when viewing my or someone else’s profile, i’d like to see how many people have whitelisted or blacklisted whoever’s profile i’m looking at. just like gifts won and gifts sent, but without dollar amount and link to details. for example, "whitlisted: 6, blacklisted: 0." i suspect both of mine are zero, but i currently have no way of knowing. for others, if i was going to add someone to my whitelist i’d want to see if other people had already done the same.

ps: search turned up another thread, but it was closed.

what if everyone’s profile showed counts of how many users had whitelisted or blacklisted them?

View Results
yes, i would appreciate the extra numbers to look at!
meh, i wouldn’t care at all so would just ignore it.
no, i would be offended or embarrassed if people could see these numbers!

Basically just useless info being displayed. I do not want. That is just my opinion.
I want a Unicorn, driving a Tank, over a Rainbow. That is what I want on my profile.

I think people would end up blacklisting a person just because someone else or others had without really having a reason of their own. Not sure I like that.

you'd have to have a reason to look at their profile first though, unless there was also a feature to list users with high blacklist counts.

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably. It's why sites like Youtube stopped using the 1-5 star rating system because it made people kneejerk vote almost exclusively 1 or 5, trying to force the overall rating towards the point of their opinion. I'm sure that being able to see black/whitelists may have a similar effect, especially with how people throw them around so quickly.

I agree. While I understand the curiosity aspect for one's own profile, I think having that information public opens up the potential to make this site rather "cliquey".

i sort of see that, but there would only be one clique and presumably they'd be "good" steamgifters, so maybe that's not a bad thing?

I'm not sure such a feature would be helpful in any way. Let's say someone says something offensive in one thread and ends up in a number of blacklist because of it. You later see his profile, and you think "oh, that must be a bad user" but it could just happen that you agree with his unpopular opinion that landed him in trouble.

And I could be temporarily added to a bunch of whitelist for some special event a bunch of people are throwing, which would make me look all cool all of a sudden. But what if I turn out to be a real asshole and they all blacklist me later on? You might have whitelisted me based on a temporary status thinking I'm a good user while I'd be nothing of the sort.

Considering anyone can blacklist/whitelist anyone for a any reason they see fit, this number is really subjective and could actually cause prejudice. These lists are meant to be personal and represent the opinion of only one individual. I suggest you make your opinion of the people you meet on SG based on the interaction you have with them, and not based on someone else's opinion.

i’m definitely not one to form opinions based on other people’s (especially people i don’t even know), so for me it’d be more like “are other people seeing this guy act like this?” as i add to list. of course i’ve only whitelisted 2 people and i’m thinking about looking at other peoples’ blacklist counts when going to blacklist them, so not the best application of logic. i could also see public white/black list counts leading to gifters wanting to make giveaways for a minimum white-minus-black count or something like that, which doesn't sound good to me. of course niether does minimum level, but that’s already here.

you seemed to be addressing seeing other peoples counts -- what do you think about being able to see just your own? maybe i’m just trying to understand the point of whitelists and blacklists; they just seem like a lot of work to me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While I wouldn't mind being able to see on how many white/black list I might appear, I'm not sure how relevant that info is without context. Outside of stroking my ego (many white lists), or cursing at the wind(many black lists), what purpose would it provide me?

They don't necessarily require any work. Normally, you would blacklist someone you don't want entering in your giveaways for whatever reason. It would be something you do when a special situation arises and not a common occurrence.

As far as the whitelist go, some people will fill it for a specific event then delete everyone. Personally, I use it to add people who make my time spent on SG enjoyable. It built gradually with users being added here and there over the course of multiple weeks. Sometimes I will throw a giveaway for these people to show my appreciation.

Then why are you asking for numbers to be displayed, when you do not even understand them?
This is another one of those threads isn't it?

HERE - http://www.steamgifts.com/about/faq

How does a whitelist work?

  • If you view a user profile, you'll see a button with a heart icon in the left column. If you click this button, the user will be added to your whitelist. If you click this button again, the user will be removed from your whitelist. When creating a giveaway, you have the option to limit the giveaway to users on your whitelist. By doing so, the giveaway will only be visible to these users, and only they will have permission to access the giveaway and be able to enter for a chance to win. If you add new users to your whitelist after the giveaway is created, they will instantly gain access to the giveaway as well, and it'll appear on the giveaway list on their homepage. If you remove a user from your whitelist, they will no longer have access to your whitelist giveaways, but their entries will remain valid for any previous giveaways they might have entered.

How does a blacklist work?

  • On user profiles, you'll see a button that has a circle icon with a slash through it. Clicking this button will add the user to your blacklist. This means the user will no longer see your giveaways on the homepage, and they will not be able to view or enter your giveaways from this point forward. If the user entered one of your giveaways prior to being blacklisted, their entry still remains valid.

it would create snowball effects. as soon as a guy has a few blacklists for whatever reason, people would see that, assume he is the worst and blacklist him as well. i think this has the potential to go horribly wrong.

So, is it new reason to discredit limit participants of giveaways like sent/won ratio*?
Wl/bl ratio is stupid (I don't to offend anybody) cause reasons to bl are mostly stupid. Here's some examples:
"29 reasons to get bl" by wany1981's
RikiTheDark's post about one more reason for bl
"guide" "How to prevent bl" byfaboitas
KetchupGod's poll shows bl are permanent" (so you could be perfect guy but 1 mistake and get bl.)
Also, I want to remind that user who creates lot of expensive giveaways and don't say any word could (and I believe he is) get bl. Why? He's "rich" so it's reason for some bad people to bl him. It's "society", so bl number could be any without any reasons just like lottery.

*Sent/won ratio doesn't show values of sent/won gifts.

P.S.: I made 14 giveaways and get 5 blacklists some days ago. So, what do you think I should think?! I hate haters.

People should be encouraged to think for themselves not go with the flock. If 300.000 people blacklisted someone but you like that person why would you care about them being blacklisted? At the same time if they were whitelisted 300.000 times but you find them disagreeable why would you ever care about them being whitelisted by others? It's about YOUR interaction with that person not somebody else's.

To me, being able to assess someone based on their WL/BL yields no positive aspects, only negatives and leads to biased rushed conclusions and unnecessary witch hunts over petty reasons that can only be used as a justification for otherwise unjustified actions.
