Don't know if this has been a prevalent piece of info or it is new but scammers are using another method to fly under the radar. Someone tried to scam me with the "I accidentally reported you for dupe items so please add and inform admin or ban" incident and boy oh boy, was this guy persistent or what? Anyways, in the end he ended up blocking me as per usual but when I tried to refresh the page to report him( to see if he blocked me), I could not find it. That is when I clicked on the profile option within the chat menu and found him. I was blocked but there was his profile, under a new string of custom url numbers I believe.

Either I must have been half asleep or custom URL does not have a definitive character limit. So if you're trying to report someone using their steam profile, tried to find out their actual profile links, the ones they cannot change. Also keep the chat window open if you intend on reporting or blocking. His steam profile URL looked like a normal default string of numbers both times.

Using this method, they can fly under the eye of moderation since their fake links will get reported and their actual profile will stay cleaner.

why click a link if you can get to his/her profile easily while chatting on steam?

or I just don't understand what you mean at all.

The only thing I clicked was refresh, when you go to someone's profile link, steam seems to favour using the custom URL. So if they change their URL, you won't find them unless you have the chat window open or find them from somewhere else.
I originally went to his profile from my friends list box, when he blocked and removed he, he also changed his custom URL making it so that the old link I was at, was broken. When I went to his profile again from the chat box, I saw that the custom URL has changed.

By custom URL, I mean the profile URL we can assign to ourselves. Mine is: steamcommunity.com/id/prohunted
That URL is unique to me and makes it easier to find me. If I would change my custom URL, then that link above will be broken. The scammers seem to try to mask their profile links using fake custom URLs that seem like a default steam one.

When you'd try to report scammers to communities using their profile links, they may be able to evade you because by just changing their custom URL, the URL you saw would not be valid. For such scenarios, finding out their steam ID, which cannot be changed whatsoever, is a better alternative. Since no matter what, it'll be linked to their accounts.
Of course, steam won't care about their custom URL or whatever, if you file a report against them through steam with proper evidence, steam will probably track them down eventually.

I'm surprised you waited that long, if someone adds me and the their first message is something dodge-y with a link or the second message has a link I immediately report the profile and send the texts through as evidence XD.

Was a pretty boring day so when he messaged me, I thought I could play along and try to annoy him and see how long it takes for him to realize that I was just playing with him.
