From what I read, it specifically has to do with the legal costs associated with the numerous lawsuits against them, which increased their spending beyond budget projections.
The severance packages they are giving their laid off employees are actually pretty sweet all things considered.
One interesting thing to come from this was finding out that they own Bandcamp and that they're selling Bandcamp.

yeah but no one talks about how to pay of leaving employees. people aren't able to inform themselves properly without fuming in their ignorance towards an open market and competition, and that competition is very important

It's not the free games, it's the stupid spending. Huge budgets for parties and other BS. Also greedy CEO and investors. (See rest of gaming industry)

3.6 million are peanuts for them. just inform yourself.
they made 5,8 Billion $ in 2021, just Fortnite made 1.1 Billion $ (just on mobile devices)

It was expected. They built a business model that they knew was not meant to last, on a gamble, to try and take on the biggest actor in the market.
Who pays for it in the end? The same people who busted their asses to make it happen.
