I find it confusing (and time consuming) that users on this site frequently use a different name than their Steam name. It's especially problematic when trading, where it's critical to double check the match between the two names, but there are many other cases where it's inconvenient. Instead of having to check this manually, it would be better if SG displayed both names side by side, or at least have the Steam name as a tooltip of the SG name.

Dual display is obviously not needed for users who use the same name on both sites (like yours truly).

Should both names be displayed?

My name is Quayle, Dan Quayle

I would love to use the same name as I have on steam, but it's already in use by someone else. :(

Well, you can always do the reverse - change your Steam name to match your (pretty cool, may I add) SG name.

Or be able to change your SG name more often and display the history like steam does.

About the second part, ESGST keeps history of SG nicknames.

well displaying only steam name would lead to confusion - we would have 100s of new konrads6s I guess :)

Doesn't it already lead to confusion on Steam? I think it's likely that people will change their username in these cases, to have something more unique and recognizable, especially if their active in SG forums.

so if it already leads to confusion on Steam, it will lead to confusion on SG even more I guess. And some people want something more uniqe and some want to express their right to name Johnny or nickname Bully :P (─‿‿─)

I don't know, you can change steam name any time, and unless you sync your SG account (I guess) it wouldn't be changed, unless the site constantly checks every user's Steam name and if it's correctly updated or not. Also traders always point out that names can be changed way too easily, so displaying Steam name wouldn't make trades any safer, as far as I know.
(Do you use enhanced steam? it adds SG links to Steam profiles, so SG->Steam and Steam->SG checks both just take one click, and it's still the URL that's the most trustworthy identifier in both SG's and Steam's case)

How about client-side checking (only for users who are actually displayed on the screen)? I should probably suggest this as an enhancement to ESGST :-)

At the same time, a script that will display the SG username on Steam, alongside the Steam username, would be helpful too. This would be a nice enhancement for Enhanced Steam (which I of course use). Currently ES helps checking, but the process is longer than I'd like.

Well I mean, I don't trade at all, so for me this feature would be pretty useless. When I check a winners steam profile I just click the link in their SG profile, so I have no need to know their username.

I can see how it would be a convenience for traders who do a LOT of trading on steamtrades and want to do their due diligence faster, but here on SG I don't see a purpose for it.

But...but... your sg profile leads to your steam profile, so it's easy to check. Also, if you have enhanced steam script, your steam profile leads to your sg profile so... eh... but yeah, tool tip wouldn't hurt.

I agree that it's possible, but I don't think it's as easy as it can be. Hence this thread.

It wouldn't work because multiple people can use the same name on Steam, but not on here. Also, SG can't display emojis and possibly other symbols, so those names won't show up here at all.

That doesn't mean that it wouldn't work. It means it would work like it does on Steam.

Also, SG can't display emojis and possibly other symbols, so those names won't show up here at all.

What technical reason, if any, prevents SG from being enhanced to support this?

I don't know. My name here is different than Steam because SG can't display emojis.

Not in the username field. SG returned an invalid character error.

So it means there's no issue with character encoding. They just need to allow it for usernames (though personally I'm not a great fan of usernames that can't be pronounced or typed/searched).

especially problematic when trading

I would have said to make it display on the ST sidebar but it was a deliberate decision to not show it by cg apparently exactly to make people check more closely.

Steam names aren't unique, so I don't know how they'd help at all considering impersonators. Clicking the link to verify is exactly the desired procedure for security.

Relying on changeable names is always wrong. No to both.

Maybe the enhancement should be elsewhere (e.g. in a script for Steam), but it's still very much needed. How would you help traders who started discussing a trade on a thread on SteamTrades and then now moved on to Steam chat? It would be beneficial for them to know they are the same users, but currently they have to rely on unintuitive manual checks using Enhanced Steam.

One alternative option would be a Start Steam Web Chat button/link near each username on SteamTrades + a script that adds the SteamTrades (SteamGifts) username to the Steam web chat window.

to know they are the same users

Name does not help there cause it's not unique.
Instead relying on Steam names is how people get scammed by impersonators.

yes, the reverse: show sg nick on steam
but that isn't an sg issue

Good point. I would definitely vote to add this as a tooltip for SG users.

That would only be useful for trade. And when you consider to trade with someone, there are many more checks you'll have to do, if you are somewhat careful.
Not to mention that you'd have to check the Steam account anyway, as Steam usernames aren't unique. And with that your suggestion would actually be counterproductive, as it would give people a false sense of name recognition.
So summed up: It wouldn't save any time and it'd give scammers another option to fool people.

This is a valid concern. As I wrote above, one alternative option which would improve things would be a Start Steam Web Chat button/link near each username on SteamTrades + a script that adds the SteamTrades (SteamGifts) username to the Steam web chat window.

Lol, yes, I have the same problem when I want to send gifts. Some users even don´t use a name... they use simbols! :/

I think if steamgift is a steam related site, so, names must be sync. But this have the problem with duplicated names in SG :/

When I first joined SG I didn't know it required linking a Steam account. I don't think I understood exactly what SG was, how it actually worked and I was skeptical of it's legitimacy. If I had understood this Steam-SG relationship at the start (say a hint or suggestion at SG user registration) I likely would have chosen my Steam name as my SG name.

I'm going to have to go with "No, display only SG name." My reason is very simple, it would make it even easier for unwanted people from Steam locating you here. I'm aware that ES already does that, but not everyone knows about that.
