Victory Day parade: Moscow readies itself and turns up rhetoric - BBC News
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61338097

It is probably about 7:00 a.m. in Moscow right now.
There is a military parade scheduled for later in the day, and there are whispers that some sort of announcement or "action" is planned at the end of the parade.
(It will be over roughly at noon.)

How the facts turn out is often stranger than fiction in this world.
We won't know until the end.⏳👀
Presumably, in countries bordering Russia, they will have their eyes and ears on TV, radio, and the Internet at that hour in a safe place.

Speaking of which, it seems that the fires throughout Russia are not under control.
It would be wise to ceasefire and deal with them as soon as possible, but what will be the announcement? :(

in countries bordering Russia, they will have their eyes and ears on TV, radio, and the Internet at that hour in a safe place.

Our eyes will be only not on TV, but on what will happen on streets as well. We have "victory park" with "victory monument" in the capital city... which for our country is a symbol of occupation not victory. But Russians of course celebrate 9th of may on our streets and each year police have to get involved. It's like a cancer growth. Of course up to this point everyone has been content to an extent - as far as it's peaceful, celebrate it. Nothing against that. But some have already tried to create events that celebrate USSR and what Russia is doing now. I'm happy that regular people are standing up against this.

Fortunately this year any celebration of USSR occupation and any event at the monument has been cancelled. And we actually put up a memorial for Ukraine - https://www.lsm.lv/raksts/zinas/latvija/uzvaras-parka-izvieto-16-lielformata-fotografijas-ar-ukrainas-kara-ainam.a454948/ It's in Latvian but you can see in the video and scrolling down the pictures we have put up. And today we have labeled a remembrance day for victims in Ukraine. Police are patrolling and people are diligently trying to block any celebration by Russians.

I do hope that none will escalate but it's sick that one country and it's citizens can create such a ruckus and unease for everyone around the world. A friend of mine lives nearby the "victory monument" and is thinking of skipping going home this evening. What a wonderful feeling... Russia is bombing Ukraine, killing people and everyone else is sitting worrying "who will be next"...

An emergency has just been added.

Around 15:25 this hour.
A huge earthquake of M8 with a depth of 10 km has occurred in Taiwan.
This may cause Russia or China to do something. This is serious.

Japan News Bousai Network on Twitter: "Earthquake Early Warning Earthquake near Taiwan, strong tremors in Okinawa Please be alert for strong tremors. When I went to see the reports from the Taiwanese side, it was about M6.1.

It was larger than most earthquakes, but it did not seem to be serious.
Japan's Meteorological Agency has it listed at M8, but that will probably be corrected.
The emergency notification chilled my liver.
I am on the other side of the island, which is the furthest away from Taiwan, so no problem.

There may have been some damage, so I just hope there were no major accidents or injuries.

Btw. we have this human garbage apologies for my wording, but she truly is despised in our politics : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatjana_%C5%BDdanoka

She has been in favor on installing Russian language as official language in EU and has constantly supported Putin and any atrocities he has committed. She was also one of the rare ones who opposed EU sanctions and retaliations against Russia and its war with Ukraine. She is supposedly "anti war", that's why we she considers we shouldn't intervene. That's literally going by the Kremlins propaganda book. And she was representative of Latvia. So yeah, I'm standing by my wording.

Unfortunately I can't find the pictures, but once she was unsupported by any political fraction in EU she had to scram due to her support for Putin and once coming back to Latvia she actually organized an event for Russians and she set up several USSR flags (or maybe it was Latvian USSR flag, can't remember). Either way - bad. But a bunch of people got together with Ukraine flags and blocked the event. It failed (the Russian event), police dispersed everyone and that was the end of day.

