No, I'm not one month late with the news.

Personally, I'm kinda puzzled about this. They were making steady money while on Steam and pulling 60k players regularly. I'm curious to see how the things will change once they're Epic exclusive.

UPDATE:

"Update: While Epic’s original statement strongly hinted Rocket League would be pulled from Steam, the company now says it will announce "long-term plans" for the game in the future"

I do not understand the English language anymore.

Uhm.. Pardon me? I don't know how exactly both of you misinterpreted my statement, but I don't get why either he wants to check my profile then or why you saw a reason to insult me.

But ok..let's take it slowly:
I wrote "Bye, bye", because at the time of my posting the given information was that RL gets purchase disabled/removed from Steam store soon. I added "my most played game" as a short expression for how much I like the game and if you'd like to elaborate also as a hint, how popular the game at Steam is (because I'm surely not the only one).

Now I can only think of three misinterpretations:

  1. bragging? Well, 800 hours aren't much for a game which was released nearly 4 years ago. There are many community members with more hours in various games. A decade back when I was playing a MMORPG, I reached those hours within a year..
  2. that I meant that I would never play it again because of this decision. I didn't state that. I might be playing it again if they add new gameplay. The last time I played it for a few matches was when they introduced Dropshot (which is already two years ago).
If Caligu1a really wants to check for that, I could also trick him by using my PS4 copy. But honestly I don't care, because I didn't even "promise" anything.
  3. that I would plan to play another game more than RL to remove it from the top spot? Nah, as I said I restrain myself from MP games. So that won't change.

In the end your reactions seem to state more about you than about me.

Yes, usually you can continue playing removed/purchase disabled games. If you need a server connection it depends on how long the dev/publisher is supporting it (or if they stop supporting dedicated servers, few even add an offline mode).
This isn't known regarding Rocket League yet, but my goodbye was only referred to the Steam storefront.
Thanks though!

I mean it has to be profitable for Epic to trow money at devs again - and the price had to be quit decent for devs to agree for something like that..
Who does that ? I mean who buys out a company that is doing well ? ( I Suppose Rocket league was doing fine ?)

My guess, but probably Epic is again gambling with money and trowing astronomical numbers towards Psyonix hoping and praying that Rocket League brings the money back to them

I can see why epic bought it. I don't see the reasoning behind making it Epic-Exclusive, which has a chance to probably alienate a large percent of the players who would have to repurchase it on Epic before buying new DLC (if any new DLC come out, that is).

I think it's possible that future DLC may be available through the ingame shop instead. I don't believe that Psyonix would make DLC exclusive to the Epic store... As far as PC goes, nobody cares about other platforms because you actually need to buy the machines for that, while Epic is just a download. As far as people who only own/play on PC care, if it is only available in the Epic Store on PC, it is an Epic exclusive.
And not even a timed exclusivity.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well as long as i'm conserned , epic has no intention in leveling up and improving to match steam's platform level cause if they do they won't be able to sustain any profit with their current limited revenue share split . if they succeed then the pc gaming as a whole will change from having an open market and a platforme level of service quality to a closed market controlled by one service provider across the board and the whole gaming experience on pc will be limited to purchasing the game and downloading it through a launcher with no extra features to get people excited to abandon piracy since both legit games and pirated ones will be offering the same exact service , heck pirated versions of the games will be much better wityh no drm , so yeah the babies that keep supporting this and saying it's just another launcher will bring the end to a good era of pc gaming that valve spent years to establish and improve

"Epic exclusivity" always refers to PC, since taking consoles in mind it falls apart (Metro Exodus for example).

Not that PC-wise it doesn't fall appart either with people saying Epic Exclusive for all that are just not on Steam, like Outer Worlds, conviently ommitting it's also coming to the Windows store.

They have less contrarians on the EGS Forums... wait...
Well, once they have it, they'll have less of them... since they've most likely had their account hijacked for the 4th time that month.
Though, it's fine since consumers gain something... wait, the prices are higher in poorer countries due to their payment methods... fuck..
No worries, we still have exclusives... you know, healthy competition!
Also, we have a CEO that shittalks customers and publicly makes ultimatums to its competitor.

I mean, if breaking EU laws, having shit security, suspicious ties to totalitarian governments, PR nightmares, lack of features, payment issues and other shit is shallow, then what the fuck isn't?

It's frustrating at this point.

I'd love competition. I hoped Epic could provide it. Fact is they haven't yet. They've been anti-consumer and there are people still supporting them. It's ironic too, since you call people like me contrarians, yet here you are, arguing against illegal practices and anti-consumer behavior (not to mention unethical workplaces and shit, but who cares, amirite!)

So did I. I'm guessing there's a reason you used the past tense there. Competition is good. EGS isn't competitive.
Why would I proverbially shoot you? It's fine to have altering opinions. The frustration part in my comment was about the excuses and reasoning itself. For starters, due to the hot water tencent is in with China, EGS isn't available there. The store itself is pretty badly designed, there is no regional pricing and there is no sales of any kind. Let's also remind ourselves that Epic is trying to make this all about the 12/88 profit margin with dev split, even tho its not true. Epic is trying too hard to seem like they are competing against steam when all they do is bribe devs/publishers to bring games over and cannot truly afford the whole 88/12% revenue split when fortnite finally falls out of popularity

Comment has been collapsed.

