This announcement and change is in response to a recent suggestion.

In the past, we would temporarily remove games from the giveaway list when they were available in a sizeable promotion. For example, another website giving away 10,000 keys, or a game developer distributing free keys for a weekend as part of a marketing campaign. These games would remain disabled until the promotions ended, and then we would add the games back to the giveaway list.

However, as mentioned in the suggestion, attempting to temporarily block these games resulted in a number of issues. This included users posting the games under incorrect names, which lead to a wide range of tickets and suspensions. It also caused some confusion in the community about which games could or could not be given away, resulting in unnecessary conflict between users.

Therefore we're removing the restriction, so that users will now be able to give away these games while the promotions are taking place. Hopefully this will allow the community to run a little smoother, and free up time for us to focus on more important tickets. Keep in mind, these games will still be assigned reduced or no CV when appropriate.

This won't stop complaining on forum "I made tons giveaways and still level 0, wtf"
Now we need new FAQ about free games and View Key button 😖

Yeah, they need to add these announcements to the FAQ.

i don't think we will see new FAQ soon. For example, changes about cv with region locked giveaways made ~1,5 years ago

Region restricted giveaways now require 5 entries or more to increase levels.

and its still impossible for new users to find this important information 😥

Aspiring level boosters?

Comment has been collapsed.

Why boosters :O

If i want to get cv, and i see dlc for brand new game on sale in steam store - i won't make 1-hour long public giveaway, cause my store is region-locked and probably i won't get 5 entries

If we have cv thing on steamgifts - why there's no information in FAQ :О

Quick question: Do games that have been temporarily free stay at 0 cv forever? :)

Yep if there was a mass distribution of keys for a game (GA for free) it stays at 0 CV forever.

Well, time for the massflood of the next Humble Bundle giveaway.

If you got the game, you can't see it anyway (if you got the option checked). And if you haven't just hide the game. There were giveaways for false editions of the games, that's far worse in my opinion.

And then DLC hit.
But yeah, hiding it is then I suppose.

It still seems like a very odd concept to auction off a game people can just sign up somewhere else without going through RNG.

And free games from Indiegala and from anywhere else.

Don't see as much swarm from there as I do from Humble giveaways.
Or maybe that's just since IG usually is running repeats and I already got almost all they run?

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm talking about what I've seen given away on Indiegala for the last year or so.

Of the 16 free game giveaways I have on my SG profile most were given away by indiegala, while I had them in not ended SGTools trains.

Permalink

Still got several IG free giveaways unredeemed I'll probably give away at some point too.
But I don't really see why that would make sense WHILE a giveaway for that game is in progress.

And while IG giveaways are plenty they usually create few giveaways. But when Humble gave away games the whole first page was filled with like giveaways of 1 hour of these, most of them like 9 copies at once, till they got blocked.

I'm talking about giveaways before the free games update, I think SG puts them retroactively into the free games sent.

I guess Humble must be giving away much nicer games than Indiegala. ^^

People might don't know that it's free or they can't access the page, can't create a account, don't have a facebook, twitter, whatever account.

But I'm also not sure...

The meaning is that someone might have bought the games for real money and they would like to give them away via giveaways. I myself had hundreds of games like that.

You can just wait till the giveaway is over? I've done that several times, still got Walking Dead S1 too and a few others left to give.

I can but it is much more comfortable if I don't have to wait.

I partially agree. On the other hand now I can just make a giveaway for the free game (that I likely have anyway) and just write it's origins into the description, so whoever bothers to read descriptions can find it for themselves :D

the thing is that most "free" games are bound to certain actions like creating accounts, which many peopel don't want to do.
Memoria for example has been on my wishlist forever but when it was for "free" I didn't want to go through the actions that had to be done to get a key.

I think this is a good thing. It seems like a simple change to implement, and one that unburdens the volunteer moderators.

Most of the incorrect GAs (e.g. all those "Layers of Fear: Masterpiece Edition" while the HB promotion was on and immediately after) were from new or low level users not understanding that they were creating misleading GAs which is against the rules. Now at least they will be able to create the correct GA, and not accidentally break the rules.

However, this totally ruins my new whitelist and blacklist recruiting strategy. I'd politely comment on those obviously incorrect GAs (often the creator would state so in the description), pointing out the rules and possible consequences, and suggest the deletion of the GA. Those that did - whitelisted. Those that did not - blacklisted.