And now someone has actually painted her house gate in colors of Ukraine flag ... https://www.delfi.lv/news/national/politics/zdanokas-majas-varti-parkrasoti-ukrainas-karoga-krasas-deputate-versas-policija.d?id=54268598
I know this kind of stuff is not cool and I agree regular people shouldn't vandalize other peoples property but I can't not laugh at this...... Either way - police wont start any criminal investigation into this

I agree with the fact that to vandalize property of someone just because you don't agree with their views can not be accepted.
But for acts, a painted gate is quite mild compared to what I have seen other politicians having to endure.

We have to defeat outspoken people like her with facts/ our words and condemnation.

Some take it over the top .. no doubt.
At the beginning of war I think there where even vandalized homes.. which is not good.

But with how opposed this women has been to anything relating to independency from USSR and anything following the times it is fascinating how such a person ever got to be representative of our country.. with how much she is hated... But Russian based political parties in our country usually receive "donations" from Russia.. We even had a total shithead for a mayor in capital city who was directly financed by Kremlin. Only old Russian ladies liked him. Everyone else despised the little rat. And he still got to be representative in EU for us....So maybe some vandalism will bring these propagators back to earth

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nils_U%C5%A1akovs - this is the little rat if anyone's wondering. Scroll down and there's some introduction in the controversy of him... should give the idea of what kind of Kremlins supported morons we receive here.

A new poll that just came out in Finland (poll by Yle) says that 76% of Finns now are in favor of Finland joining NATO. Only 12% are against. The longer the invasion of Ukraine has gone on, and the more atrocities the Russian forces have committed, the more Finns see the need for NATO membership.

Nobody expected this sort of great majority support for joining to happen any time in the foreseeable future - prior to the senseless war of conquest Putin engaged in, in Ukraine, a majority of Finns were for staying neutral. Putin can look in the mirror to find the person responsible for the coming expansion of NATO to Russia's northwestern border. Every threat he's made, every intimidation tactic he's used since to try and dissuade us, has done the exact opposite of what he's wanted.

May 12th Finland would make an announcement and Sweden already let out some noise they would request to join NATO together with Finland if it happens.

9th of May recap from Latvia :
Occupation monument was blocked for any celebration. Police and special forces where stationed there. Some came and put down flowers, but it was calm. Over night people started gathering, singing russian anthem along other russian war songs. The next day streets where filled with aggressive drunk russians. A lot where sleeping right there on the streets. City decided to clear the monument of flowers with a tractor. Of course russians tried to make a big deal out of this. Following two days russians came in hundreds to put down more flowers. They deny it was organized but of course there where known kremlins propagandists nearby and it was noted that there has been a van handing out flowers to the people. So yeah, that was your typical "event" by kremlin.

And of course yesterday russias propaganda channel (1TV) had a 15 minute propaganda piece showing these moments of people singing and putting down flowers as some kind of courage and sign that their special operation is winning along with their values. Basically same shit different day - they organize an event with either paid or brainwashed supporters, give out flags, flowers and whatever. And show it in their own twisted way. According to 1TV these where true Latvians and our youth. Of course it is absolute bullshit - people are hellbent on getting that occupation monument destroyed and even asking politicians to resign due to such incompetency of dealing with the situation as it happens each year and it was sure to get out of hand due to the war.

So before any propagandist comes here stating how they have support everywhere - be warned for the most part it's an absolute bullshit. They are just fed prefabricated and twisted news from around the world. People in Russia where of course having protests near Latvian and other country embassies due to this. Supposedly 1500 people gathered to protest against Latvia and how we supposedly oppressed poor Russians here and didn't let them celebrate "victory over nazism". Of course it all is connected to political parties. Basically big theater. I hope that regular Russians are not so blinded by this obvious kremlins propaganda. putin is ruining your country (and even if it's not putin but petrushev pushing his dirty political games to overthrow putin and put in one of his clowns, this is getting out of hand)

