What could it be that my ps2 fat is lagging when playing games? Let's say in call of duty 3 when there is areas with a lot of fire, people, enviroment details and generally a lot of things going on at the same time FPS drops to like 15 some times. It's like a PC that couldn't handle system requirements. I have never heard of such thing-lagging ps2 games on ps2. PS2's games do not have system requirements for them to lag :/

Some games don't lag a bit. But some keep constantly dropping to 15 or lower fps in intense situations. Killzone is pretty much unplayble with 2 player split screen mode cause we are playing on 10-20 fps over here :/

Maybe it's because of the laser problems within it? i have already cleaned all of the dust and laser itself with alcohol.

That is not a problem I've come across before in my years of PS2 use. Laser problems will typically result in either the game failing to load, loading slowly, or failing to stream data if used constantly, like in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

I expect you don't have access to other systems?

No,i have only this particular ps2 fat which is actually runing with matrix infinity 1.99 chip and can run burned games.

Ah, a modified system. That made be the cause of the errors, I'm not really sure how a chip and burned media can effect long term use.

Swap Magic for PS2 slim pretty much overkilled the system in about 1 year of constant use. I had PS2 slim which my brother decided to buy, less than a year later he decided to do that on the system, and less than a year later again, it started having problems playing original games. Right now it's sitting on a shelf, probably dead. Tested it 2 years ago, it worked with some games such as FF X but at some point it stops reading stuff and i might have to reboot the system to get it back to normal.

So yeah, that shady stuff for consoles = big no from my own experience. Good thing it wasn't me buying the PS2.

PS2 might be on it's way out. Try opening it up and blowing out any dust.

I'm not sure how to help you, but it might help if you post did you have this kind of trouble before, did you change something in it, is it a newly bought ps2 or did you maybe not use it in a while so now you notice the problems?

i have had it for about 8 years. I have played first 2 years some but can't really remember noticing anything. So i haven't used it and it rotted for 6 years :D but i have still cleaned everything including laser. And not every game lags. One of most impressively looking games on ps2 "Black" don't lag a bit,nor does baldurs gate or burnout,or splinter cell. Some do ,some don't.

From "laggers" i can say that killzone does, full spectrum warrior, True crime new york city and cod 3. But all of them in some points, not constantly.

Sounds like your PS2 is overheating and therefore throttling the CPU/GPU in order to prevent the system from being damaged. Is the cooling fan at the back somehow polluted up with dust or hair?

If it is, carefully open your PS2 (look for videos on how to do it properly and make sure not to lose any screws), clean it and put it back together. If you don't want to open it up, make sure to completely prevent the fan from rotating (with a paper clip or something) and use either pressurized air or a vacuum cleaner to clean the cooling system.

This should result in lower temperatures and therefore prevent your PS2 from overheating and throttling. Let me know if it worked.

I think a laptop air cooling system might work better. But yeah a second fan might be a good idea aswell.

This wont help, as the air can't reach the components that need to be cooled. Just make sure that it's dust free on the inside, and that the PS2 can run in its specifications without overheating.

i have already cleaned all the dust since i have opened it to make cooling fan USB modification. That original fan slot does not work s o i use usb cable to feed power to it directly from ps2. However, the fan is still in it's original place, but using power from usb port. Can't be any difference with cooling.

One thing to note is that some PS2 games (especially Killzone) did have performance issues. Unless this worse performance only started recently for these games, it's likely an issue with the games themselves, not the console.

according to ign, true crime new york city does have some "lagging" issues however i can't say that to other games. And i have never had such lags with my slim when i had it 4 years ago with same games. Only this FAt.

Do you have Hard Drive for PS2? If yes then check if games from it will still be lagging. You can find on the internet how to play games from HDD. If there will be difference then for 100% culprit is laser.

There exist some games that lagging - bad ports, places in game that require more power from CPU etc.
I have PS2 90004 and I don't know why in GTA:VCS sometimes fps are going down. GTA: SA working fine. Almost every game except Sly 3 are working on my PS2 without any problem. In Sly 3 cutscenes are cutting like a crazy :(

Killzone working fine without any issue.

Would it work with USB?

Yes, but I'm not recommending playing by it. PS2 have usb 1.1 it's too slow to comfortable play. Especially in games with free roam

If you have a decent PC, then just dump your PS2's bios before it dies, and then you can play games in HD on your PC with pcsx2.

Can you use your CD drive for the PS2 CDs?

Better, you can make an ISO from your original CDs and play it via emulator without ruining the original disks. I've played several hours of FFX and runs purrrrfect. Wel... Not perfect, sometimes there is a bug when your team is fighting backwards, they give their back to the enemy and they have to flip and attack. With the limits they RUN ALL OVER THE MAP because don't know how to twist their ankles. ITS A LOL, but you can perfectly solve that problem in the options :P

Look, look, look!

that can be fixed in the settings (just search the forum for it)

Also PS2 didn't use CD, it used DVD.

Why not using Emulator + PS3 or PS2 or another controller?
