A follower of the Apple cult regardless of the usefulness or real worth of the product. Believes with without question the cult propaganda which installs the almost mythological belief that what they have just bought is the fastest or most user friendly product ever, only to be re-sold the same product, with a few minor tweaks, a few months later with the same rhetoric and complete disregard for reality. Easily mislead by their own egos and think they are being unique and innovative. Often wrong but convinced they are correct. See definition for extremist, brainwashed fukwits.

android. actually everything but crApple. lol. sorry x)
I had to work with apple products (mac shit) and it was horrible. they call it innovative, I call it bullshit...
And from what I hear all day long (in my firm we sell phones) I can say that people have more problems with apple.
sorry but I have to add these pics xD

You say now that you won't use it for gaming but as a gamer when you have a device with a lot of potential for gaming won't you eventually want to try mobile gaming as well? There are very enjoyable games to be had on mobile devices.

Apple was on the verge of extinction, their H/W manufacturers abandoned, before they introduced iPhone thus increased their sale on macOS too. macOS once advertised "we are virus free OS" since no one was bothered to write a virus that will affect minor set of computer users. They are "Sony" of US, lots of proprietary formats, trademarks etc. Apple is in deep a "design" company and a brilliant one I admit. I like all their designs mostly superior to their competitors. But this comes at a price, you have to stick with them and do what they told you do to without options (other than version, 4, 5, 6) paying twice for same functionality.
On the other hand Android is widely spread because of its structure. You can get from many companies and from many different models, even sub models. But Android sometimes suffer from this fragmentation, mainly OS. It has more sources of apps than iPhone in my experience. This lots of choices may confuse one but sticking to major brands and play store apps is a way to go.
As past examples; Symbian died because it was another proprietary of Nokia. Blackberry same fate. Windows Phone, again proprietary, just tries to imitate iPhone success but fails to catch Apple design. And as an off topic resemblance, we got M$ Windows because it was an alternative (copy) to macOS which has been the major OS today.
So in your case since it's free; if you prefer design aspects and prestige more disregarding variety go with iPhone. It's much cuter, designed to give perfect user experience. But future-wise it will follow other proprietary formats. Or if you prefer variety, openness and larger degree of freedom go with Android. Due its design it will last longest.

That's the thing, actually. I'm paying the same for my "dumb phone" that I'm being offered for a "smart phone" plan. It's time to move up, I think.

I had an Android phone before and the pro about it is that you can customize it a lot. There are more apps, because just like Greenlight they don't care what's going into the Google Play store.
So you can download emulators, buy a cheap bluetooth controller and make the phone into a handheld device. So customization and apps are pretty much endless.
On the other hand you have the iPhone, which I have right now, that makes less trouble because there are little to no viruses that can affect it, at least from what I know and I never had one.
If you wanna jailbreak it you basically have the same options as with an Android.
If you're not jailbreaking it you still have a lot of positive aspects, like apps that are not available for Android. Games that are made just for the iPhone, even really good ones like X-Com, Deus Ex: The Fall, a special Dead Space and Mass Effect game made only for iPhone, which are both awesome!
You have apps like iMaschine among others if you're into music et cetera.
And it makes almost no trouble, software wise.
So long story short: Android is customizable like a normal Windows PC, but is also having the same flaws a Windows PC could have, like malfunctioning software or viruses.
The iPhone has a shitload of exclusive apps, never makes any trouble and when you know your way around it you can still make the most out of it, without jailbreaking, which makes it as good or maybe even better than an Android phone.
I hope what I wrote makes sense as I just written my first thoughts about it.

Actually, that was quite helpful. While I prefer the PC for its flexibility and ability to customize, do I really need that in my phone? And no, I don't plan to use my phone for gaming. I have a computer for that.

Then the iPhone sounds perfect for you! The thing is that I had no PC for almost a year before I got this one so I tried to get the most out of my phone.
I streamed movies on it, I played videogames (back then you could install an emulator via the internet without jailbreak) and what not to compensate for having no PC. :)

You can customize as little or as much as you want. Choice is always good.
The customization level of an iPhone is the equivalent of removing the start menu in Windows 7 and adding the icon of everything you install right on the desktop. You are free to move those icons around though, that's all you have for customization.
On Android you have your home page (the equivalent of your Windows desktop) where you can put what's important for quick access, plus widgets for quick reference, then you have the app drawer with all your apps. Of course you can go crazy and download a whole new interface (I've seen people do beautiful things with their phones) but that's entirely up to you.
Except for some bought-off exclusives, gaming is similar on both platform. (Often cheaper on Android since more apps do exist as free/ad-supported) If you're not planning on doing much mobile gaming, then the few exclusives won't affect you anyway. And as far as viruses and malware go, if you apply the same rule as on PC (stay off the shady warez sites) you have little to no risk. In all the years I've been rocking an Android phones (moved from Windows Mobile to Android in 2011) I have never came across any kind of malware.
Even Apple Fanboys LOVE Android anyway.