"Poor oppressed russians" can simply leave Latvia and come back to russia, if they don't like it there. Moreover, a lot of them didn't even learn the language, despite living in Latvia for a long time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup. Agree with you one hundred percent. But of course they don't want to move anywhere. They want to live in western world, but mentally can't leave the glorious Russia that was. Most of them haven't even visited Russia, but they are hellbent on being against the country they live in. And I partly blame the fact people are too tolerant for this. We have political parties and politicians (of whom I already have posted two in my previous comment) who openly preach against sovereignty and independence from Russia. Who constantly play the card of Russians being oppressed. And what do others do ? Nothing. If we wouldn't be in NATO and EU we would have already had some bogus military operation launched against us (Baltics in general)

I recently moved to capital city myself. It baffles me how many people look at me with wide eyes after saying I don't understand Russian. People can't even say basic phrases. There are even Latvians who have approached me and started talking in Russian on street and only after switched to perfect Latvian....... I personally have nothing against talking with people in Russian. I understand it to an extent and I am studying it as well. But in principle I wont talk with people living here in any other language then my native one. I don't even have problems with Russians talking in Russian with each other of course. But unless your a tourist - learn the fucking language.

I work a lot with foreign people myself. From Azerbaijan, Turkey, India, China.. Most Europe. I've seen people pick up Latvian in matter of a year or two.. Some have been even born here and can't say please in Latvian.

Off topic a bit - I visited Denmark some years ago. Everyone was extremely friendly there. Even homeless. When I flew back in, before leaving the city went into petrol station to get coffee. I was backing up in an aisle, accidently bumped into a women. Said sorry.. she just looked at me said "pashol nahuj" and stormed away............. Seriously ? How can you not form a negative opinion on a nation when you constantly meet people like this.. I know I know not everyone is like that, but I wont never forget that

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Learning the language of the country you're staying in is a basic courtesy, imo. At least some super general words like "hello, good bye, how much, sorry, please, and thank you" - this goes a long way to show people you CARE about their culture. I try to learn at least those basic words whenever I'm traveling or working abroad, and people do seem so much more eager to interact when they hear their own language, even rudimentary and with horrible "soviet" accent.
People refusing to learn the local language, while living in a country for a prolonged period of time simply show disrespect for the local culture in general. It's okay to despise them for that :D

As for rude tourists - there's always assholes, in every country. Though of course it sours the view on a whole nation when you meet such people, we need to keep in mind that vocal minorities are (usually) not representative of the general population.

Think what you want. I wont say I despise such people, but the fact we want to demolish the occupation monument and most of the country would love to see these supporters leave for Russia for good says all there is needed to be said.

Russian people and their views are not being oppressed here. These are minorities that openly express disregard for our countries sovereignty and our national values. You can bring up propaganda materials as much as you like. You can try to paint us as nazis as much as you like. Those are all lies - we are not part of Russia just as much as Ukraine has never been and we do not bode ill for Russia or Russians. Leave us and our culture alone. I am glad we are part of NATO and EU and I hope it will go through well for Scandinavia and Ukraine as well.

Yes, I despise people who live if a foreign country and refuse to learn even a tiny bit of local language. Such people show disrespect to the language, and , as a consequence, to the culture, and native people as well.
It doesn't matter which nationality such people are, I will readily condemn ukrainians too, if they refuse to learn a new language. Though as the record shows, ukrainians usually try to blend into new environments, and speak local language.

Granted, it was not the subtlest ways to deal with the problem, but you do realize that these "views" you are trying to defend here are of celebrating an occupation of our country ? Of long years of being oppressed by fascist regime ? Within world war 2 soviet union was as horrible as nazi germany. Only reason you are being tolerated is because you helped to win against nazis. For Russia - ok, its victory for you. Celebrate it. In your country.

Celebrating it here is like spitting on our history and on people who have suffered from soviet army. Women got raped, people killed when soviets came here. It was destruction - we are not that old. Most of us still have relatives who first hand survived the atrocities of soviets. Don't play a victim here. The war with Ukraine only opened up the wounds for everyone. Old people are terrified of possibility of living through all of that again. We were content with it - as you said.. let the flowers wither. But this war and total disregard towards what is being done has switched the attitude.

