Windows phone or Android. iPhones are literally the biggest pieces of junk I've ever seen on the mobile market. Craved only be wannabe "edgy" teenagers that want to appease their pathetic cliques.

If you're fine with your "dumb" phone, as you say, why not just stay with that one? Even if you can get a smartphone handed down for free, free doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't come without a price - as you can see with most free-to-play games. When it comes to smartphones, that price is your privacy. No matter if it's Android, iOS or Windows Phone, the companies associated with said operating systems will always collect data about your every move, they track your location, they record and store everything: every network information, every email and phone call, it will all be tied to your account and there's almost no way to opt out. So, if you're anything like me and primarily use a phone for phone calls, don't want to play games with it and aren't into freaking social media anyway, why not just stick with your reliable "dumb" phone a bit longer? ;-)

I haven't used iOS, although I know a lot of people who do, and they're generally happy with it. I've used a Windows phone (didn't like it), and I currently use a Samsung Galaxy Young 2 I bought recently.

A main criterion for me is that the phone will be small. Like you, I don't need the phone for content consumption (I was just asked to have Whatsapp access and I do find having the ability to occasional search the web for something helpful), so a large screen is wasted on me, and I'd rather that the phone be easy to carry and will bother me the least when it's in my pocket.

What I like about Android is the flexibility of its "desktop". In particular I like to put a gmail widget on one of the screens, which allows me to see new e-mails easily.

I started with iPhones but when it was time to upgrade to the 5, I decided to try a Samsung, I would never go back. :P

I've used both, and my decision is to use Android for smartphone, and iOS for tablet/pad.

I don't game on my smartphone - it's for listening to music when I'm on a move, and browsing etc. And it offers the greatest flexibility for uploading/downloading music. iOS isn't even close. Sure it's smooth experience (iPhone), but it doesn't cut it. For smartphone I prefer rooted Android.

iPad Air (my preferred tablet) is for CoC and some other casual games.

Personally I always get android, but that is because it is cheaper. If you can get it for free, you should just ask your friends/family what the benefits are for those specific phones and decide on that.

iPhone might be better for your needs. Camera is very good and it has decent battery life. You can get those in Android phones of course too, but it needs some research. Samsung Galaxy have good cameras but sh*t battery.

That said, Android is my own choice. I hate the UI of iOS, from start screen to weird positioning of buttons and annoying flatness of some controls.

As far as I remember, there's also some hassle in setting up the iPhone for the first time, creating Apple ID? And having to install iTunes if your computer is a PC and not a mac. Maybe that's outdated info though.

And this android phone is? There's literally thousands.
