THE GIVEAWAYS ARE OVER

THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING

IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE SO MANY PEOPLE SOLVING THE PUZZLE

I'M GLAD TO HAVE GIVEN SOMETHING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

I WILL MAKE MORE PUZZLES AS SOON AS I CAN AFFORD THEM

Welcome to my rad puzzle!
(and my very first too)

Theme: Higgledy-Piggledy

Rules

First off, before participating in this puzzle, please read the rules of the site.

You mustn't leak the answers or give hints regarding this puzzle. However, if this should happen, you'll be blacklisted, reported and all the giveaways will be deleted.

If I don't notice leaked answers, please inform me.

About

Welcome fellow Steamgifters!

I made this puzzle because I wanted to contribute something to the community. Also, I love puzzles and making one was quite fun! :)
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did with creating.

There are several stages with different ways of solving.

You'll have to solve the puzzle step by step and the first one is finding it, which shouldn't be too hard.

Unfortunately, I can't afford too much, but I'm sure there will be people who want to play the games I give away. Obviously, it's not Bad Rats (or is it?). There will be several giveaways, one of them is a whitelist one.

There is only a low level restriction (level 1+).

If it should be too hard (it probably won't), I'll give (more) hints.

Time

You have 1, 2 and 4 weeks to solve that puzzle. After this lapse of time ends, all the giveaways are over. Read more below.

Hints

  • If you're stuck, read everything carefully and twice.
  • Do not rush, look for the clues and you will find everything.
  • The puzzle is quite linear, so focus on what you're currently doing.
  • You'll need some tools for solving some parts, it should be obvious what to do though.
  • Read between the lines.

I will add further hints if needed.

Hints for Q3 of P1:

  • Think like you attend elementary school. (What are you when you attend elementary school?)
  • There are less than three different digits in the code.
  • The two digits are 0 and 1.

Slot limitation, giveaway releases

Due to my slot limitation, I'm only allowed to create 3 giveaways at once. This means there will be several phases with giveaways with links from different places, too.
You will encounter the the first links rather early. There are two giveaways, one of them is open for all and includes 2 copies, the second one is whitelist only and has a single copy. These two giveaways will last two weeks.
Later, you will find another giveaway; it will start after two weeks and end one week later.
Even later, the puzzle is finished and the last giveaways appear. The first three of them will also start after two weeks and end one week later and the last two will start after three weeks and end one week later.
When the last two giveaways end, the 4 weeks ended.

Sorry for the complexity, but I had to do it this way. :(

To clarify with a list:

  1. Part 1 of the puzzle
    • 2 copies giveaway (week 0 - week 2)
    • whitelist giveaway (week 0 - week 2)
  2. Part 2 of the puzzle
    • giveaway (week 2 - week 3)
  3. Part 3 of the puzzle
    • giveaway (week 2 - week 3)
    • giveaway (week 2 - week 3)
    • giveaway (week 2 - week 3)
    • giveaway (week 3 - week 4)
    • giveaway (week 3 - week 4)

Note: The times may vary a bit, because the winners have to mark the gift as received.

Whitelist

There's a special whitelist giveaway for some people who managed to get their name on the list!

Bump

Please bump the thread from time to time, that would be very kind, thank you. :)

Good luck and enjoy the trip! :)

Third hint (for Q3):

There are less than three different digits in the code.

So we have

  • 10 numbers.
  • Think like a child.
  • There are 2 different digits in the code (I already tried with only 1 digit).

I would say binary, but what kind of child think of binary? :S

I was thinking it might have to do with the lined paper that children use when learning to write the alphabet (see below), specifically lowercase. Something like if the letter stays between the bottom two lines, it's a 1 because it is contained in one section; if it doesn't, it's a 2 because it is contained in two sections.

That's a pretty cool idea actually! Unfortunately, it's wrong.^^ The solution is simpler. :)

My simple-minded thinking has done the following:

  1. Treat the letters as numbers. A = 1, B = 2, etc. K = 11 but since elementary school students don't have enough fingers, it's a 1.
  2. Same as above except F = 1 because elementary school students can only count on one hand.
  3. The same as above two except converting the prompt into it's letter form and subtracting it from the question.

To add a point: You also know that the same letter means the same digit, because both 'l''s of 'hello' were 7.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So we have now:

  • 10 binary digits (0/1)
  • same letters have same digits

As 2 letters appear 2 times, we have to guess 8 digits, 256 different combinations. At 2guess/min, it is 2 hours bruteforcing it.
Someone is trying to run a script on it already?

