It's been a month since I stumbled upon and started playing Steamgifts. The game hooked me and I decided to write a short review on it.

At first glance, the game is very primitive with meager mechanics. But this is an erroneous impression.

The developers really laid down only the basic functionality and, if you won’t try to figure it out, the whole game will be no better than an ordinary clicker… But once you understand the role of the community in the game - the game will reveal its full potential.

Wide range of factions to join

Of course you can play solo, but this way you will limit your player experience. In the vastness of Steamgifts you can find clans and societies (both open and closed (and even hidden!)) of all possible alignments. From Lawful good to Chaotic evil and everything between.

I was lucky enough to discover some assassins to fight my backlog along with nice group of people who thinks that games are actually worth playing and one more group with regular joined raids on their wins :)

Community made mods and addons

One more aspect of the game that makes it more pleasant. There are puzzles and events (some of which are small good games in their own right) here and there conducted by regular players. For a while I did not notice some of them, but as soon as I read zelgh magic guide to basic sg puzzling I began to notice more such events.

And there are plenty of mods that can be used on top of the Steamgifts - my mod of choice is the Enhanced SteamGifts (ESGST) - with it, the game interface becomes much more pleasant and richer in function.

My overall rating: ★★★★☆

Thank you for reading to the end :) My first discussion topic here, and I'm a little worried about how appropriate such a post is. Using some community advice for the future would be helpful for me. Zero critics here? I don't think so. Getting feedback is always important.

You created a topic.
You have unlocked the "Blacklist"-DLC.

Veteran players of SG may invite you to the "Whitelist"-DLC now, since they now know of your existence. But most veterans will only send you the secret invite link when your /played will be much, much higher.

Yep, both seems to be unlocked :D

Thank you! At first I was thinking that getting to high level is important, but already can see that it is just a slight advantage in public giveaways, no more than that. All the fun is hidden in groups and communities where the level is not so important :)

Awesome review! Truly expresses how you felt about the game in a clear and understandable manner.
4/10, needs more cat pictures.

(Btw, you linked to Playing Appreciated twice. Not sure if you meant to point to a different group the second time or not. ^_^' )

PA linked twice by a mistake, one link should have led to "pagywosg". Fixed it, also added a cat. Thank you for your attentiveness!

A hidden DLC, seems not to be available anymore, the mob queen and rabid minions.

Nothing lost really, seems was glitched.

And a special achievement can be done:

Free Konrads!

You must save his brother to get it.

Too good in fact, we need a sequel to this masterpiece! More QOL updates! Unlimited power with endless depression and a masterful story mode!

Ha! When teaching students how to insert an image in Microsoft Word, I have them enter "The best computer student". Then I have them insert that cat at the keyboard. :)

You did a lot in just a month of joining. I remember when I joined my first month was like: "I'm just going to try everything to see if this is real." I joined on Jul 4, 2021. My first game won was on Sep 9, 2021, but that was only after I felt like I needed to invest in the community to see if there's any returns. So, it happened that I ended up with a spare key. I have my very first on Aug 22, 2021, a month later after joining Steamgifts.

I then realized that giving is as fun as receiving. So, my journey started.

I only started joining groups 5-6 months later. I wanted people to get accustomed to me and I get accustomed to them as I find the community quite pleasant.

Welcome to Steamgifts!

Thanks! I think that this (in my case) is just a coincidence. I was struggling to find something that will drive my attention from the reality and will replace doom-scrolling. Steamgifts turned out to be a great replacement of the doom-scrolling :) There are so many game I wasn't even aware about (2,534 games have been added to your filter list), checking each of them, deciding if I will want or not to play them - that is really taking up some time and "mind space". And then I learned more about community, met some good people and learned about other sides of the "service". I'm finally playing games actually - that is already a win for me :)

Your review is spot on like in many MOBAs or MMORPGs the starting area can be a drag but if you pull through game play can become rather addictive.

Welcome to the game.I hope you stay for a LOOOOOOng time.Like Eternity and such. The site is great, general community is great and the GAs,ofcourse are great. There are some people, however, who blacklist for no reason at all or for doing a GA,I mean GAs are supposed to be the plot of this "game" but some users will blacklist you for doing just that, don't mind them and enjoy all the GAs(getting and giving).Peace.

I'm still figuring out how I feel about black and white lists. But it is definitely an extremely interesting component of everything what happens here and, especially regarding blacklists - very often makes no sense :)

btw, I noticed you already reached the 4th level of the game. That was really quick. most players are still stuck at Level 0 or 1 even after playing it for years. Nice play!

It turned out that it is not that hard to level up here. Also it turned out that level is not that important - all the fun is not hidden by "level wall", but by the "community wall" :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup. I did tell you that if you are into it just for entering GAs, then leveling up becomes irrelevant after a point. However, it's a nice way to encourage people to create GAs.
Surely the "community wall" is the real wall here.

Ratings are always subjective ¯_(ツ)_/¯
And take into account that I am a noob and over time I can change my mind.

But from my point of view most of listed things are improved (to some extent) by the community :) Though there are lot of room for improvements on the developers side for sure .

Sorry, missed your message :(
English is not my native, so I probably misunderstood you.

  • "stale membership" - I understood it as "old members of the community lost interest to the SG and not that active as they were"; I was able to find both new and old users, who are active and making community events outside of SG.
  • "dead forum" - I understood it as "there are lack of good topics and discussions on the SG"; partly I agree, as 80% of current topics are not interesting to me, but there are still some good ones to read. Also outside of SG I got an opportunity to get more interesting topics to read/participate. For example there are some great posts on BLAEO and a lot of discussions in Discord.
  • "Disinterested ownership" - I understood it as "owners of the SG are not interested in making it better"; I'm too new to decide if it is true or not, but again - to me it seems that community is trying to improve it through various scripts and external services (sgtools, EGGST and other).
  • "Overly sensitive participants" - I understood it as "people who doing and participating in giveaways are overreacting too much beyond reasonable"; that is true - people are people... Probably there is no way to avoid facing it time from time. Already faced it by myself... But still there are some ways to reduce effect, such as making group giveaways and whitelist giveaways. For example I can't imagine that people in Playing Apreciated will overreact about something (like unworking key or long response time from the creator).
  • "Russian bot farm" - that is for sure an issue, I also was frustrated for a while by some of the winners. But, again, there are community made tools (like SGtools or some puzle services) that will cut out a fair share of such accounts + level restrictions also helps.

So yes, overall I think the community is helping to make this place a better place. Including in aspects you have listed.