Also, I'm never going to enter one of those Gleam (or similar) giveaways that require loads of steps or personal data. It's not worth my time, even if I am interested in the freebie. However if someone else wants to go to the trouble for me, get a key and create a GA - that works for me.

This is definitely "Keep it simple" strategy and that's good. However, the FAQ needs to be updated.

It also caused some confusion in the community about which games could or could not be given away, resulting in unnecessary conflict between users.

You do know that this and recent updates can and probably do cause confusion in the community especially for those SG users that aren't (much) active on the SG discussions?

Keep in mind, these games will still be assigned reduced or no CV when appropriate.

I thought free games now always get no CV?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Which other recent changes? But yeah, perhaps it's time for a general "news" tab ontop the general giveaway page (with a 'dismiss') rather than rely on the forums to spread word of new changes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Changes like this.

You can always find the official SG news here:

https://www.steamgifts.com/discussions/announcements

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Okay, didn't miss anything important then, I think.
Still me, and I assume many along with me don't really frequent there so a more in-your-face announcement for updates could still be useful, if only to reduce the imminent ticket-load when people are going to mass-report free giveaways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The thing is one can adjust the FAQ and guidelines and make the official announcements stick at the top of the SG discussions but even then it's only useful when people actually see and read it, Even to this date one can find questions in the discussions and individual giveaways like: that's a free game you're giving away or how do I level up.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, the level up has pretty much always be the same, but I can understand the free giveaways being confusing if somebody doesn't visit the forums; these changes of rules aren't specifically announced anywhere more public.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed, the very problem. You can put up anything to read on the forums but if people aren't active on the forums then they don't know about any changes posted there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think a "News" tab is a great idea. I rearly visit the forums (I usually just drop in to check on my wish-listed games), so an in-my-face news-tab would be awesome. Especially if it would become red (like the "Messages" icon) whenever there were some unread announcements.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Same here... I do visit "deals" often, but not the area where news would be posted.

And yeah, the unread news icon sounds like a good idea aswell.

Permalink

Especially when they don't bother to keep the FAQ and guidelines up to date...

Permalink

That would help if and when the FAQ would be up to date and that people would take the time to read the FAQ and the official announcements on SG. I wonder how many of the one million+ SG accounts are active on the SG discussions.

i was hoping for those games to no longer be hidden in the create giveaway search (that was the confusing part), but i guess letting people give them away is slightly better.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Aren't those exactly the same thing?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope, I guess the games could be shown in the list, but could not be selected with an explanation that no giveaways for the game can be created. That could however also lead to users selecting wrong games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the way i'd suggested it in the past they'd be in the list but if you selected one of them you'd get the message that it can't be given away here (with a quick summary of reasons that can happen) and the review giveaway button (and possibly the other fields) would be disabled until you select a game that can be given away.

i think you'd only have dishonest people picking the wrong games that way, but maybe people who don't understand english very well would do it too. it's a lot less confusing that the game not even showing up, especially in cases when a very similar title does show up (such as multiple editions of the same game that have different steam appids).

Rules are outdated to begin with, so no use quoting it since many things were added in announcements. If you want to criticize the staff then do it about not updating rules/faq about the actual changes.
edit: they actually changed it. Also, free games were available for giveaways for months, what's the problem with it? Also, why wouldn't the staff choose how to run a site, instead of a random user yelling bullshit at them because there's a change?

So.... if game called "A" is given free for 48 hours and everyone who created GA will get 0 cp for this game.... what If I buy this game 2 weeks/moths later and give it away? Still 0 CV?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unfortunately, yes. Once a game has been set to 0 CV it's permanent. Otherwise people would stockpile keys when it's free and then give them away later to farm CV.

Permalink

That determination is usually left up to support to decide, depending on the duration, accessibility (who can access it), and how many copies are given away.

TLDR: It depends.

Okay, thanks, but I have question number two - If I give away game called "B" (which wasn't free!) will be free for 48 hours in next ~10 months (for example in Humble Bundle), my CV for this game will be still as it was when winner check "Received", or it's value will be decreased to 0?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You will keep the value if you created the giveaway before it was free, the only situation where you could lose it is when you create a giveaway and it's free later the same day

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if a game goes free or gets bundled after you created a giveaway, you will retain the full value.
the only thing that can lower it is the price in the steam store (if it goes free to play, it's $0), or if t's removed from it.
