Some games like Minecraft, League of Legends, SAS 4, Pokemon TCG, Contract Wars, Freefall Tournament, PokeMMO, etc.
It doesn't have to be popular, because I know some of the games that I've mentioned are not even known by you.

Paladins getting into closed beta is pretty easy if you subscribe to their YT channel(and leave it afterwards) .
Its TF2 modes and MOBAlike gameplay with skills and "cards"(items).

Paladins looks cool :D
TF2 is a steam game though, and class based shooter is not my strongest suit :(

W/e floats your boat xD Still most of classes are "pew pew till they die" with only 2 or 3 that got more specific roles. But hey.. have fun w/e you pick xD

I don't really like mmorpg though, it's too grinding. :(

Not all MMOs are grindy. Guild Wars 1 & 2 and The Secret World are 3 examples of non-grindy MMOs (though GW 1 is as good as dead these days). Ultima Online can also be played in a very non-grindy way.

Most of the NCSoft games don't come to Steam, only Guild Wars is atm.
Lineage 2 has been on Steam at some point, but got removed rather soon after its release.

There are a number of mobile games that might qualify. For instance, there are lots of micro-transactiony war games. If, like me, you strongly dislike those, there are also a number of pretty good app versions of board games.

(Speaking of which, you didn't technically say that you were looking for computer games. So yes, I know of a ton. :) )

Sorry, I didn't mean to be unhelpful (although the board game bit was a joke).

Have you seen what's available DRM-free through GOG? I'm not too familiar with their catalogue. But they do have the first multiplayer thing I thought to check, 'Terraria'.

Comment has been collapsed.

Here's a list of the co-op games available on GOG. There are quite a few, actually.

Permalink

Thanks, but I see that some of the games are steam games.
Are you sure it can be played outside steam?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know that GOG is not selling Steam games. If you see them there then they are DRM free, and can be run without a Steam client. That's GOG's whole business model: they only sell DRM free software.

I don't know how the multiplayer servers work for all those, though. The only one I've tried is Terraria, for which the multiplayer is peer-to-peer. It doesn't require Steam or anything else (though you may need to mess with your router a little).

I played the old version (end of 90's), it was surprisingly fun, even better in team (with special bricks, you get powers to help yourself or a teammate, or to mess with an opponent's game). Never tried the newer one, but I probably should ! who said backlog ?
