Sure, it's free, but is it any good?

Slightly suspicious that the forum page clicky is a circular link back to the FS Steam Store page, and Metacritic denies the game's existence altogether...

I enjoy footy games like FIFA and New Star Soccer, but haven't heard of this one... Since I'm already approaching my download cap for the month, I don't want to waste precious gigabytes if this is more Dog & Duck FC than FC Barcelona.

Can't say I've had any experience with it but it looks rather poor... Check out the website.

Football MMO? O_o
No way in hell would something like that work.

EDIT: Yep, just check out it's Wikipedia page. It's not a surprise at all but the game has a pay-to-win element.

In a best case scenario, I was hoping this might be something like a multiplayer version of the FIFA "Become a Pro" mode (or whatever it's called these days).

Sounds like it might be a load of balls though :(

That's one of the problems I forgot to mention in my previous post.

The pay-to-win element (called "Bonding" or "Bonders" in game) is pretty annoying as people who have the money can essentially buy stats and items that make them impossible to play against, particularly if they're also highly skilled at the game.

Luckily not that many people have the money and/or are not that skilled so it's usually not too much of a problem to deal with, however it is something to be wary of.

European football IS real football. It's that silly sport you have in the US that's shitty. The least you could have done was invent a name for it, not try to steal one. It's not even an appropriate name, considering the sport consists mostly of men trying to kill each other's brain cells.

Yeah - when I hear the word "football", the furthest thing from my mind is a sport played primarily using one's feet.

Those crazy Europeans/ROW. What WILL they think of next?

Here is a gameplay video. The gameplay looks really cheesy to me, more like some kind of Mario Party minigame than actual football. Even more so if the video creator is right and the 11vs11 mode is only open for subscribers.

My impression is this might be a fun game to play for people who like MMOs but it's more a football-themed game than a footbal game.

It is "actual football", but most of the games you're likely to play are 5v5 (technically it's 4v4, 1 being the AI controlled goal keeper).

Also you're wrong about 11v11 being only available to subscribers. The first starting Amateur matches (levels 1-10) and Division 4 (levels 11-24) are 5v5 only. By Division 3 (levels 25-49) you get access to 5v5 and 7v7. Division 2 and 1 you'll only have access to 7v7 and 11v11.

You might think you'll want to jump straight to a 11v11 match, but trust me, it is a very very bad idea. The vast majority of people playing don't stick to their positions, this is particularly true for newer, low level players. Even the 7v7 matches in Div 3 turn into utter chaos with no one defending, people constantly getting caught offside and everyone chasing the ball rather than getting into open space. It gets better in Div 2 as people have more experience, common sense and generally know how to play the game.

I actually like the 5v5 matches the best, it's offers a decent team size but also allows you to make an impact on the game. In some of the larger games, 7v7 for example, you may not get to do much at all and feel a bit left out. Also there's no offside rule in 5v5 :)

Another thing, you do earn FS Bonds in game (game currency that you have to physically pay for) albeit slowly, which means you don't have to spend real world money. So it is possible, after some time of playing, to buy some of the premium items offered in game.

The game has always been free, I've played it quite a lot on and off for a few years and I'd say overall, it is actually quite good, however there are some caveats.

Since the game is relatively unknown, there isn't a particularly large player base and so what you'll tend to find is at low level/starting games, you're often playing against "pro" players that have just made a new character. Obviously this ruins the fun completely and you'll inevitably lose badly.

As you move up in levels often at times you'll play against an opposing side that's completely composed of pro players, in game this is called a "stack" or "stacking", again, it ruins the fun since the match making system is meant to be completely random.

Gameplay wise, there aren't many tricks and moves (like in FIFA etc), the vast majority of the play is just simple running, passing and shooting. Although it is possible to dribble, you won't look like Messi or whoever on screen, unlike FIFA. There are tricks you can buy like the Cruyff turn and overhead kick, but generally they're not needed or are a waste of (game) money.

As others have pointed out, the graphics and player animations are dated and clunky (the game is fairly old after all), so if you compare it the likes of recent FIFA games, it's obviously not up to standard.

That being said, when you get good players on your side who know how to play (stick to their assigned positions and pass the ball) then the matches can be very good fun.

One thing to note, because the game is a MMO, there are stats and levels and so your starting character at level 1 will play terribly. It's quite off putting being only able to sprint 5m before running out of stamina or only being able to pass 10m at best. The game gets a lot better by level 25+ (Division 3), which you'll reach after playing about 30 or so matches, so try to reserve judgement until then.

If you want to try a sort of small scale version of it, there is Striker Superstars, basically a web browser version of the game.

Striker Superstars is newer than Football Superstars and they've changed some of the interface and match making system, but it's quite bad in comparison to the proper game (at least when I tried it), however it does give some indication as to what Football Superstars is like.

Here's a quick compilation of goals I just uploaded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIDomi5x5QE

I'm not by any means a pro player, so this isn't me showing off or whatever, it's just meant to provide you with a bit gameplay. I apologise for the shitty quality.
