Hey everyone,

You most likely heard that Steam announced new privacy settings for profiles. The most noteworthy change is the addition of a new "game details" setting, which defaults to "friends only". This causes your game library and wishlist to be hidden from those outside of your friend list. To maintain the integrity of our site, we are going to require users to set this new setting to "public" in order for us to ensure users are activating games they win, and not entering to win games they already own.

This works similar to how we previously handled private profiles. Users will need to set this new setting to "public" when registering. After that, users can switch the setting back to "private" or "friends only". However, if they would like to enter giveaways, our site will ask them to switch the setting to "public" once a week to sync their data. If you choose to leave the setting as "public" all the time, then our site will automatically sync your data once a day.

Both the registration and account pages have been updated and revised for clarity. If you attempt to sync your account with incorrect privacy settings, you'll see a link to the new privacy options, and a screenshot showing how they should be configured.

Overall, I think the new privacy settings are a welcome change to Steam. The defaults cause a few annoyances, but I don't think they'll have a significant impact on our community.

Can't we become friends with sg (or some equivalent bot) and make everything simpler?

No. There is a limit to the number of friends you can have based on Steam level, so that trick will not work for a site of this size.

I'll never understand why someone would hide what games they play on a gaming platform (or consider it private and personal), but whatever, it doesn't really affect me much. "But gathering data!" - yes, the same data as everywhere else you shop. Seems it would be more useful to add an option to make your friends or groups private, since those are actual people.

At any rate, thanks for expediting the update.

Yup that just one of min reason and some user like making up there own rules out side Steamgifts then ban you for good reason or for lame reason they no who there are and as I say what come around goes around that Karma for you as pay back can be a *****.

Man, stop using "karma" as an excuse for vengeance. You know karma itself includes that you get what you wish for others - then why do you actively wish bad things in the name of it? o.O
Everyone has the choice and right to blacklist anyone. We deserve NOTHING on the site. Nothing is mandatory, every single fucking game you can win is an opportunity because someone decided that they want to give it to someone, and on a platform where you can also win it. Everything you can win is an extra compared to the nothing that you would get without the site.

adam1234 here just any example of old creator giveaway quote to why.
When did users start entering as many giveaways as possible, have hundreds of wins yet never actually play any of them and/or only idle the cards. So odd indeed.
Soon after that the winner also got a bunch ban that day.
And not counting some of the other lame reason I have personally seen around here
That not what Steamgifts is all about

Nope it not about an excuse for vengeance as I never ever black lists any one as that "karma" come back full circle on them haha by there own law makers after all it was EU GDPR rules that mandate it with Steam and that not count all other things that been happing late lee to.
Sure they have right blacklist anyone but not because I don't play everyday.

Entering someone's giveaways is a privilege, not a right, so people are free to blacklist for any reason they like. Karma has nothing to do with it.

Hey Tzaar you do know that privilege = peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor so you are so wrong maybe you need take time read Chapter 30 of Title 39 of the U.S. Code and not counting the many states also regulate.
You do know that Steamgifts is open to the Public and that any one has the right to enter so long as they have steam account for here, Unlike stuck up snobs who like blacklist people for no good reason what so ever who think he or she better then even one else unless.

Hey Tzaar do know that privilege = peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor

I know exactly what I said, and like I said, entering someone's giveaways is a privilege - a privilege granted you by both cg and the giveaway creator him/herself. A privilege that can be granted or removed at any time for any reason.

You do know that Steamgifts is open to the Public and that any one has the right to enter so long as they have steam account for here

SG is privately owned, operated, and funded by cg. You have no rights here (in regards to using the site itself or entering giveaways here), and can be banned at any time for any reason (or no reason at all). It's a privilege to use the site, not your "right."

Lastly, US Code Title 39 deals strictly with the US Postal Service, and isn't relevant here.

EDIT: TLDR Version: Rather than continuing to believe you have the "right" to enter giveaways, perhaps it would be wiser to appreciate the privilege others have afforded you by allowing you to enter theirs.

Don't matter if SG is privately owned or not.
Sorry it doesn't just apply to just US Postal Service also apply to all social media as well feel free to call any Lawyer or even Federal Trade Commission.

As for

EDIT: TLDR Version: Rather than continuing to believe you have the "right" to enter giveaways, perhaps it would be wiser to appreciate
the privilege others have afforded you by allowing you to enter theirs.

Technically speaking blocking some from enter with open contest is actually illegal under all falling Sweepstakes, Contests, Lotteries, & even Raffles unless you make a private invite only.

Don't get me wrong Blacklist is useful for those who spam you or are begging for game and few other reason like they cheat you on a trade which think is proper used of blacklisting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_39_of_the_United_States_Code

Title 39 of the United States Code outlines the role of United States Postal Service in the United States Code.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/39/part-IV/chapter-30

It quite literally only has to do with the US postal service and physical mail, and nothing to do with social media (or this site, unless cg is sending out pamphlets?). I'm assuming you've made a mistake somewhere and cited the wrong title.

OK, so back on topic (because the other comment has nothing to do with anything)

Submitted for your consideration: Perhaps if you begin to view entering someone's giveaways as a privilege rather than a right, you'd appreciate them more and whatever blacklists you may have accrued would seem less significant. Appreciate what you have over lamenting for what you have not.

Regardless of laws (especially since this is an international community, and laws may vary), I usually don't create giveaways "to award the few lucky ones that are good enough to have passed my standards" (unless I consider the prize to be above par, then I sometimes reward those who have contributed the most to this very community).

