@rachellove: small correction in that the 5 leaked BTA X-COM games have in fact been bundled in July 2014's Humble 2K Bundle.

Keep in mind Civ IV expansions are separate in steam library. They don't appear as DLC for the base game as other games tend to do. Just mentioning it in case you're about to buy it twice.

All tiers are one key, so you either trade the entire pack or nothing.

Well, the entire tier.

But in the unlikely event that you had no use for anything from Tier 2, I'll take it for the Xcom stuff.

If you do buy this, make sure to move the 2K & Humble sliders all the way to the left (and the charity slider all the way to the right) under "Choose where your money goes" for tier-locking the games. The structure of this bundle is an intentional slap in the face to the SteamGifts community and what it represents, which 2K is clearly seeking to undermine.

This isn't Humble's fault. The publishers are the ones who make these kinds of demands. Otherwise, there would be no bundle at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is in part, though, because HB agreed to do it and by default gets a cut of the purchases, so they are most certainly complicit in anti-consumer practices. Obviously the tier-bundling was 2K's idea, and I don't think I said otherwise, but let's not act like the distributor is innocent when they give in to publisher demands of this sort.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well, the alternative is for humble-bundle to only have low-quality bundles, like indiegala.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd say 'SteamGifts' isn't what they have a problem with, but key resellers/traders who buy bundles like this in bulk, then sell them over the following years (whereas a bundle is a limited-time offer), losing the publisher sales from people who are - in fact - willing to spend money...

This approach counters that quite efficiently, people will be less inclined to buy 'tier-keys', and you're at the very least gonna have to explain this when reselling a key like this, increasing the chance of people figuring out that maybe they should've just gotten the bundle themselves, and especially when they only want a single game from a tier, they might just move to buying it directly instead of a 'tier-key'

Not saying it's not a bad move, but it's not coming from a place of malice. SG is not the target, at worst it's collateral damage.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well put, I agree with everything you said. The publishers want to have their bundle sales model and eat it too, and both honest, generous Steamgift users as well as those who try to exploit the bundle system through arbitrage are negatively impacted. Yes, the companies are protecting their interests, but they are doing so at the interests of both resellers and consumers who wind up in effect paying for licenses they can't use. Malice, no, but it's changing the status quo in a way that hurts Steamgifts, and I think it's important not to support it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Considering the price of bundles, it's "under-costed" licenses we can't use.
You also bring up an interesting point, in that the consumer buying the bundle is buying a single-use license, not a multi-transferable license.

Good bundle if you don't own XCOM and the Civ games. I own all Civ game and XCOM (not Enemy Within though), so a big nope for me. But it is a good bundle, just too bad it's all one key, otherwise I might have gotten tier 1 just to give away...

there's still Pirates! in T1 though, that's worth it at 1$ for sure... and maybe AP if you haven't tried it.

I'm not too interested in those though. I have plenty of great games I still have to play, so I've no interest in getting games I'm barely interested in and probably end up never playing.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you owe it to yourself to play pirates.
Pirates (1984) was Sid Meier's first sandbox game, and is still loads of fun. Even though it's been remade twice (Pirates Gold in 1994 and the version in this game) the gameplay is virtually the same. I don't think it's possible for someone to not like these games

if you want to do people a favor and also want to get BTA then you can buy the $1 tier and lock in your BTA price. Wait a bit and get the BTA later. It helps by lowering the BTA price. You might even end up being able to get a second copy that includes BTA for less than the price to upgrade to BTA.

Comment has been collapsed.

Great bundle, except for the single-key-per-tier thing.

I own all but one of Tier 1, but none of Tier 2 or 3. Assuming the bonus Tier 2 stuff is correct, I own some of those, too. So this bundle is actually okay value, but I really don't want to support the way Humble bundles are moving to one key for multiple games. It sucks.

So at the moment, no buy for me. Great games, bad bundle. :(

Send your complain to Firaxis, HB has nothing to do with the tiering. + Firaxis also just protects themselves before G2A and Kinguin will be flooded again with the bundle's content, dropping the sales numbers for months.

How does that work? Which DLC are you referring to? You can always give away or swap the other two tier keys.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, generally I try keys on my account, in case it has some different version of the game than the one I already own - like Arma 2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/33900/ vs. Arma 2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/33910/ - and if I do already own something, I should still have an unused key for whatever. Except this time Steam happily ate all three keys, and the only thing I didn't already own was the "Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth Exoplanets Map Pack." :( Oh well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wow, that's nasty. If you own all of the games then the key shouldn't work.

Tough choice for me due to the 1 key per tier nonsense...
Missing pirates from t1, xcom dlc and starships in t2, and at the current BTA price id rather just top it up and go for Civ BE...

...and am just missing the dlc in the supposed BTA bonus, blahhhh :(

Permalink

I am in the same boat. I have Civ 3 and 5 and the XCom base pack so it feels like a massive waste to get T2 just for the DLC and Civ 4. Lots wasted on T1 too.

Damn, the price of BTA just keeps going up. At this point you may as well get tier 3. I have been waiting for it to go down before I bite. About $6 is the price point that I would bite at. Anything higher and I may as well wait a bit to see if it goes down because at that point I will be only tier 1 or tier 3.

In future may I suggest using multiple tabs in your browser? The bta price only changes when you refresh, so don't refresh the page with the lowest price you've found. I could still buy a $6 BTA tier now if I wanted to even though it was from over 12 hours ago. I don't think it always works, but from the times I've tried it it's been successful.

Not really my cup of tea. Pirates! is a fun game that I've played both on NES and PC but I have no desire to revisit it whatsoever. Tier nada for me then.

And speaking of Sid Meier's games, I'd love to see a remastered version of Alpha Centauri getting released. I'm not much into turn-based strategy games but that one was just awesome.

For me it's only Beyond Earth that's interesting but I'm not sure it would worth it to pay 15 bucks for that only. If they had at least threw in Gods and Kings or Brave New World it would be a sure buy.
