Operation Flashpoint or Operation Pacifism?
These are not really my cup of tea either but from what I can understand Arma is pretty much as realistic as it gets for a game and certainly realistic enough to qualify for the realistic category if there was a distinction between kinda realistic and realistic war games

Rising storm-red orchestra 2 is the closest experience on war so far.

I don't know as games with realistic war/terror scenario are not my cup of tea. I play many games including some sort of violence (Stalker, Fallout, Mass Effect... mostly games, where you can also choose diplomatic options) but it's important for me that these games have comparable utopian scenarios as I don't like the simulation of being a soldier involved into any realistic war events based on current affairs.

I've played BioShock 1 and Infinite and while the series is not among my favorite franchises I definitely liked them, mainly because of their crude ideas and great setting. That said I'm playing Mass Effect 1 right now for the first time, halfway through, and wow, it's a fantastic game! I'm not playing it for the combat, furthermore I've maxed out my speech skills and love it especially for its diplomatic options and exploration. Before ME I've played first Deus Ex, I can only imagine what a revolution it was at release, very great, trying to catch up on some of the classics I've missed during my youth. My very favorite alltime franchise is S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I absolutely dig the atmosphere. Fallout games are also what's enjoyable for me, played only 3, NV, 4 so far, 2 is in the pipeline.
Just some additional personal info for explaining my previous posts because I think it might be difficult to understand... my feeling is at least half of the (FPS) games involving war themes are either World War related or counter terrorist related and I admit that it gives me trouble to play them. To some degree because I think many of them are glorified and propagandistic but also because there is a reason I loathe war and did community service instead of going to armed forces. I've never been interested in military things and I don't want to "play" "realistic" war for any "site" when it only reminds me of injustice and pain. Yes, I like it to play games involving violence, I do also enjoy it to play brainless gory FPS, but these "fictive" settings help me to differentiate gaming from reality. Only my point of view, don't want to spoil anything ;)

"Come here, I've always got something interesting for people like you."
Given your similarities between certain preferences of yours and mine, did you ever have a look at the Metro series?
I like dystopian games too for their lack of political correctness, because there is no real world side that has to be (de)glorified. BioShock wasn't that great gameplay wise, but the narrative and setting are great imho. The whole atmosphere is very... Enjoyable in a way. It has a certain rawness. I actually like that in wargames too, the ones that are not too politically motivated, but let's face it, pretty much all of them are one way or another. But I can understand why you don't like them. I have a thing for military generally. Like, the hardware etc. And even games that depict it, but I absolutely despise the actual use of it.
Fallout was recommended to me by couple of game friends that I found had a common love for STALKER. And they advised I should give Fallout a go. Don't like Fallout as much as STALKER, but it's a great series too.
The reason I mention Metro, is well, frankly, I started using Steam because of it. Picked up a retail copy of Metro 2033 in a discount bin, had read about it before etc so decided it was time to give it a try (I was still very picky about what games I purchased back then, before I found the whole Steam games cheap as dirt thing lol). And well, I had to register a Steam account for that game.
And some years later, Metro Last Light was my only pre-purchase game I ever bought. Always been against the concept of pre-purchasing, but for that game I made an exception.
The irony is that only since last year my computer is able to run it playably. :D
Metro is maybe a bit more real world related (bad commies and nazis kinda) but also a work of fiction. And the whole Dark Ones story is quite cool too. Similar to how STALKER has somewhat different endings based on your playthrough, so has Metro (at least 2033, haven't finished Last Light yet). But it's not as RPG-ey as let's say Fallout. And yeah, it's quite a bit more linear. But still has a great atmosphere.
Edit: I just checked your profile and you already played both by the looks of it. :D but most time spent on 2033.

Thanks a lot for your reply Crizyz! My feeling is you perfectly got what I mean, also the thing with (de)glorification which absolutely describes a part of my dilemma.
BioShock (and imo Infinite as well) is a great game. Somehow I've never really felt in love with it, don't ask me why. I liked playing it, especially for its diversified setting and also its narrative. My theory is and I've recognized that also while playing Infinite, often enough I feel a bit clumsy when it comes to BioShocks combat. You have a variety of cool tools (plasmids/vigors), you can chain combos, but nevertheless I've played both titles rather careful (also because of the penalty when you die), recognizing after the fight what awesome things I could have done, when I would have fought a bit more aggressive and used the environments more often (skyrails were amazing though). And then the need to choose your guns when you have no clue what to expect. So in the end maybe it's the gameplay itself that prevents me from giving the franchise the full praise it probably deserves. Anyhow I liked the series and would play the games again.
I've discovered S.T.A.L.K.E.R. long time before Fallout, actually it was one of the first shooters I've played (started rather late to play FPS). And this was love from the first sight. Maybe it was not a good game technically wise, but everything else was there and it felt so real. So much love for details while still being what you describe as raw. No handholding, no rails and ugh, it was difficult in the beginning and I kept dying at every corner. But again, I liked the combat, but even more the freedom offered by the game, the open world, the raw nature, the rainy weather, the comrades sitting around the campfire playing guitar and singing in a foreign language. I think it's the slow pacing of the game along with this kind of somber east block melancholy that fascinated me the most. Still I can't decide if I like the first or third game best, think both of them are masterpieces, my tip goes to the entry of the story. Despite being noticeable weaker I also can say I've liked the second game a lot. That said I also like Fallout a lot (especially 3 which is my fav, I'm odd I know). But my heart goes with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
The only other times I've experienced something similar in terms of mood was when I played first Metro and another game, called Pathologic (not a shooter, more a rpg, super raw and not well received when released but one of the most interesting gems I've ever played). And there are the games Investigator (meh walking sim, good atmosphere), 35mm (another walking sim, not played yet) and the Wasteland games (also not played, guess they are good). Talking about Metro, I've played and liked it a lot, for similar reasons I liked S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The setting and the mix of underground and surface was outstanding and watching the people in the stations a pleasure. Lot's of clever ideas like the ammo being currency. I've missed the open world a lot however, in the end I was fine with the railway system but often I felt limited in exploring this fascinating world. I've also read the book, which was good btw, nothing special in terms of writing but worthwile a read, especially because the story is familiar but not exactly the same. Anytime I have to give Metro Last Light another try, when I've played it I issued some massive performance problems (playing on a laptop) so in the end I gave up and did not finish it.
Btw I absolutely understand what you write about being picky with retail games and things like pre-steam era. Played all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and most Fallout titles apart from Steam, my first Steam entry was Half Life 2. I'm smiling about your "Steam games cheap as dirt" phrase (even more it hurts to read about people complaining about bundle prices), kinda overwhelming when I returned to Steam (before there was not too much in the retail stores, then there was overkill).
I could write more, stopping here for now. Anyway I like the discussion.