Sure, appreciation is great, but the whole point for me is feeling generous. I t feels to me as well that you're being a snob when you start cherry-picking who deserves your games, but that's my opinion. Of course, you can set up harsh criteria and that right is yours. I also think the pettiest "vengeance" is to ban people who maybe didn't enjoy the game enough, or didn't have the time/will to play, not saying those people will get bad karma (which is not vengeance, it's just believing that what goes around comes around). It's ok to have standards, but it's also ok to think some people's standards are going too far.

That's all well and good for robotically measuring simple metrics like game time and achievements fulfilled, but what if I want to behave indignantly if somebody doesn't meet my expectations about the level of satisfaction they actually feel when they accomplish those achievements, or how much they enjoy spending those hours playing the game?

SG does the same thing, listing your wins and gifts (purchases).
That's also accessible by anyone, and even lists who you won from or to whom you gifted.

I'm sure the creators of the GAs you win will be thrilled they can't check you for non-activated wins.

If they're THAT suspicious, they can always leave a quick message and ask to see?
I have no issues opening it for that or a daily sync ...
Heck, I'd probably even offer it from my side if I win since people are so suspicious. If that's not good enough for someone, then I don't know.
My main issue is not that people see what I play or whatever, it's all those weird sites that feature all kinds of stuff (wether it's steamlevel, achievements, etc), I never submitted myself to any of those, and after the privacy option 'only people signed in' or whatever it was got removed years ago, there wasn't any way of controling where you are featured besides making your profile private (which really shouldn't be forced anyway).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It has nothing to do with suspicious. It's something every giveaway creator should do and recommended by Support. If you ever checked some of your winners you'd be surprised how many scumbags there are here on SG.

But it's not really my problem. I'll just completely move away from public GAs (I used to do a lot of them) and exclusively give away games in Playing Appreciated or other groups that require their members to keep a public profile at all time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I only had one person who was terrible, he had a lot of fake giveaways.
Other than that, I've not really seen anyone do wrong, but I also don't spent time looking around here much, I love hidden object games, and they're given away often, that's why I'm here, the forums or big giveaways I've never really looked at, so I may be a bit naive and still think people are nice and honest. Hearing from you now, it's sad that people have to deal with so much scamming. I hope they at least make the sync mandatory daily. Perhaps it would be possible to add a 'last synced, status ok' or something similar to a person's profile here.
Either way, all the best to you, have a nice evening!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It doesn't really take a lot of time to check. Using the SGTools website and add Links to SGTools on Profile user script you can check your winners with 2 simple clicks. But maybe it's better not to know. Seeing some of the worst examples here on SteamGifts really kills the spirit of gifting.

Either way, all the best to you, have a nice evening!

To you as well.

Pretty bad implementation, grouping all together in one option, instead of having separate options for better control over what you want to hide.

I'd hate to see public giveaways die off here because of this. My plan is to put a notice in the description advising winners that delivery of their key will be delayed due to the ticket process unless they wish to make their profiles temporarily public. Their, choice of course. Hopefully this will cut down on the tickets a bit and make things easier all round. I think as time goes on, people will realize it's just less trouble to change back to public, especially since most already were before.

It's not just public giveaways-- it's also private giveaways / trains / etc. If I make a train of 300 games, lots of those users will have privacy enabled, and I'll have to contact support twice for each of these winners.

Unfortunately, that means SGTools or whitelist/group.

Would be nice to get a second function like "Send a message to the winner" beside "Send key" to let winners know they have won, or in this case that they have to change their settings....or whatever the content is then. A little comment field linked with the private message system should be enough.

I already have a winner in the list with blocked steam comments and library/games for a giveaway i did 5 days ago and ended today. I will not chase after anybody because the integrated mechanics are unflexible to handle new stuff. This is the task of the platforms and not of the individual users.

And from experience... some groups of people are often too stupid to read/do not care about, even they get a hint in front of their eyes. Unfortunately that is often the case

blame facebook and old people who don't understand technology.. Making a big deal because people don't understand how to use the internet.. watching Zuckerburg testify was like watching a kid explain to his 89 year old grandmom how to use her first smartphone.. They are totally and utterly oblivious to how things work.. The best part is, some of these people are actually the ones who thought up the idea of the NSA.. Which totally and utterly fleeced any and all privacy just because.. Yet Russian hackers stealing your likes on facebook was the straw that broke the camels back..

Government and governing cyberworld doesn't really go hand in hand. See the whole cookie thing in the EU, they thought they had to regulate the usage of cookies more, so now all sites have a 'accept our cookies' banner when first visiting them, but you cannot not accept it. So there isn't really much of a difference to the situation before.

Ok, so I changed the new setting to public...and I'm still getting weird results when I sync. It will say that I'm not logged in (I am), but then will still say that it's sync'd.

Also, I can't enter any GAs via SGTools now. It thinks that I have inactivated wins (I don't). Yes, I've re-sync'd on SGTools, too. No dice. It's just simply broken for me. 😪😤

BTW...anyone else wish that SGTools had error messages that are more specific? Ok, so you say I have a win that hasn't been activated. Which one? Some basic information like this would be valuable in trying to understand why something is failing, especially when you know that the results are incorrect.

but I don't think they'll have a significant impact on our community

was thinking about this, yesterday. and i think it will, cg, change something on our SG ...already changing.

i don't need games, i need keys. i enter giveaways cause a +1 is so great, no matter which game is. so this is a good change, to my (greedy) eyes. and i'm seeing people struggling to have me play those games i won.

so yesterday had this feeling that want to share: you can have all the keys you want, on SG, with no need to give something back to the community. you can not play a game, not only one and, still, adhering to SG rules.

in the case you may want someone play the games you're giving away... well... you'll find this an hard, incredible hard, thing to get.

i don't have idea on how to change that, i'm only feeling/seeing SG community as a powerful key-exchanging-platform, not a place for games and gamers.

my little sad two cents.
thanks for everything, cg!
