Hello guys and gals,

I am excited to finally present you the first issue of SGM Monthly!

Our Group worked on it for the past month, and now it is finally here for the SG community to enjoy.

Please click on this for the "Magazine Experience". The recommended method to discover and flip through the magazine's pages! I highly recommend using your headphones while going through the magazine, as the sound effect of flipping the page is really wholesome. Also, keep in mind, for easier navigation use "Control" + scroll wheel to easily zoom in and out on the pages. You can also hold left click to drag around the page. It just makes it easier and more satisfying to read this way :)

I will add a simple PDF version with a much higher quality of the page, but that version will be available tomorrow.

Please consider voting for the review that you've enjoyed the most. The winner will be decided on 15th of March.

Feel free to comment below on the current issue. we're looking forward to your feedback!
For group requests or suggestions, comment in the Central Hub.

edit: The PDF version is available for download here. This version can be printed and it's full HD quality, compared to the magazine version.

The whole thing is really impressive; a few minor mistakes, but it's all very well laid out and visually striking, with a solid variety of content. Great job to everyone involved!

Amazing SGM! Page 4 and 5 background colour looked blunt. Everything else has a premium look. Signals and The Evil Within had a detailed review! Loved it! Some titles like Noita seemed as if the person is not into roguelikes!
As a 1st Issue very Remarkable job CentralHub Team!

Amazing work by you and the team, it looks great, and it's fun to read! Can't wait to see how this progresses!

One bit of feedback -- I thought the "News" page was a bit hard to read, I would love to see the headlines be in a different font from the articles, and maybe bolded or underlined.

Not bad. So, critiques:
I felt some of the reviews were too wordy, but eh, who am I to judge.
Had to zoom in quite a bit for a few of the pages to be able to read them without squinting, so suspect that's got to do with some of the font selections and colours used that others also brought up.
Last page of Noita (p26) lost the running theme of the first three pages.
Also, I feel the mascot needed to show up earlier in the magazine (introduced, perhaps, and have a brief say at the start or end of the magazine as well?), I was initially unsure if the mascot was just the avatar of the first reviewer. heh.
Lastly, Skeletor. You did so well to not incorporate extraneous IPs, and even had a mascot. And then that. IR disappoint.

I have never been interested magazines and that probably won't change because I don't find it enjoyable to consume that type of content, but I skimmed through it and I was very surprised by how good it turned out. It was much better than I thought it was going to be after reading the main thread.

The one thing that I felt was missing is a dark mode for the background/border. I'm guessing that is controlled by the site though and you can't change it. There are probably extensions I could use to do it myself if I really wanted to.

I may not read magazines, but you, and everyone else that helped, have created something really nice for those that do. There is a great community here. Thanks for all the time and effort all of you put into it :)

Congratulations on the job well done.
There are some things that could be changed like the picture that was chosen for my name doesn't correspond with mine.
In my review the writing could be improved upon. My fault for rushing and sending the first draft. If you will edit something for the pdf version I would like for you to check my last sent one. It might improve a bit.
Don't be discouraged to play death's door because of the cons stated at the end. The puzzles are not hard, there is a specific one involving pots in the witch estate garden, that you need to check the old photograph, one of the many random objects you pick in the world, to know the answer. Which doesnt make much sense, since the only other collectible that has a use is rusty belltower key(they are 24 in total).

The magazine looks amazing, that must have taking so much time :O Good job to everyone that worked on it :)

My only remark, and I don't even know if it's possible but, would it be possible to click on screenshot to enlarge that screenshot? Because at the moment I feel they're very tiny. Just a thought.

On a side note, I do remember Doom the movie :D I even went to see it in theaters. While it's certainly a mediocre and forgettable experience, from what I remember about it is that it does kind of follow a similar story to Doom 3 where they go to Mars to investigate missing scientists? I could be wrong though it's been so long.

Finally had time to read and this made me feel nostalgic. I still have some 20 years old LEVEL magazines somewhere and I saw the similar light here. First of all, very good for a first issue even so it's open to improvement. I wasn't expecting an animated flipbook and not gonna lie it felt good, even though I usually prefer simpler things. Also loved the mascot.

Now I can add some design-wise advises:

  • As much as different font selection for every theme looks nice from a distance, from an accessibility point that also makes the readability lower. I would say pick a fewer number of font types (e.g. one sans, one serif, some slab fonts) and only use these for the main body, themed fonts still would be nice as titles.
  • Color use is generally good but for some pages the color temperature could've been better, again from a readability point. If you're gonna use complex backgrounds, might as well consider using white or black shadows for writing parts as well, shady font backgrounds would also work as you did for some pages. If the contrast is good enough no need for any of these though. Also using more pastel colors could be better.

