of money would be spent elsewhere.

For example, through "smart" trading, I have been able to get about 9 games with only about $30. (EVEN WITH THE SALE, you will never be able to get those games for $30, one of them being dishonored (though I didn't get it on steam, got it for 3 pounds on gamefly yet I'm from Singapore :p) only with effort you'll get what you want