Difference - if you lose the Ukraine war the whole world will see for who Russian army truly is. Not your version of it.

PS. to be totally honest - denying what soviets did should hold the same punishment as denying holocaust.

Because we had such a freedom of history and culture while being under the soviet union until 1991... Truly the age of wisdom and ability to document our history of wrongdoings by our overlords.

https://gulag.online/articles/soviet-repression-and-deportations-in-the-baltic-states?locale=en - there are btw pretty good data on what has soviet union done to baltics. As for your regular Russian army pastimes - murder and rape - no shortage of experiences and stories. But of course its all limited - you know, winners write the history and all that :)

Also there are holocaust deniers who were not born when it took place as well. I don't judge you for the crimes that were committed. I judge you on the fact you try to downplay them and say things like that didn't happen.

Don't see how else can this be understood in relation to what I said. I'm not scaring anyone with anything. It was soviets who did those things. And what soviets did is literally why celebration of 9th of May at occupation memorial is a spit on our history not other way around as you tried to portray.

Dont try to twist my words. What nazis did was horrible. And my discussion with Bazilus is solely about what soviets did. I only used holocaust as comparison and in no way I'm downplaying what they did (or their accomplices, be it Latvians or not). And what nazis did in no way connects or absolves of what soviets did after (or before). I do apologize if the comparison was a bit out of place as I understand that is not a light subject.

So as far as discussion goes - ok, fine. Good points - but don't say I'm uninterested in history if you want to take things out of context. "Liberation" was at best one evil changing to another for many countries.

so if she wasn't out to cause a scene... why does she have to come with a camera rolling and instead of passing the people on the outside, tries to force herself through them... I mean it's not like she couldn't see what's going on.

If it would be about honoring the fallen she would have passed the crowd and put her flowers down..... just sayin

5 or so years ago, there were massive political demonstrations here between 2 factions who were both riled up for months.
And I can guarantee you that if I was displaying signs/marks of supporting one group and walked among the other group I would have gotten some altercations with some people as well because tensions were strung tightly.

So I got the lay some blame with the woman. She could have assessed the situation a bit beforehand and come to the conclusion that maybe this exact moment it might be better not to go put down flowers because to be fair you can show respect to your fallen countrymen any day of the year. Another day and probably fewer boiling heads are present at that location. This shows consideration towards the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainians are protesting against the war and have a demonstration.
I give props to the first man for using his words against the woman's words.
Now although I understand that all these people are frustrated and angry. ( which is why I said that the flower woman should have had a bit more common sense)
I don't agree with any type of violence therefor I condemn the one woman who gives the flower woman an albeit little shove that makes her trip.
And most of all the Karen lady who is yelling with a megaphone right up to the ear of that woman and than starts a physical altercation with flower woman.

Now to you,
You use words like "injustice" to describe this. Are you insane??
How about the rapes, murdering, looting, destruction of livelihood and now the dealership owner and guard who get shot in the back as they just casually walk away minding their own business.
Here you have your real injustice.

"First, people who have chosen military service as their destiny realize what they signed up for. And in professional army simply won’t take any stupid scumbags and murderers there. If a soldier is stupid, how can he study, thinking and fight?"
Your words from before and this latest video as more evidence towards my point that in fact it is Bazilus who has a clouded vision and you still refuses to see the scumbags in Russia.

You use words like "injustice" to describe this. Are you insane??

