This started a few days ago and I don't know what is causing it but I keep getting randomly logged out while browsing the site or posting a reply. When logging in it shows my Steam is still logged in so I don't think my cookies are randomly deleted. Nothing has changed on my computer / browser either.

I was wondering if anyone is experiencing similar issues?

Edit: Please everyone say what browser you're using to know if it is related to a specific one. Also for those having the issues, the extensions being used might be helpful to know if you can list them!

As for me, I'm using Chrome (Version 80.0.3987.149) and I have uBlock Origin / Ghostery but I've tried with extensions disabled and still had the issues.

Interestingly enough, since I posted the thread I have not been logged out.

Edit 2: Possible problem and solution - thanks Moirraine

Out of curiosity, what browser are you normally using when you're on the site?

Chrome 73 with uBlock

I got logged out as sending a reply.. but it went a little like: Good to note that you're using Chrome 73, I'm on Chrome 80 (full version in original post now). It could be an issue with the latest version if it is a Chrome issue.

I have same problem, it feels like cookies i got form steamgifts have a very little lifetime (maximum logged in time for me is about an hour), but I checked it and saw a lifetime of the session cookie is 1 week. Maybe a problem in some bad updated JS. Also I use ESGST, my be it got bugged update. Hope it will be fixed coz it a pain to relogin every hour :((

I don't use ESGST so it wouldn't be that for me (and possibly not for you). Mine doesn't seem to be time based.. it's very random (and annoying).

I have the same. Checked the forum some hours ago and thought it would only be me. Using only my script and this dark mode script. Also have an exception for uBlock. But I also use Ghostery to block trackers.

I always used Ghostery+AdBlock+NoScript and never had such issues before.

Only had it yesterday and today. But not in the last hour. Sometimes even when opening gifts in a new tab or when reloading the root page after 5 minutes.

I don't use the script or any dark mode script so it wouldn't be that for me either.

I do use uBlock and Ghostery but I tried with them disabled as well and it still happened.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it has to do with the SameSite Cookie changes. I've heard about it at work last year, but had totally forgotten about it. In that case cg has to change something.

I don't think it would take too long to change the setting. Hopefully cg sees the thread and can make the change! I really miss never having to login again especially when I use the site multiple times a day.

Firefox

I login each (few) day(s) at sg -depends on how long my PC runs-.
Each time i close the browser are all cookies, temp and all that stuff deleted.
I don't lke the "remember me/let me be logged in forever/write automatic all needed login infos".
Harder for others to get access to used sites (accounts, shops, mailbox and so on)

Yeah, I understand that. I still use it on some sites but others I agree I prefer it doesn't save the information etc. Thanks for the info - just seeing if it is mostly chrome users. :)

Same, many times daily logouted from ST, SG, HB, some sites still showing agin and agin "accept cookies" like something is broken.
Google Chrome.. tried turn off all extensions etc, same problem, i deleted cookies, cache... same, still same.

I haven't really tried on HB or ST but definitely on SG. I don't have the sites asking me to accept cookies again and again though. I tried turning off extensions too but not luck. The extensions I have are uBlock and Ghostery.
It is a bit interesting that two other users are also using Ghostery (and an Ad Block but I'd imagine that's more standard).
Do you happen to be using Ghostery as well?

Yes i have Ghostery but no effect if i turn it off. I turned everything off and still logouts for me.
After hours now i went on HB and am agin logouted, SG and ST like 20x daily logouts. Sometimes its good for hour sometimes i must relog literally every few minutes.

I just checked my HB and I was logged off.. a few days ago I wasn't. I don't know if it is constant though, I'll login and let you know.

Found some way how to fix it? I had to relog today like 20x...
I meant its problem of older Chrome so i updated to newest and problem still persist.
Not depending what i do in browser, still getting random logouts. I tired everything excluding factory reset of browser (thats unacceptable coz some of my extensions will be reseted and they do not offer backup function and make all agin will take over 9000 hours)
Very interesting is that only some websites doing logouts... for me its ST, SG, HB, Nike.com

No, nothing I tried has fixed it - I think it is a change the sites will have to do. For now it should only be chrome browser but eventually apparently Firefox and other browsers will also implement similar changes (assuming it is based on the SameSite cache thing).

