I've taken a liking to the Batman Arkham games, and I'm enjoying Rise of the Tomb Raider. Some similarities that I've noticed about them:

  • more or less metroidvania
  • semi open world (side quests, hidden things to find for exp and/or flavor)
  • on rails linear through portions of the game
  • sections in which you're rewarded for maintaining stealth, but it's not required
  • puzzle solving
  • gameplay doesn't get extremely bogged down by plot

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I've, for the most part, stopped replying to individual posts. I'm still whitelisting people, though. Thanks again!

Something a bit different from the other suggestions here (which are pretty great):
Mark of the Ninja
It's quite heavy on 2D stealth, but beautiful gameplay! Not an open world by any means, but each stage has a few hidden rooms and puzzles to solve. Enemies can be distracted, brutally murdered, psychologically traumatized, or completely avoided (except bosses - but even those have multiple different methods to defeat).

+1

was seing the original post and my first thought was that the mentioned games in here are not metroidvania-like at all. At least not when it comes to how I see the term.

This is how I meant it. I guess I'm not sure what the "official" use would actually be.

Someone probably mentioned it already but Dishonored maybe? I liked it especially because you can play this game in comepletely different ways (stealth mode or killer mode), depending on what playstyle suits you more.
Oh, and Bioshock Infinite. Just because it's love.

Pretty much my favourite kind of game too, I stopped playing the first Arkham game because I had really unreliable broadband at the time and the game would actually quit whenever the connection got dropped :( I really must go back and complete it one day (internet is finally decent now).

They're getting a bit old now (and you've probably played them already?), but I loved all the 3D Legacy of Kain games (Soul Reaver 1 and 2 etc).
I'd also second the recommendations for Dishonored 2 (loved the first one, loved the second too), and the two recent Deus Ex games.
I'm also really enjoying the second Styx game, having finally gotten the first on sale a couple of weeks ago (and enjoyed that). As Mully said they're essentially all stealth, but you usually have an option to fight if you get spotted.

P.S. Thanks for the ESGST giveaways! ๐Ÿ™‚

You're welcome ;-)

I remember watching my friend play Soul Reaver when it first came out (that was LoK, right?) and I was "meh" about it back then. Have they aged well? I remember thinking back then it looked kinda wonky...not that everything is about graphics.

Soul Reaver was my introduction to the series, but it actually began with a 2D game called Blood Omen (I went back and tried that, but never really got into it). Then there was Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Unfortunately, like most 3D games they are showing their age especially SR1 (the Dreamcast version of SR1 is apparently the best, as the Windows version was ported from the inferior PlayStation version). I'd love to see the series get a modern HD remaster ๐Ÿ˜€

The original game used Games For Windows Live, which has been removed and replaced with Steam's workings (the DRM check, achievements, etc.). The good news is that it works like any other Steam game now. The bad news is that you'll have to start over, if you were hoping to pick up from an old save you had on your hard disk.

I haven't played very far into it yet, but perhaps Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning? I think it meets many of your requirements and so far it seems pretty fun (with the exception of the dispelling mechanic to remove wards off of chests - hate that part). The full collection also goes on sale for about $10CDN fairly frequently.

I really liked Tomb Raider (and now RotTR) as it's felt similar to Assassin's Creed.
I played all of them before Unity (as my PC keeps crashing on this one) and I really love them all
I haven't managed to get into the Batman games, although I love him as a Character. But maybe I should try again.

If you don't mind a game wich is technically a bit outdated how about giving Beyond Good & Evil a chance?
It's a great game wich I think fits your listed criteria pretty well and also it is not expensive.

I like all kinds of games. But my favorite ones so far would be Saints Row series and Remember Me. And I would highly suggest them to you. Remember Me looked like a different game to me when I played it. ( I don't know if there is a game similar to it... haven't seen any :D) And I love Saints Row series cause it has a great sense of humor.

I'm pretty late to the party here....but since you ignored it so far in the 3 posts where it was mentioned:
Beyond Good and Evil
Beyond Good and Evil really is a gem of a game with a really lively open world with lots of things to discover inbetween the mainstory missions (in which you have to uncover a big conspiracy) and lots of optional minigames (air hockey-like tablegame, a shell game, racing, hoverboard chases, taking photos of every species, optional map-parts that require simple puzzles solving, combat or stealth) that reward pearls which are required for hovercraft-upgrading and thus reaching previously unreachable parts of the world to advance in the mainstory.
Also I have to mention that it got an amazing soundtrack which really adds to it's atmosphere.

But some of it's stealth sections in the mainmissions are pretty much mandatory to do that way aaaaand the game is now nearly 14 years old....(just in case that is something that would deter you)

Other then that the previously mentioned games of Far Cry 3+4 are really close to the two latest Tomb Raider games, the two newer Deus Ex games fit into this category pretty well too I'd say.

