The Amazon Rainforest Challenge!

Where: Amazon basin, South America
What: The largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world

Interesting facts:

  • The Amazon basin encompasses 7,000,000 square kilometres (2,700,000 sq mi), of which 5,500,000 square kilometres (2,100,000 sq mi) are covered by the rainforest.
  • The rainforest spans 9 countries in South America: Brazil (60% of the rainforest), Peru (13%), Colombia (10%), Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
  • It comprises an estimated 390 billion individual trees and is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals.
  • More than 56% of the dust fertilizing the Amazon rainforest comes from the Bodélé depression in Northern Chad in the Sahara desert. The dust contains phosphorus, important for plant growth. The yearly Sahara dust replaces the equivalent amount of phosphorus washed away yearly in Amazon soil from rains and floods.
  • The Lower Amazon begins where the darkly colored waters of the Rio Negro meet the sandy colored Rio Solimões, and for over 6 km (4 mi) these waters run side by side without mixing. This area is also called Encontro das Águas (Meeting of Waters).
  • Deforestation is a major threat to the ecosystem of the rainforest and a cause of increased greenhouse emissions, reduced biodiversity, disruption of water cycles, increased soil erosion and a threat to indigenous peoples.

GOOD LUCK on the challenge! Create for us some breath-taking masterpieces of the Amazon Rainforest for some awesome GA wins!

Looks nice, good selection of colours.

Sidenote about the challenge:
I thought it would be a vastly different picture (haven't even looked at the dots), with more of an overview of a rain forest, instead of something that could just as well have been taken in a zoo. :P

Me too, I had an idea for this one, but if that is the picture, it won't work. :P

it also can be taken in some one's flat ( since plant is common and birds you can buy for: toucan - 450$, parrot - 250-300$)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha, yeah.

I more meant it didn't really fit the description of a Rain forest. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it would be better if there were some additional rainforest trees on background (but prodably then it would be 1000+ dots)

Note: since this dot to dot image is simple and doesn't really do justice in highlighting the landmark of the Rainforest... we will be allowing you the option to minimize the focus of birds and plant and add detail that emphasizes the Rainforest itself. We don't want the content to limit your creativity. We will be lenient because this dot to dot image is lacking... it's a jungle out there so just go wild with this one.

Refer to above conversation...

I mean, can we use 'non-focus-rule' only if we're gonna draw rainforest?

That's what he's saying, yes.

As usual, I have problems with understanding people ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think what you're asking for is can you make the birds and leaf picture be a tiny icon picture on the side of a huge spaceship.... for example

Focus still needs to be on landmark theme... focus doesn't have to be on birds however... the focus rule still remains but we will be flexiable on focus on this content of birds as long as complete submission is still focused on Rainforest theme.

Missile launcher? No, it should be a chicken launcher!

Interesting that you put the parrot and it's bransch in the front. Everyone else has that one in the back. :) Nice switch on perspective!

Thanks... I purposefully left two leaves intertwangled so you can see how 3D and fun it is to manipulate the content...

It looks SO MUCH better in real life... The black has really neat texture from fingernailling it also but it doesnt show when taking pictures... nor alot of the depth of it...

The metallic background also looks better in real life. I should have taken more time with lighting to get best effect...

Nice added detail on the parrot's bransch, very subtle. Also nice that you let it continue down instead of how the original makes it end in mid air.

I have a feeling he's more treated like a coffee table by the parrot. I don't think the tucan will be able to drink that himself without spilling it.