Yeah, it only started recently for me, I used to be on for months if not years without needing to login again. Also my Steam is still logged in so no issues there as far as I can tell.

I'm using firefox and I don't have the problem, but take a look at the SameSite Cookie Changes, could be the reason for your logouts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That very much seems like the case - from reading it does that mean each site would need to change the SameSite cookie value or is there something I can do, if you know?

Also thanks for that, it seems promising as the cause!

Edit: It looks like there are some chrome flags that can be changed. I will try that for now.

  • chrome://flags/#same-site-by-default-cookies
  • chrome://flags/#cookies-without-same-site-must-be-secure

For Chrome there is addon "EditThisCookie", it allows to lock cookies from deleting and edit cookie expiration date. I tried it and it doesn't help, server resets session ID and cookie become invalidate =\ So it seems like server script bug.

I imagine if that addon isn't new then it probably can't handle the SameSite thing yet? Not sure.

Permalink

Addon last update date 30 Nov. 2018, it can handle "SameSite" field.
By default cookie from steamgifts have this field empty at me (at least as I can see in addon UI).
I tried to set session's cookie option to "Lax", going to check what will happens xD

I think if the site has no value it automatically takes it as Lax. From what I can understand it needs to be something like SameSite=None;Secure but I haven't looked into it too much.

Tried all 3 options in "SameSite" ("none', "lex" and "strict"), doesn't help, still have issues.
Also saw this: https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/gM8Ex/steamgifts-compromised
So it seems really server troubles...

I suppose I'll just be patient and hope it gets fixed.. or start using another browser for SG, thanks for doing some testing!

Seems to me like the option you want is "SameSite=None; Secure", and if you only declare part of it you'll automatically get the default "SameSite=Lax"

I use latest Chrome with a lot of scripts and extensions and never had same problem with SG.
But yesterday I had some problems with Steam itself in browser. I was browsing store and sometimes browser was loading logged out pages. Clicking on another link or just a refresh always helped

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's something I experience as well, being logged in, clicking my way through Steam, and suddenly seeing a page as if I wasn't logged in. Refreshing or clicking on some button to load the next page makes me being logged in again.

This even happens to me when I browse Steam store/community via the Steam program directly and even sometimes in the Steam app on mobile.

But here on SG I never had to login a second time (except for when I deleted my browser data or something of course, but never unexpected).

That's just how Steam has always worked and there has never been anything to fix it.

No issues with Chrome, Opera, or Firefox on PC (basic adblock, as well as active browser protection via antivirus and antispyware, with no scripts of note). No issues with Silk, Chrome, or Dolphin on android. It seems likely that it's going to be down to some security setting on your end, via your anti-spyware, anti-virus, browser, or similar.

Rather, I don't think I've ever had to relog on to SG (and that despite Steam regularly logging me out), on any platform, since I first joined the site (in 2015). Which, frankly, is damn nice. I wish more sites allowed me that convenience (especially other Steam Community sites, considering how regular Steam logging me out is).

I think it has to do with the latest version of the chrome browser and that they started rolling out the SameSite thing to users in stages (from what I've been reading). It should be a simple site change on cg's side to get the right setting, I think.

Weird - I have the same version of Google Chrome (80.0.3987.149 (Official Build) (64-bit)) and I don't recall having to re-log anytime recently.

I only have ESGST and TamperMonkey's RaChart enhancer enabled for the SG site.

I'm not sure how the roll out in waves is happening if it is the chrome version or some other way to give it to users.. it'd be weird if that's the case though.

I thought this was a SteamGifts issue but Humble Bundle loves logging me out as well. Steam has logged me out a couple of times but if I refresh the page im logged back in. Yahoo is having some issues too. Other than that I typically have 38 tabs and about half of those I am logged into something and nothing else is having issues. I am willing to bet that servers are getting overloaded with people being logged in due to people staying indoors and therefore they are logging out people whos activity is expiring as far as new people logging in.

If you're using the latest version of chrome it might be that new thing rolling out for SameSite cookies which will require several websites to likely update some configuration (at least from my understanding).

Yeah, for now I've been okay with it since it is mostly only Steamgifts that I've been browsing and my Steam is staying logged in so it's easy to get back in. I should probably try Firefox or something just to see if it actually works and I stop getting logged out.. but we'll see. :)