2 digits out of 10 - split in vowels/consonants
too many for me to try although I'd have expected it to be 0/1 or maybe 1/2 combination

Because 0 has an enclosed space :P

Bump for finding part 2. Or is it part 3 that as of this moment only 6 people have solved excluding the creator? And there are no hints for that one, are there? Can only get #1 and #3, which were really easy.

Edit: #5 solved as well.
Edit2: #4 bruteforced (well, on first try).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That would be part 3, but it's the second and last ITH puzzle. :)
Q2 should be easy when you know Q1, Q3, Q4 and Q5. When you got that, you should be able to solve Q7, too and in terms of content, you should also know Q6, but that one might be harder to figure out when not knowing the cipher.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I get the gist of it, but I can't make sense of what word to put at Q2, using pure guesswork. And I just can't find a cipher that works with it.

As for Q6, it feels as if Q2 has something to do with what the answer could be, because with what I have now it feels as if Q5 should be the last before Q7. So I'm definitely missing something on how it's worded, and it feels like knowing Q2 might shed some light on that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Q2 doesn't lead to Q6 in my opinion, you could also solve Q7 without solving Q6, because you don't need that answer to understand the phrase.

Regarding the non-existing direct connection between Q2 and Q6, it wouldn't be for instance "has (Q2) said (Q6)" (content wise, it wouldn't make sense anyway, this was just an example).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Once I can figure out Q2, I'll probably agree with you. But for now, I'll stick to believing you're only trying to deceive me! ;)

An answer can't contain any apostrophes, right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It can, but it doesn't. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think I'm going to have to surrender. I can't figure out any cryptos or ciphers that could result in Q2 that doesn't require a key, which might be hidden somewhere, but it's too obscure for me to find. Trying to bruteforce it I think I've tried every single modal verb imaginable. The fact that it's none of those, I can only assume the entirety of the answers is structured in a way I'm not thinking of, which is what's led me to believe that if I could only figure out Q2 or Q6, it would change the way I'm trying to fill in the gaps. That's what I mean with them being connected.

Q6 feels like it's a two-step crypto considering the characters used, or a compressor alghorithm.

If I'm talking too much about the questions, please tell me to delete the post. Not trying to spoil anything for anyone. Only me on that puzzle that hasn't solved it at the moment anyhow. :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Q2 is not a modal verb. I wonder why you can't solve it, because it's actually pretty easy to guess the word in my opinion. :/ The cipher isn't too hard either, it's quite simple and similar to some other ciphers you already solved.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Q2 solved. I don't know how or why, the word was even in my auto-complete text showing that I had written it before in that field. But now it worked. It was the very first word I tried, and it gave me a 'wrong' then. Now it worked. No wonder I couldn't guess it, I was dead certain I had already tried it. But even so, I can't figure out how to come to the conclusion the proper way.

Strange, but glad you did it! :) Q7 should be easy now, but I guess you will have to decode the cipher of Q6.

Or now that it's ended, perhaps you can provide hints so I can stop thinking about it, and add the methods into my brain storage for future reference? =P

I'm very sorry, but I was offline at that time. :( When you solve the puzzle until next week, you will at least be able to enter the last two giveaways.

Q6 is binary-to-text encoding, that could help. :)

edit: Regarding the two upcoming giveaways: Unfortunately, you already own one of them, but the other one is on your wishlist! :) (you probably already know the two games^^)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have no clue what the games are. =)

I don't think the hint helped, not like I haven't tried things like converting to binary and flipping, reversing, inversing, shifting and rotating the stacks to see if I can get new valid ascii symbols any which way. Either I'm way overthinking it, or I'm going after it so far off the reserve that I lost myself and can't find my way back to the right track.

gahhhh.. guess I'll have to try some things again this evening :-).. any hints how to proceed to part 3 after the group puzzle?

Okay, you should have got a link to a black and white image after the group puzzle. This one should be super easy to recognize and to solve, but some code readers don't read the code properly, so you'll have to use one online. When decoding it, you should've got a working link leading to another picture. But what to do with the picture? Think why I didn't host it at imgur.com for example and reading a puzzle guide on this forum might help. Good luck! :)

It shouldn't be too hard to solve the puzzle now. :D

Yeah, that's a bit vexing. FTL only had 3 entries, but I only lost $1.50 CV (15% of $10). If Skyrim doesn't reach 5 entries, I will lose $15 (100% of $15)... But at least I'm making someone happy with the game and that's worth more than a few bucks! :3