Both of you should try Marauder if you have not: https://store.steampowered.com/app/289600/Marauder/
gets VERY cheap in sales, kinda buggy, and does not have the freedom of SoC etc, but has the same feel as Shadow of Chernobyl etc in some ways.

Many thanks for the recommendation! I can see why you bring this up for discussion, lot's of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vibes. Did not know it, sure it looks raw but definitely interesting and it has a pause feature (something I love since FTL). Put it on my list for Summer Sales.

Yes, you definitely should. I'm huge cyberpunk fan but I have neither played Deus Ex nor System Shock in my youth (Played Point'n'Clicks instead). Now and again I'm playing some of these old titles I've "missed" and it's fun to know the origin of game culture. I've never been a "graphic whore" (also because I never had good gaming rigs), so this helps a lot. Some month ago I've played very first Deus Ex for the first time and it was a fantastic lesson in history. You should like rpgs so, it's not really a shooter and combat plays more like Thief (another masterpiece). And please don't make me depressive talking about "To play" lists.

Remember back when the $15 tier would be more than a single four year old game?

Ah yes, "quit your crying". The internet troll equivalent of script kiddie. You know, I remember when impotent little weasels trying to derail a thread would do more than just copy-paste three tired words.

when the arma 3 is on sale in steam it gets cheaper, with apex edition!
This bundle is a joke
Comment has been collapsed.
Really? I could only find it as low as 23$ for apex edition

Fair enough. Also, with the next Monthly getting revealed this Friday, I wasn't expecting anything good anyway. Still don't like war games though. But then again, I haven't found anything I liked in their bundles in a very long time. Guess I am just too picky for my own good.

I have really been wanting to get into Arma 3... and with APEX included, it may be a good time to jump in. Problem is that I own the whole 1st and 2nd tier.
I'll wait for the Monthly reveal before I make a decision.

Just too bad you're still missing out on Jets, Tac-Ops and Tanks DLC.
As for anything pre-Arma 3, well, it's kinda outdated at this point.
But 20 bucks for the Apex edition is not too bad at all. I'm actually considering buying it for my 2nd account.

Thank you again for thread and chart, Sensualshakti! :D
They are 4 tiers of repeats here.

Yeah I don't fully blame humble for this, it's bohemia who fervently believe that their 5 year old game is worth holding it's own in a $15 tier. It's in my wishlist but it never goes on sale or gets bundled cheap, so there it stays, being as my itch for hardcore shooters is scratched by other games. But humble should have maybe kept this for when they had another good bundle on the go, rather than running as their sole games bundle.

Well I like insurgency and day of infamy is also good. Not open world I know, but the gun play feels a lot more realistic than any of the battlefield/ COD crowd.

Try rising storm/red orchestra 2, its even better than insurgency-day of infamy.

You need to understand that ArmA3 Alpha release back than was hot garbage, and it´s received a metric ton of (needed) updates during the years. If you ask a long time arma fanboi like i am, the game was fully enjoyable by the time Apex got released, not for the jungle island it introduced, but for the changes under the hood that went into it by then.
Also, that hardcore shooter you want is right there in the form of Cold War Assault for cheapsies. A true masterpiece!

I remember reading about what a mess it was, and they're to be commended for fixing a lot of it. But generally speaking games that have been available to purchase for 5 years get deeper discounts. I guess they know in terms of what they are offering, there's not much competition, so those who want a hardcore experience will pony up the money.

Feels like https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/49Chj/humble-bundle-the-humble-arma-bundle and again no custom charity...

Negativity towards the purchase question is implicit for the "not buying" options. That's the idea. If the bundle is so great that you're buying another copy despite already owning all the games in it, there's enough "I'm buying" choices.
Perhaps you mean to express that you prefer polls in the vein of "this is a good bundle" vs "this is a bad bundle"? So you can praise it without voting that you're buying.
Comment has been collapsed.
That sounds more like it, but as this thread shows you guys are much more on top of the good or bad bundle question. tbh i have´nt cross-checked previous pricing. Still for someone not owning the bunch of it, 20 bucks for everything ain´t too bad :)

Previous ARMA bundle has lower BTA, lol