And if you are into completly insane/funny/stupid stories Saints Row 3 + 4 and Just Cause 2 + 3 could also be something you'd lik though they are more like GTA on drugs..

It wasn't so much ignored as I was getting overwhelmed with responses :-)

I've entered many GAs for that and will keep an eye out for it during the Christmas sale!

I absolutely loved the SR and JC games <3

Well..looked like you ignored it, because you answered 2 of those who suggested it, but didn't say anything about this game^^.
But yeah asking for advice (for good games) here can give way more responses way faster then anticipated :O

Oh and even though the game maybe doesn't really fit your desription here that much I always recommend: Anima: Gate of Memories since winning it here. Maybe keep an eye out for it on christmas sale too if it looks interesting to you.
Had a real blast with it despite it having some quirks and a bad intro section (after the first boss when you are actually in the tower I liked the game way more...)

YES, my favorite! Tomb Raider (2013) is my favorite, followed by the Batman: Arkham games and RotTR.

I'd also recommend ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry (although this one isn't quite up to par with the other games gameplay and story-wise, it has gorgeous combat to make up for it) :D

Will be back to read the other responses when I get the time to do so~!

I'm sort of wondering why I didn't see anyone mention the Demon/Dark Souls games at all based on what you've listed as your interests... They have fairly open(ish) corridor regions where you can decide on multiple routes, at least sometimes, to get from point A to point B. Fighting styles can be varied greatly based on character, equipment, and skill/magic preferences. It's pretty brutal gameplay with lots of dying but can be really rewarding too.
Also the Dead Rising series would fall into this category too, although that's more of a massacre anything coming your way, but one can go about it different ways, choose different routes, etc.
If you don't mind older graphics there's also E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, which sort of runs along the lines of Deus Ex-ish FPS type setup where your play style is influenced based on the character class you pick as to whether you approach via stealh, controlling turrets/enemies, straight run n gun or the like.

I worry that Dark Souls will kick my ass :-)

I've had my eye on the Dead Rising series, but have yet to delve into it.

There were many, many times I entered E.Y.E. GAs, but I ultimately stopped. I can't recall why, but I might give it another look.

I kind of had the same reaction to EYE but I figured it sort of fit the description type you gave so might as well mention it.

The difficulty bit in Dark Souls that everyone talks about is kinda overdone IMO. Yeah you're going to die a good number of times when you start out, but bit by bit you'll make it farther into the level, until you end up hitting a switch and opening up a shortcut that you don't have to take that portion that was handing you your ass a little bit ago anymore. Then you'll get a bit farther and you'll be realizing, "hey these guys are actually not so bad." and then BAM! you may run into someone around a corner who rips you into tiny little squares to use as toilet paper, but then you'll end up going back again to the part that was originally kicking your ass and find that it actually isn't that bad anymore, you can actually kind of breeze through it now that you've seen a bit more. Oh hey, is that a different corridor that I missed when I was going through before worrying about one of these little peasants, lets go look over there.... And then you may find another guy in need of some fleshy toilet paper squares and realize that OK, next time I'll take a left instead of hanging right. It may be tough and kick your ass, but when you progress or find a shortcut it's really rewarding, and then you find yourself going back to farm a little to give your fleshy TP squares a bit of an edge so that the next time someone wipes their ass with you, you give them a nice little cut or two, and then you find that you can get just that bit farther again... and repeat.

That sounds fun for not-full-time-job-with-two-kids me...but who knows? I might actually like it.

How are reload times on death? Anything less than instant seems like it would be infuriating.

Yeah, I've only got the single toddler and job to deal with when trying to find some time to sink in. But who needs sleep anyways. It works pretty well for being able to set for about 30-45 to an hour sessions. You won't make huge progress most times, but that timing actually works fairly well for the iterations on slowly improving and learning the quirks and patterns of everything. Also having some of the shorter bursts at least for my end help with reducing the rage quit urge.

As far as reload times on death there aren't really any. You do get punished by losing all of the souls you've collected (you get to keep items/equipment though) and respawning at the start of the world you're playing (game consists of 5 or 6 worlds all but one of which can be selected from the get go, but having varying difficulties). Basically you die, the screen blacks out for a second and then you respawn at the world start. As I said all equipment/items collected you keep, also all switches/levers/unlocked doors and shortcuts remain present. The enemies respawn and you have a chance to get your souls back if you can make it back to the last place you died, you'll have to fight your way back; but at least you won't be sitting staring at a loading screen before having to do so.
Edit: just thought to add on, while the enemies respawn on death, bosses are more like changing the level so that should you manage to beat them you don't have to worry about fighting them again should you accidentally fall off the cliff right afterwards or anything.
