Hi! This might be answered somewhere else, but I could not find an answer for it.

I recently finished a giveaway and the user has yet to activate and mark the gift as received. Just in case this ends up happening, what happens if a user claims a key with a different account and then says the provided key is invalid?

Thanks in advance.

Sadly not much you can do about that since it can't be checked :(

That is really disappointing. Let's hope this is not the case.

Not sure if it's possible to have Humble revoke the key?

EDIT: Apparently this is the worst idea in the world. Don't do it.

lol, contact Humble and ask them to revoke a key, they will probably just call you a trader or reseller and then lock your account. With their reputation, it's probably best to never contact them unless absolutely necessary.

Noted and reflected above. :)

Even if that's possible it's not worth doing.

Humble are much more likely to ban OP from the site rather than revoke the key. Humble policy is gifts are meant for close friends and family; if they think someone is buying keys for a stranger they will/have banned those people.

Answer to your question: Nothing happens. Except you can deliver 100% proof to support. If you can not, well, nothing happens.
Because it happened to me more than once, I stopped doing public giveaways.

Edit: The winner has seven days to claim the key and mark it as received. I just saw that your giveaway only ended one day ago, so you have to be patient for a little while longer.

Unless you buy a game directly on steam how can you ever 100% proof it? You can't.

You will see an eye icon next to the key if the winner has actually revealed the key. Most likely he did not do that yet.

Also, I believe you can ask Steam support to provide you when a key was activated. They won't tell you what account or anything else, but this may help if you don't trust the winner.

As said above, not much to be done.

But in my 2000+ giveaway, I only remember very few (2?, 3?) giveaways where the winner claimed to have issues with the key. So from my point of view this seems not to be a problem, but you see users with other experiences above.

Well, that will be bad.

I don't see any real reason why a winner would do that. Furthermore if he does it a few times support will notice and he will be suspended.

It's not like we all live in utopia. There are scammers out there too.

No we certainly do not live in utopia but what's in it for such bad people? I mean they already got the game for free. Why causing trouble and risking the sg account?

I've had a similar issue before. My guess is they're hoping to get a second copy out of it.

You're right. I didn't thought about this point. Nevertheless I can not imagine that it is worth it. I mean how likely is it that you win the same game again.

I don't mean that they're trying to win it again, but to have the GA creator buy another copy for them.

That's also unlikely to work out. If the creator contacts the shop and ask for a replacement key the shop normally revoke the first key or nowadays more common the creator won't replace the key at all and ask for deletion/take the not received.

I agree, it most likely won't work out. Doesn't mean people don't try though ┻━┻ミ\(≧ロ≦\)

Because some people are greedy a##holes that try to get two or three , yes that happened unexperienced friends on sg too, copies to sell/trade one key.
And sg have a good bunch of them.

Valid point. I still like to believe that's a really rare occasion and was extreme bad luck for your friend to get such a winner. I never had such a case in my over 2000 giveaways.

He had 2 of such ones.
But to be fair he is a sheep that believe all that strangers tell him. And told them direct he buy a new key -instead to try to exchange the "dupe" key in the shop-. Because he had the keys from Fan or HB, it should nearly never happen that a key make problems and when you buy a second one then it is absolutely impossible that both make problems, without that someone on sg would write something about bad keys.

I had with all my GAs only two that wanted to grab a second key and a few where i trust in the info that the key was dupe.

I've been on the opposite end, I won a key from a GA and the DLC in question had recently been given away on mass. First key was a dupe, replacement I was offered was also a dupe. They said they had no replacement to give and I wouldn't doubt they'd think me trying to farm spare keys. I still feel bad about it even though they probably BL'd or plain forgot me and moved on lol.

I am sure he don't had this keys from a purchase on Fanatical or Humble Bundle ^^

I had unsure keys and made a GA. The winner needed 4 days to come along, after he checked his autojoiner if he won something..., the first key were a dupe. I gave him 3 Min. later a other one but he needed, again, 4 days till he came back and said the 2nd key is a dupe too. I replaced the key again and, you assume right, he came back after 4 days and said the key is dupe.
After that he don't wanted to try more keys (i still had 3 for the game) and marked it as not recieved.
It was really annoying, because of the long time it took, about the "bad mark" of the unrecieved win in my stats (nowadays i don't care if there are 20 written...) and because he don't wanted to test more keys -all other games from the same source that i gave away were ok after max. the second key, so i strongly assumed 6 keys will be enough to deliver the promised game-.

So in the end you can always have luck or unluck with the winner and/or the gifter.

I've noticed you had a lot of useful advice on spotting bots and the like, and while I am not nearly as keen-eyed as you are, at the very least, it led to me making Level 2+ GAs more often. Most of my Level 0 to 1 GAs are either 0CV or limited to a specific group/GL these days. So I'm always appreciating seeing one of your posts in topics like these, haha.

Thanks for the feedback and that you make level 2+ GAs :o)
That motivate me to invest the time for writing sometimes advices that are maybe useful for the one or other.

I mean sometimes I cave and make lower than level 2 but that's usually reserved for 0 CV entries or mass-GA games anyways. I'm always interested in learning more, so I've been casually lurking (for the most part) to try and learn the ways.

If you have or plan to have your own FAQ on these things, I'd be totes on board! As a filthy casual I still have much to learn even years later, haha.

I'd expect a "professional" reaction from the winner meaning screenshots of the failed activation attempt on his Steam account. If he can't provide proof it wouldn't believe the winner and the retail store would deny rightfully any possible claim for a replacement key.

If he says the key is "Invalid"
you could check the key yourself on your account if you dont own the game .
the key would say "Duplicated code".
You could ask steam/publisher on activation date and if the activation date is after the giveaway end ,the support would probably mark the giveaway as Received .
A winner has 7days though so calm down ^-^

If you got the key from a store like HumbleBundle or Fanatical, i would say the key must be ok in 99.9999999% of the cases.
When someone tell me the key isn't ok and i have it from such a source, then i write him from which source i have it and say "please try again to activate it, maybe it was only a steam hicup that made a problem", when that don't help then i contact steam to get the date when the key got activated and at the same time i write HB/Fan and tell them the key is dupe and that they should please give me a new key and , the most important thing, REVOKE the old one (they are more willing to exchange the key that way because they see you don't try to get a second one and if the winner activated the key on a other account he don't had long fun with it^^), then i wait that they answer me and how the winner react in the meantime.
Of course i check the winner very closely and decide if i trust his words or not, partly based on the infos from steam, my experience and his used words/sentences.

I had a case were a winner came then angry around and said the key (that he couldn't activate) got revoked... maybe not the smartest move :-D .

If i absolutely don't believe the winner, then i don't do all the work listed above and say he should mark it as not recieved.
I check his account then closely and try to find traces to "friends, family etc.", with other words to his other account(s). And when i find it/them he don't have fun^^, because i will find something to report him for (multiaccounting, not activated his win, regifting, insults or whatever).

Don't forget to set level restrictions (like 3+ minimum) to exclude 99%+ of possible scammers, and secondly, you can request for date of key activation from Steam support if they are in good mood to check when the key was activated

Yeah, if it's actually a valuable game, asking Steam Support for the activation timestamp is the way to go.

The level 0 winners are slow to check their win most of the time. And there is a very low chance somebody stole a bundled very cheap key because there is only a few euro cents of profit on them.
Check when the winner logged into steamgifts last, maybe he just doesn't see the win yet. Find his steam profile and leave a comment about the win, or old steamgift forum comment of his and comment there

If you can prove well enough that it has ended in wrong place it can lead to permanent suspension of the account. Though the bar here is rather high.