Seems like that is a national sport for a lot of Russians. They provoke everyone left and right, but when someone does anything against it they go "oh no, thats injustice, oppression, russophobia". But considering that is literally what Kremlin does daily there is no surprise these people see injustice in everything. Only the Kremlin is the only true one in the world when you live by propaganda. And I mean, whenever something bad comes up about soviets or russia, its just our interpretation which incidentally is wrong. I wouldn't even be surprised if Bazilus along with others will just say that rape and murder in Ukraine are lies and just our wrong interpretation stemming from evil western propaganda. At this point its so easy to predict their way of thinking its eerie

This is also where a lot of problem stem from in Latvia in relation to my previous comments - the mentality is "we will be the grown up ones, no need to provoke russians". But what do russians do when it comes for our national holidays or 9th of may ? They wear Russian flags, provoke anyone around them. Even attack private property where there are LAtvian flags out .... And when anyone retaliates ? Injustice of course. They can do anything in their own minds... Bu then again - not really surprising when you live be Kremlins propaganda of how everyone is against you and you are the only right one.

PS. And looks like our government has found a way to legally take down the occupation monument. And what do Russians do ? Threaten everyone with war - how we are ungrateful and how we deserve to be occupied by russia. Its sickening to hear this shit.

Want to know what happened when there was a vote for having second official language as Russian ? There where vatniks walking outside of voting places and threatening people to vote in favor of it. You couldn't even walk out in the streets at night in fear of having someone like this come to you and ask "cigareti jesk?" and if you answer in anything but russian you get beaten up (they are cowardly pieces of shit as they only attack in groups)

It has gotten a lot safer now with increased police. But yes - the relations are strained. I know we are on two totally different view points here, but I just want to make sure I am not unconditionally just hating russians here. I work with very nice russian people as well and have some very nice family friends who live in russia. So of course I am not saying every russian is evil. But if I have to be afraid to leave Latvian flag in my car window, just to have my window smashed in the morning - something has to be done.

Whatever your condescending point is, Russians are not victim here. Imagine that - talking in your native language and hating anything related to the country you live in and get no shit for it. But I suppose if you preach for the occupation of Baltics, Scandinavia and Ukraine, then I am not that surprised.

I agree with your point.
There are a lot of good decent immigrants out there.
They assimilate, find work and help society.

But I also think that Europe ought to use a blacklist system that many Asian countries use.
When you get caught doing criminal things. Blacklist for 5 years from entering said country.

Permalink

And to finish off - I couldn't care less for those Latvians (or whichever country we talk about) who emigrate to other countries without learning the language and then celebrating our holidays there as well. Respect other countries, their culture and their languages. I am all for people going abroad to look for a better life. But don't sit in another country and realize you need to suddenly be nationalistic about a country you have yourself abandoned.

Culture mixing is a great thing as well - I love when I find out some kind of holiday a foreign friend shows me that they celebrate. And if I'm abroad and celebrating some national holiday of my own I keep it within the limits of place I stay. But common courtesy is really a dying characteristic these days unfortunately.

Depends on how you look at it - protects or oppresses. IMO this is the curse and blessing of democracy. You can't really arrest someone for just voicing an opinion. So you want to have second language as Russian ? Organize an event, voting and feel free to implement it if enough people support it.

As for attacking someone - its not like these people attack others when there is police nearby. Most of them already have criminal background and they just flee whenever cops are nearby. For the most part police wont even do anything if you are beaten..... What are they going to do ? Start a manhunt for someone who hit you ? ... As a side note - friend of mine had an aggressive neighbor who drank daily, fought with his wife over nights and threatened to stab my friend. What did police say ? They can't do anything against it. You get stabbed ? Well if you don't die we will try to look for the one who did it. So its not like our underpaid police are that keen on solving squabbles on streets.

Of course the situation is getting better and better. But the whole deal with 9th of May celebration was a huge change in attitude by the people themselves. That's why everyone is really hellbent on getting the monument torn down. People have themselves donated 150k for it to be taken down.

Back up here a bit.
What is your proposed solution here ? That the government oppresses a specific group of people ? Because it sure sounds like that. That's called fascism and that's maybe acceptable in Russia and basically destroyed all the arguments of evil UA nazi and how Russia is going there to liberate it.
But the civilized world doesn't act like that.

