So, a while back, I joined a guild that loved to play the F2P games because not everyone had money to waste, and we all had a great time. A few months ago, the leader left and hasn't been on it 80 days now... So I decided to take over, and rebuild us... The problem is, I don't want to play Fallen Earth over and over, and most of our members got bored of it. So I want to know, what is the Steamgifts community's favorite F2P MMO? This means no TF2 for hat sharing....

The ones I've checked out are:

  • Vanguard: Saga of Heroes #3

  • Continent of the Ninth Seal

  • Everquest

  • Everquest II #2

  • Dungeons and Dragons Online

  • Lord of the Rings Online #1

  • Pandora Saga: Weapons of Balance

  • TERA Online (recommended by user)

  • DC Universe (recommended by user)

So, look at these games, and if anyone has played them, then tell me what you think and debate amongst the other members so I can choose which one is better...

Do NOT say these games here as we have already played them or we don't want to play them.

  • APB Reloaded

  • Vindictus

  • Fallen Earth

  • Planetside 2

  • Realm of the Mad God

  • Gotham City Imposters

  • Forsaken World

  • Tribes: Ascend

  • Dragon Nest

I would recommend you to play "Lord of the Rings Online" :-)
It has a huge world to discover and you don't need to pay real money for the Item Shop, because you can also earn "Turbine Points" (the Shop Currency) by playing (but that takes a lot of time :-/ ) And it's more realistic, so the weapons and Armor don't shine / look like candy/ ect ... ^^

If you like this game, you should consider to buy the "Mithril Starter Pack" ;-)

If you are Interested in Housing: There are special zones (one from every Race, but you are not limited to the houses of your race, which means you can live as Elve in a dwarf-house ^.^) , where you can buy a House (an there are Houses for Guilds too ;-) ) which you can decorate (not which such freedom as in The Sims or so)

Lord of the Rings Online is truly a great MMO, especially if You're into that LOTR stuff. It has nice crafting system and questing feels like You're reading the book.

Also, I recommend Fallen Earth, if the one thing You look most forward to such games is crafting, as crafting in FE is really massive and it's really nice that You can customize the way You're dressed so much.

TERA online is going f2p next month, now you can play in endless trial. It's second best MMo after GW2 made in last few years. You don't have to pay for a boxed TERA to play in f2p model.

Yeah it's this game with skimpy armors and amazing action-like combat mechanics. Can be played on xbox360/ps3 CONTROLLER with no problem.

Planetside 2 promises to be but it has high demands and it is rather new game.

Personally, I played in "Lord of the Rings Online" and not accounted for me to taste, in my opinion the game does not reflect the climate the film or book and is very focused on profit.

That was one of the ones I looked at, what was it that made the game good in your opinion?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The world of Norrath is alive, I enjoyed reading quests, lore books, random dialogues. The game has a lot of content for any type of gameplay, there are many raid bosses to be slain or you can just redecorate your guild hall if you so desire. And my favourite: female armour is a real armour and not "armoured" bikini.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Okay, and that's a plus that not all armor is some skimpy armor that somehow protects you from everything... And you said decorate a guild hall, so you can get a guild hall and decorate it? What about housing? Do they have player homes?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, they do. There are different houses in several different towns ranging from hotel rooms to mansions. There are also three types of guild halls. Different kind of furniture and decorations can be found in the world and crafted.

I tried Vanguard when it was brand new and I didn't like it. To begin with I was lagging like hell, and when playing it was bearable I found very visually unappealing game with awkward interface. But like I said it was very long time ago and I played it only briefly.

Sorry, can't help you there then. Although what I can say is that when SOE introduced F2P concept to EverQuest II, this F2P was limited in some areas and if one wanted to enjoy end-game content it was more like P2W. I don't know it they changed it.

I've played Everquest, LoTRO, and Vanguard of the games you've listed. If you are going to play f2p instead of paying a monthly fee, Vanguard offers the most up front. LoTRO is a great game if you enjoy the story, you can really get in to doing a lot of the quests, especially in Moria. Everquest is nothing like it was originally (when I played), and its a ton of levels to reach the current endgame, and I hear it is pretty lonely on the way up. EQ has had its day, if you really want to play it I'd recommend Project 1999 instead, its the original EQ and first expac only, of course not on Steam. I've just recently started playing Vanguard, my first impression was meh, but I stuck through the early part, and am really enjoying it so far (level 12). Vanguard is pretty empty right now, not sure if it'll pick up with the recent f2p changes. LoTRO has more people, if you play f2p and really work at it, you can earn most of the content without paying a dime, it requires doing a lot of achievements though. My understanding is that DDO has the same sort of f2p system as LoTRO, but I've never played it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Okay, so LoTRO is great for story, Vanguard is great for no payments, EQ isn't as good anymore, and DDO is similar to LoTRO maybe?

In MMO's, I never get attached to stories... I don't think I've found one that I liked... But I playing with other guild members and owning/maintaining guilds... Someone said EQII is great, are you talking about EQ I or II?

If you are Star Trek or sci-fi fans you might try Star Trek Online, it has become quite decent after a terrible start (like most MMOs nowadays). There's plenty to do in the game. It's certainly not Eve Online, but it's free.

Dragon Nest? But only available to certain regions on Steam. And you need to be in the same region and server in order to play together.

I see you didn't list the Batman game either, Gotham City Impostors.

Forsaken World could've been something if it hadn't aped the EQ2 formula every step of the way (along with a dash of built-in F2P cash shop greediness).
