Did Steam patch the trading card farming method?

I can no longer change the steam_appid.txt to farm cards for games I don't have downloaded. Can someone else confirm this?

Before you could go into a games folder, and if it had a "steam_appid.txt" file you could open it and edit it to any game that you haves ID and save it. Then when you'd run the game, Steam would think you were playing the game with the ID you changed it to. It would only work on games you owned and it'd allow you to farm for the cards of the games you don't have downloaded yet. This came in handy for me since I have limited bandwidth (150GBs/month).

You open the game you want to supposedly hack the achievements, and Steam will think you're in the game
That's it...don't do anything else, minimise the window and farm cards ;)

Why did you use L4D2 instead of something small, with a launcher, like SPAZ? (so you can just leave the launcher running, without starting game)

How do you open a game in text mode? More importantly, what is text mode?

EDIT: Found it. Problem is you need to have the game to use text mode. If you read my post, and I don't mean that disrespectfully, you'd know I can't download all my games because of bandwidth restrictions.
