Anyone else dissatisfied with the change? I don't like them. I hate Facebook and I hate forums which support emojis. I know cg meant well but... sheesh. I mean, I'll get used to it I guess, but it's still really annoying to me at the moment. Guess I'm just a grumpy old party-pooper.

I don't mind them, they can be sometimes be useful for conveying subtleties which you otherwise can't when writing. Though smileys usually work just as well for that

💩
I'm okay with them, if they won't be overused.

The emojis are only mildly tiresome to me.
What bothers me is that, with all the possible site improvements that could be done, that was chosen. :X

Just give it a few days and poeple will forget about 90% of them, only the most simplistic ones are used most of the time.
There's also the issue that just a few are shown in a somewhat similar way across all platforms so many will try to stick only to the ones that actually work and can be understood. Heck, I tried earlier and neither Firefox, Opera or Chrome could handle all of them; lots of empty boxes.

Ok I take that back, after looking at some comments for a little bit here I'm starting to dislike them too. :/

I use the colon-hyphen-close parentheses emoticon all the time. I never knew it was frowned upon here. Most forums I visit they're used in moderation and no one has ever complained. (What I really hate are long and overly decorated sigs.) :-)

As another user mentioned, the change was about correctly implementing the Unicode standard and fixing our UTF-8 character encoding that wasn't previously supporting the full range of Unicode characters. The correction allows for improved language support, additional mathematical symbols, and yes, emojis, which are typically four byte characters.

If you don't like emojis, that's fine, I don't love them either, but I expect they'll be used sparingly once the novelty ends. However, this was actually an important change for the site, and it was not about adding emojis, it was about fixing our broken support for Unicode, which has been on my to-do list for over a year. With SteamTrades opening and correctly handling Unicode, SteamGifts needed to be updated as well, before users started to wonder why certain symbols worked on one site, but not the other.

Well shit, I didn't expect an actual reply from you to be honest. :P

I totally understand the point of this update and how emojis wasn't the point of the whole thing, and to be honest I'm not blaming you. It's more of a community thing, really, where if some feature is available, it will be used by posters. We have no one to blame but ourselves for not having the same opinions about emojis - on one side are people who like emojis and on the other people who dislike them.

In the end, my thread is nothing more than a selfish rant, but hopefully a rant which will convince a few people to avoid the overuse of this new feature.

Could you please advise something to those of us who see rectangles with numbers inside instead of proper emojis?

Edit: never mind, it turns out I just had to update my fonts.

Any chance of getting them removed from thread titles?
Or, while I'm poking you, at fixing SteamTrade's eye-searing background?

In addition to cg's reply in your thread, he also updated his announcement post to:

The database was upgraded to the latest software release, and all of our data was converted to an improved character set, allowing for four byte symbols, while our previous format was limited to symbols between one to three bytes. In short, the site now has better support for a variety of languages, and countless new symbols and icons available to use, as seen in this post title. Similar to comment formatting, try to use them appropriately. Thanks!

psh. you're far too young to be a "grumpy old party-pooper.", unless you've been lying through your teeth in your last birthday threads.
Anyway, yeah. Emojis. Ok if used occsaionally, not Ok if used as a poor substitute for proper language.

And that's coming from someone who's old and grumpy. I just don't feel like pooping on parties...

So, to summarize, you hate every modern site? Because, you know, if site is tends to be international - it has to be in unicode encoding, and if it supports unicode - it has emojis... That's sad actually. I'm glad about emojis, but I don't want anyone to be upset because of it.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah emoji's are stupid, we don't need them! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ It's not like we ever used them before!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Tongue firmly in cheek btw.... (..) ( l: ) ( .-. ) ( :l ) (..)

But its not like everyone wasn't using them anyway right?

I couldn't care less about them within threads, but speaking as someone with visual-interpretation difficulties, they're a fuckstorm to work through in thread titles, where they make comprehension a bit more difficult. Honestly, I don't even imagine that challenge is limited to just me in this instance, I doubt too many people find spewing random images all throughout a list improves its readability.