Here's my reasoning (copy pasted from another comment I made)

What I don't like about it is, Epic is rushing things way too much. They should have fleshed it out to compete closer to steam's level, like come on they could have at least waited until next year to finish their crossplatform API (friends, matchmaking, achievements, inventories etc currently scheduled for Q3 2019) up so they can compete with steam's matchmaking but nahh they launch a year too early with a half assed store that's hard to browse and has literally nothing to help consumers (the dev community has been complaining about the launcher which has existed since 2015 and it has hardly gotten any change other than a bit of UI redesign)

And let's not talk about exclusivity deals.. I would have absolutely no problem if developers decided "hey we'll sell only on this store", I mean a lot of devs do that with Steam already, but if you're gonna advertise a launch on Steam or other stores for a long time and suddenly decide to be a timed exclusive on Epic.. well no thank you I'll just wait or not play your game at all.

There's also the stuff some others have mentioned like it breaking some EU laws, Epic having a history with weak account protection (some time ago they had a big leak of accounts, lots of people got theirs stolen and some even had payment methods linked and used for fortnite purchases on their own accounts). I believe they've gotten the security up in recent times but still wouldn't say it's enough and I count that towards my first point of the store being rushed and released early, pretty much everything about it is half-assed at the moment. As for the EU laws, I haven't seen much of that other than a few GDPR things like certain checkboxes being checked by default (saving payment details) and I'm seeing a lot of other reputable places doing the same. The post that blew up some time ago about them being a spyware had so many wrong things with it, the only real problem was the fact that they accessed the steam files with info about the account when they shouldn't, everything else was normal stuff that even steam does or things that were happening because of the tools the poster used (while also mentioning like 20 times that he's an amateur at that)

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that's... pretty out there.

You mean by selling skins and stuff the game already does? Of course it'll continue to do that. And as I said in another post, patching out Steam users would be contradicting the goal of getting people to use EGS since nobody goes "Hey, Rocket League sucks now, wanna play with me, buy it here" over "Rocket League is awesome, come play with me, you can buy it there".

But most people here seem to really think breaking Steams side, or forcing people to rebuy on EGS is the goal. And I can't possibly understand what makes anyone go to that conclusion but the fearmongering around Epic going about.

No it absolutely wouldn't, particularly if the game is made F2P, as I suspect it soon will be.
(Making the game F2P would be the only way to make sense of this purchase).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you buy out a company my first thought isn't "to make their game F2P"! Usually it's to secure future products.
But I don't know if they are even working on something, and they make Fortnite bucks aplenty with F2P (As does Valve with TF2 and DOTA2), so maybe it's actually a posibility. Nobody would say no to a fat cashcow I suppose.

Comment has been collapsed.

I've been reading through the comments and thinking just this. Thanks for voicing it, Even if the game goes to Epic, Steam owners can still launch it. All good for me. Most people who are going to buy it already have it. Epic will have to give it away or deep discount it to sell it. And as for patching steam out.. that'd make good business sense... they would lose one of the largest chunks of the game population and the money they spend on DLC & Loot boxes. I, for one, would not buy it again... Great game, play every night but I would just move on to something else.

I get why Epic wants to buy them. Or better said, why they want to buy the RL IP. But I have no fucking idea why a developer as successful as Psyonix felt their best option would be to be acquired. Getting their game on mobile can't be worth losing independence.

I can see a point. As developer if I felt that I was done with profitable online game and preferred to try new things. Selling entire studio, which doesn't have anything else really on their name makes sense. I get pile of cash to retire on or use on fresh start on new projects. And Epic is likely paying over the normal valuation...

That makes sense actually - Devs dont have to worry about the game going under anymore.. As much as a spit in a face of fan base it is, it actually seems a decent move from their side..
I doubt they care anymore if epic succeeds or not.. Or they could just rush in at the end and be the heroes who bring the RL back if things dont go well at epic :D

But on a serious note - A company I interned at once was one of the biggest financial and managemental assist system devs in my country. Some Norwegian company came in with quit a sum of money and offered to buy it. He (the owner) just gave away a company he created and nursed through decades. Allegedly, support will continue for Steam owners even after it crosses over to the Epic store. How that'll affect accounts, crossplay, etc., I have no idea.

This one kind of felt inevitable, and given that RL uses its own inventory management system rather than integrating with Steam's, it's not too big a move. Psyonix already has its own forums for Rocket League and it's large enough already to transcend the need for the review system, so all Epic really needs to do is add achievements and better communication support to their platform. As long as it's mostly a hands-off approach to the game, I can live with it, but if I'm forced to migrate platforms I'll pass.

And no, I am just someone faceplaming whenever Epic is brought up again and outrage follows when nobody even understands what is going on, or throws outrageous doomday scenarios around and basically declare the PC dead over a launcher. All these outrage topics popping up on Steamgifts just bother me. So much anger and I have yet to really understand why. Since most of the issues are hogwash. Doesn't stop the hatemob.

i wouldn't be able to invite my friends , unluck achievement , share my game experience on the forums or even use the workshop Community mods without steam . even if the game is drm free i'd rather get steam working with it just for that so you see it's a matter of choice