I generally liked the design frame and making all these in a short time of period is impressive. Thank you for all the work. \o/

Thank you for the support and for the suggestions!

I will definitely look into on the readability of the text. I went for different fonts for each review in order to give it it's own unique look and feel.

It was a challenge to do it in a month (a short one too), but it was also a lot of fun. I am sure for the next one the process will go much smoother, now that I have a full team that supports the project.

Wowwiee!! This was such a treat to go through. I only perused through some of the reviews. And I got to say really well done. The artwork/editing is amazing! Thats what makes it also so readable to attention deficient individuals like me.
Keep up the great work :)

I'm still currently reading the magazine so far (I'm so slow...), and must admit that it's really cool.
From the POV of someone who isn't actually fluent in english, it's overall easy enough to read and pretty much enjoyable. (just had to check for a few words in the biggest reviews).
Nice job 👍

Ps: can't believe you really added Barbie Girl into the playlist 😂

I have a question regarding the method I am planing to share the PDF version of the magazine, here in this thread.
Would it be against the rules to post the file transfer link? The link is safe, but it's an external link to a download file..

No, that should be fine. I'd recommend sticking to a reputable filesharing resource, but that's not a requirement.

Obviously, sharing virus-filled files or other malicious content is a no-no. ;)

I'll use FileTransfer.io since I never had any issues with it and I use it at work too.

When I first read your thread about doing this I wasn't really sure what to expect when it was completed and now that I see the final product I have to say it turned out awesome! Seriously this is great, thanks to everyone who contributed to the project. The reviews are great and I love all of the extras in there.

I saw there were reviews with different labels. Most had "Review" on them and then "Retro Review" for Worms Armagedon and "Main Review" for Necromunda: Hired Gun. I was curious what the criteria is for each type of label. Worms Armagedon is from 1999, so I see how it fits in Retro. Is there a specific year you've decided on for a game to be in the "Retro Reviews"? For "Main Review" what is the criteria for that and what makes it different than the ones with just "Review"?

I did want to mention there was one line of text that's really hard read due to the color on the SGM's Playlist. The one for "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood in yellow text in the middle of the list.

Hello and thanks for the support!

It honestly came out better than I envisioned it when I created the first thread. And I had to drop a few sections that would had made the magazine even more diverse. I had to respect the promised release date though. Hoping that Issue #2 will turn out even better!

About the review sections. There are basically 3 at the moment (with plans to add more in future issues)

  • Review (the usual reviews)
  • Retro Review. Games from 2005 or older. I don't know why I came up with 2005 as the decisive year, it just felt right for me, since I personally think it was an important year for gaming. Many games launched after 2005 felt "fresh" and "innovative" to me.
  • Main Review is the cover game review. And the cover game review is usually the "biggest, newest and most exciting title" of the issue. I know Necromunda: Hired Gun doesn't really fit that criteria, when we had Just Cause 4 in the same issue, but I've already worked on the cover for it before receiving the review for JC4 so I just went with it.

About the hard to read text. I will try to imporve the readability of the next issue by picking better color schemes and font.

The main review makes sense as it's the featured review on the front cover. Smh don't mind me, I had a brain fart. lol

The Necromunda looks like a really cool game and the review is good so I can see why it was chosen.

I forgot to mention "Free 2 Play" as a review listing as well.

I'm really glad you started this, I enjoyed reading it. I'm looking forward to checking out the next one. :)

The FREE2PLAY section can be considered a mini-review, sure. But since it doesn't have a score and verdict assigned at the end, it just didn't felt right for me to call it a review. It's more of a suggestion, like "hey, there's this cool free game you can check out!". All games featured in that section will be considered "good games" since that's why we recommend them in the first place, so there was no reason for rating them :D

I hope to boost the pages number to 70 next issue! :)

Thanks for the clarification on the Free2play section.

I think adding more is great, as the first edition is awesome, just don't get caught in a trap to where you feel every issue "has to have" X number of pages. I did something like this a long, long time ago for a gaming clan I was in and after several editions I ended up putting myself in that trap. I was so worried about making it bigger and better that the overall quality ended up being lower towards the end due to it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, definitely. I am aware of that trap.

The reviews quality will remain the same. It's just the extra sections we're going to add that we're experimenting with. It's going to be a hit or miss with some of them, but it shouldn't affect the overall quality of the magazine.
