This!

The new trailer for the latest expansion for SW:TOR is an exceptionally well made piece of animation and storytelling. A nice continuation of the Sacrifice trailer from last year.

I haven't actually played the game, but reading up on the history of immortal Emperor Valkorion / Vitiate makes Palpatine look like a simplistic tool and about as dangerous as a newborn kitten.

Where's The Extended Universe?
The books were rich in depths the films never touched upon. :/

the extended universe is dead

Not that the last film wasn't nicely polished, but I'm going to go right on ahead enjoying the much better developed original storyline and characters, and consider it canon instead.. :X

Just 'cause Disney is ignoring it for the films, doesn't wink it out of existence- or in comic book terms, we've moved from the Earth 1 Universe to the Earth 2 Universe, now..

well i meant to say that they said that it is not canon

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, but that fact doesn't mean much in this context. Usually removing something from canon is a simple thing, like a side story or a single retconned event, and the main content remains the richer reference point than the removed side element. Here we're not talking simple canon substitution, but a fully developed alternative universe.

For example, even if Star Trek: Voyager/DS9/Enterprise/etc had all said The Next Generation wasn't canon, that doesn't prevent people from enjoying that universe as a self-contained series/story-line. And for as huge as TNG was, the extended universe is even more richly developed.
Or put a different way, it's like comparing the Marvel Cinematic Universe with one of the comic universes- both can exist simultaneously, and be appreciated differently, regardless of how different their storyline histories turn out.

Currently, we've got one film in the Disney Universe, which makes it pretty meaningless in comparison to the established universe, regardless of what's current canon or not.
Rather, it's like having a new video game console with only one game, versus the previous generation console with a fully developed library of games, many of which are true gems. You can appreciate both, but that old system is certainly going to give you more to work with until the new system gets some more games under its belt.
And in line with that metaphor, I'll play the games of the new system as I come across them, but for now the system has yet to release anything to compare with the better games of the last generation, so my attention and favor will remain with the old system.

Spoiler: the big twist in the original series is that Vader is Luke's father. After Empire Strikes Back, episodes II and III then function as an extended flashback to show how Anakin was corrupted to the dark side. The reveal that Leia is Luke's sister isn't particularly exciting in Return of the Jedi, and actually works much better when Amidala has twins at the end of Episode III. Episode II's Anakin parallels Episode IV's Luke quite nicely, as well

We do lose Episode I, but the movie doesn't add anything to the story, the plot/sub-plots are unrelated to later movies and somewhat confusing, and most major characters are killed off.... or made redundant. also, no Midiclorians, or a very inappropriate age gap between the love interests; it also means Anakin starts out as a moody brat, rather than the angelic kid he is in Episode I.
We do lose out on pod racing, but that's just an action scene, and there are a lot of plot issues related to it that are best left off anyway

Note that Episode I can always be watched as a companion piece, just as the two ewok movies are companion pieces, for if you really can't get enough

thank you, but i read that really large article i linked on it a cple hours ago ;)

but that's a great shorter version with the largest points for anyone else who wants to read it ^ but not have to read that massive article i linked.

edit: and yeah, i didnt care for episode 1 really besides the pod racing. so it along with the rogue one coming out, and the ewoks like you said, perfect as companion pieces.

Episode I has my favorite lightsaber battle in the series though ; ;

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

IMO the action parts of Episode 1 are some of the best in the whole series. The lightsaber battle at the end and the pod racing are definitely great. But the story itself...... Let's just say it might as well have been directed by Michael Bay.
It's nice to watch as a companion piece, but not as an integral part of the star wars story.

With or without the Despecialized Edition?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I still have the original movies on VHS and I'd stuck with them due to being unhappy with the special editions and hearing about all the problems with the DVD original versions.

I'd heard about the Machete Order and it made perfect sense to me, but I'd never read the original article or heard about the Despecialized Edition until now. That is something I'm going to have to look into!

Oh well, any excuse to post some of my Star Wars fan art...

There's an "unenhanced" edition project somewhere focused on taking out all the BS Lucas added with the constant reissues. Can't remember what it's called though.

The new special effects are fine, and a lot of the changes are ok or irrelevant. I don't mind the celebrations and ghosts but I can understand why someone would want to erase. But unless I'm forgetting something the only egregious change is that Han should have shot first

I like the story of the originals more, but I prefer the prequel's world because it has politics and intricate to it. I'm really curious about how the upcoming movies will fare, the 7th was really up for my likings.
( Read a book or two from the expanded universe, I'm a sucker when it comes to lore - I would gladly take originals or prequel, just give me a great story from that era ^_ ^ )

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Jar fucking Jar Binks ruined Episode 1 to damnation. The politics I actually found to be pretty boring tbh, lots of useless committee discussions and meetings. It would have been intricate had the Darth Sidious reveal not been so totally obvious. from the start, and I was disappointed with how they handled Darth Maul. It had some cringeworthy dialogue too (remember Anakin's 'sand' monologue?)

But that's just my opinion! :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I thought the discussion was about the eras? So many people discuss the movies.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Didn't notice that. Thanks for the head-up!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I absolutely agree. But if you look it from further, Sidious' plan was to manipulate the trading federation into war for economical independence(?) , to attack the queen in a really immoral way so they are treated as aggressors, and thenthe republic is so desperate that they take the "accidental" army of clones they found. And then it happened what it happened at order 66. I mean, he basically planted an ARMY of inside-men into the republic :o
Mizeri mentioned that we're talking about eras - I was, too. Having diplomacy at all in ep 1-2-3 makes it way more interesting than the hurr durr empire-era of 4-5-6, which was much more binary, without interaction between factions (The simpler, earlier times in movie making ^^ )
But again, I fully agree with you in terms of the movies itself. First one had a nice-looking battle on Naboo, second one had really nice story and I loved Obi-Wan in it (Anakin was terrible, both as a personality and on level of script.Sand discussion. Yes.) but I really liked the 3rd one, did a good at linking the trilogies and finally making a movie that overall got close to the fun I had with the originals.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, sheesh that was my bad though, I didn't notice the era part xD And yes, in terms of the era I actually do appreciate the prequel time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hm. Have you read the theory that Jar Jar Binks was the actual Sith Overlord? But then this major plot-twist had to be completely changed because fans have been hating all over the place? There is a really long article about it somewhere and it sounds partially plausible. An interesting thought that an intriguing script had to be destroyed because people could not stop raging ^^

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did, as a matter of fact. But it would have been wayy too out of character, even for Star Wars. There was this meme of Episode VII which showed that Kylo Ren is actually Jar Jar Binks, holding Vader's burnt helmet, saying "meesa avenge you Ani" xD

I usually won't let my prejudice prevent me from enjoying things I hold dear, but god damn was jar jar a fucking abomination to the Star Wars franchise. It's like he kept becoming exponentially annoying per second of screen time. Still, I'll say that this is a better reveal than Darth Sidious' any day.
