Yeah, thats annoying. Even when I ask in description to stay online for a moment or just to try to activate game asap and then give me feedback... Nah, who reads descriptions, let's enter as many GA as they can and claim game someday later :P

I do read descriptions, and even though I didn't give many games away, I always tried to contact the winner personally. It feels a lot better (for me at least), because I can present him/her the gift, and they can't just open their win list and get the key from a textbox (hehe). So I'd recommend you not to send them the key first, but find them all personally. Of course after I got contact with them I sent they key through SG, but only for the records :)

Steam shows a globe icon, if they are online using the browser, and shows a phone, if they are online from phone only, but yeah you are right BTW. Also isn't that funny, that we constantly read threads, where OPs whine, because they won a game, but the GA creator didn't send the key/gift instantly, while until now I haven't seen a single thread, where GA creators have problem with winners.

That feel when the winner activates the game, doesn't click on the fracking "received", but plays dota 2 instead

I guess this thread has now a reason to exist since you wrote that comment. There is one tiny bit I can relate to. People winning and not saying thanks right after they win, considering they are online of course. Why are we always the ones that have to go first and run after them... I haven't been raised like that.

There may be ways to improve the process and encourage users to do the right thing. Something along these lines of... user has 1 week to activate as long as they haven't seen the key. Once they do (that is, open the screen where it's displayed), they have 1 day to activate and mark as received or not received. Failing to do so within the given time frame would end in a suspension. Thoughts?

Usually the winner is happy about winning a game, and excitedly waits the key to appear or creator to add him/her. Seriously, this is the case :) Unless you stated that they should add you, it's possible that he's also waiting for you to initiate (If he doesn't accept to friend's invite or removes / blocks you, you can ask for a reroll after 7 days passed from the GA's end)
Or you can always send the key / gift in an email. Or you can email the winner first, and if he replies, you can send the gift - some people do so, if they'd like to have the feeling of actually talking to someone, and not just dumping the game to one's email

Sometimes I check SG on my phone, and can't activate keys until after work or something.

Yarg. Best part is seeing that at least one winner has been online twice since they won.