But once we start doing something similar to this idea, you start saying injustice and invade a country.
As for this situation - government is already doing as much as in a democratic country it can do. It has been officially decided that the occupation monument will be taken down. And anyone supporting the war or showing disrespect towards our country gets fined or arrested.

Apart from that Russians are free to move back to Russia and however much you would like to paint west as nazis, we do not forcibly deport people due to different views. And here is where the problem originates - Russians living here openly hate west, our government but are against moving back to Russia. That is hypocrisy if I have ever seen one, but I wouldn't preach for open oppression or deportation.... how ever much I would love to see all these trouble makers return to their paradise ...........

Not self contradictory. Not really. Fines and arrests are in order with any other public disturbances (let's say disrespecting the countries flag - that's fine up to 400 eur I think.. And I'm pretty sure similar rules are in place all around the world). I'm talking about rounding up a trouble group and deporting them... or physically assaulting them ... or detaining them just for voicing opposite opinion that goes against current political regime. That doesn't happen.

Yes, I have not been to Russia (I would love to visit though), but we don't have to look that far back into history for my point - anyone who called "special operation" as war gets jailed. People get beaten and dragged away for protesting. We don't fine or arrest or beat anyone who protests. If you cause public disturbance it doesn't really matter who you are... That's just simply against the law. As for people holding up signs near Kremlin and getting dragged away by police just for that ? .... I don't know what else but fascism that is.

2 people who used physical against the woman with flowers, which I dont condone and you would have known if you read carefully. But I understand people like you only can see the things that fit your narrative.
The rest of the people are using their words which I know is hard for you to understand but a freedom of all of us here in the free world.

Your words, you think the same.
So you can agree then that Russian army is not a professional army.
Made up of a lot of garbage humans in their rank.
And them being not professional also explains why Russia is losing this war hard.

A woman gets harrassed.... Bazilus... look at this injustice.

But lets try a different approach,... What did the crowd do in your opinion that was such an injustice?

"If they really happened"
Did you even search for the tweet that has been posted?

Where they edited out the actual shooting, I am sure with your skills you can find the unedited version yourself.

Of course it is under discussion,
The discussion is about injustice, which is what lots of Russians are doing to the wronged Ukraine at the moment.

Why you don't want to argue the point that Russia is not a professional army?
Ignore the things you can't address without conceding your position is it?
We can only conclude that you are pro Ukrainian genocide then and it will take you years before you will be able to reach that conclusion.

there wasn't anything calm in her approach, telling by the speed she was walking and her straight approach, knewing that she is seeking active confrontation
and as others stated, she could have passed the people on the outside, but she hadn't chosen so. Why? Because she was seeking confrontation and of course the crowd confronted her with their stance.
That's why demonstrations and their counterdemonstration are usually separated in my country and the police should have kept her from approaching the crowd and tell her to come back later

You believe that you see the world objectively and without bias.
Assume that others who do not share the same views as you must be irrational, or biased which is clear from how you responded to all others who posted here about flower girl.

Flower girl is so innocent
Crowd is just being crazy without any reason

Flower girl just has pure and honest intentions
Crowd has only got nefarious goals.

I stick with my opinion,
Flower girl should have had more common sense and just pick a different day with no fired up protesters. Wouldn't be a problem if she really had all pure and noble intentions.
The 2 protesters who I mentioned before are in the wrong for laying hands on flower girl.

To end, probably many Russians who wanted to visit the monument on that day made the logical decision, reasoning that their country ( Russia) is the aggressor and has wronged many people ( Ukrainians) and that no good will come from their presence at that time which would only instigate an already rightfully anged people.

And that you can't see this, says it all

Riight. So, lots of russian tv crews around, trying to capture the conflict as it happens. The girl is shoving everyone around, and finally someone shoves her back. She stomped on the people laying on the ground, and she also climbed the monument, which technically is a desecration (by your standards), and she started the tugging with the girl with the red hands. Wow, what a great video! How much did she suffer, without any reason for it!!!