It is your choice. If you dont know what to choose is pointless to ask others because you dont know what you want or need and if you do so use google to find what suits you better. If you want just phone and do nothing on it buy iPhone. If you want to modify it or diversity buy one of the dozens of Androids. i am Android user. Never more iOS in my hands.

If I could chose what I wanted, it would be a new type of phone. Both have their benefits and drawbacks, but I'm not clear on what those benefits and drawbacks are, hence this posting.

Main thing comes down to open-endedness. Android is way, way more customizable with a whole lot more options. If you plan on using absolutely nothing of that, a new Iphone is quite stable and will do you fine, but I'd say the best current phone on the market is the LG G4.
Overall, its more or less the same as Mac vs PC

Ok, I am pretty much in a draw:
IPhone:
Android:
TL;DR: For the the-phone-i-take-this-time: Iphone. For free, it is just better. But thinking about future, I would go for Android as your next bunch of devices will be cheaper and optimized for your needs (there are specialized androids while there is only the universal Iphone).

Android because of the following :
1) Plenty of apps and games on the playstore (I know you don't plan on playing on it...)
2) Rootable, Full customization, More secure.
3) Many brands and models to choose from (Samsung is my personal choice)
4) Specs are usually always ahead of Apple's Iphone : 4K/ Cam megapixels etc...
5) Most important point : Price. You said "Free" in your post, but I don't support a brand which always make its phone so expensive.

Since you're looking to migrate from a "dumb-phone", a fast and efficient calling and messaging interface are your primary concerns. I find that Windows phones excel in that regard. If that's not an option, I'd go with Android. You generally get more freedom in how you customize your phone and more free app options, in case you want to expand its use to anything more than just calling or texting.
It's not that iPhones are crap, but they're ridiculously overpriced and they usually lag a couple of years behind Android phones in terms of features.
That said, if all options work for you and we're talking about free hand-me-downs, you could play around with each OS for a couple of days, see which suits your needs best.

I have an android phone, but I don't like neither of them. In the first week, I was very excited about it and installed every app I could, but after that I got bored and realised that it's a waste of money for me. NowI use it almost exclusively for voice, messages (both google hangouts and sms), alarm clock and maps. The only application I run is Steam. If I could turn back time, I'd just buy a cheap android phone and a better gpu with that money.
PS: Used both, but only owned Android myself; voted for android because there is no "neutral" option.

Longtome Android user here. Upfront,Android sounds much better for you. it would be much easier to put a new layout on the phone to make it easier for you to figure out what the heck you are doing if the one there now is confusing, and usually is cheaper than an iphone (and seems to respond better, this is opinion though. Take this with a grain of salt.) If you can, get a Nexus phone. These are straight from google with usually the least bloatware from the manufacturer with the cleanest OS you can get. If not, try Samsung, been using that for over a year now and its pretty good.

I don't care if you buy an Android Phone, a Windows Phone, a Blackberry or whatever.
BUT NEVER BUY AN APPLE PRODUCT!
Now serious:
I prefer Android. First point many Android devices are cheaper and a lot better than Apple products.
Also are many Apps in the App Store more expensive than in Play Store.
And another two big points: Android allows Apps from other sources than Play Store, iOS doesn't, and Android is completly customizable.
You can change your lock screen, use many Widgets (things showing you specific information or images on home screen) or change the hole appearance of the System, sooo......
Android!

I think iPhone users here only for giving away.)))
But still, I sow many peoples, who eat only fast prepearing noodle but have iPhone - it is only for image.)

While I have no problem continuing to use my "dumb phone," I am in the position of having friends and family offering me hand-me-down phones as they outgrow their :"smart phones." This brings up something of a dilemma, however. Which path should I go down? So, since there are probably some of you who have experience with both styles of phone, iPhone and Android, I thought I would ask you all. If you could get either an Android phone or an iPhone for free, which one would you pick and why? I'm looking for the benefits and drawbacks of each.
Edit: I play games on my computer, so I have no reason to play them on my phone. I might use the camera (rarely), and I will probably use the email and texting. I don't use Twitter or Facebook or any of that social media stuff. As for other "apps," I have no idea what's out there.
