I do this with my old potato laptop, mostly for traveling reasons. And because of this I don't play those games on my desktop, even though I haven't traveled much since the pandemic started. Maybe I could act differently if the laptop could've run wide-range of games, not so sure. Besides this, there are also a couple of games I don't finish immediately so I can play them when I really crave a certain genre, and I know when it's time. Also, when it arrives Steam Deck might cause new habits on people, like keeping some games only on Deck.

Just wondering if you have some similar habits.

Do you tend to save some games for certain occasions?

View Results
Yes, I do. Every game has its own time and place.
Yes, but only for a bunch of games.
Yes, but only when I have to do it. (Travelling, potato gaming etc.)
Maybe I do but never thought about it.
No, but it might not be a bad idea.
No, I play my games no matter whenever or wherever.
No, I only play 2 games I always play while my backlog looking at me with tearful eyes (And I keep buying games.)

i do, i have a bunch of game i keep for playing with friends, some games i keep depending of my mood, , and some i keep for specific occasion (like internet problem)

That's actually kinda well-planned. I also do keep some offline games around for the same reason. I guess that alone fits this profile very well.

TBH all the games in my library are like that to a degree. While my backlog is longer by the month, I aim to hoard titles I'd very likely be interested in anyway, its only a matter of time. There are times when I'd love to experience an immersive sim kind of game, other times a heavily story-oriented crpg, or horror titles mainly but not exclusively at Halloween, and so on.

Human life-span is too short to handle backlog yet it keeps getting bigger since no one can resist GabeN's nice discounts. :)
Personally I stopped buying some games even if it goes -75%, but I still couldn't resist when something on my wishlist goes -90%, even though I know I won't be able play it some time soon.

Yeah, its hard to resist the urge when another "historical low" hits the steam market. XD
The thing is, I am quite picky with games, so after about two years of diffferent bundles, I have decided to buy only the individual titles that are comparatively high priority. But even so my list grows at an alarmign rate. :D

And most of the times following the gaming fashion from 5 years behind would be enough for those historical lows. And you would still have a huge backlog just by doing this. :D

Hmmm...I think I need a category for "I tried to do so, but somehow managed to fail anyway." I tried to save a game specifically for a trip I was taking where I knew I'd only be able to bring my work laptop and would be stuck in a hotel for long stretches of time with nothing to do. The computer ran the game just fine, but I hadn't brought any peripherals because I was traveling light and therefore was stuck trying to play with just the touchpad. That was my last attempt to intentionally reserve playing a game for later =D

Generally, I just play games when the mood strikes me. The only real exception are games that I am gifted (whether it be winning it on a site like SG or being given it by an irl friend/family member), because not prioritizing those games feels really rude. Oh, and occasionally I'll play horror games in October but that's less to do with planning and more to do with all the streamers suddenly playing a bunch of horror games and reminding me that I have some in my library that I always meant to play but hadn't gotten around to yet.

Maybe you could go with some turn-based games next time, even if you forget your mouse you would be fine. :)

Ah, gifted games could generate some pressure, I know that feel. It may feel rude but it's actually not.

Absolutely. The more immersive games, open story focused games, are in the fridge for when I can reserve at least two hours of tranquility (very rare).

And then there are the grand strategy games, frozen for when I send the kid to Erasmus (maybe I'll need to divorce too lol).

But the potato-ery of the device is not much of an inconvinient. As long as it's playable, I can do with minimum settings.

If the game is long I also have some reservations because I know it will keep me some time when I start it, bad part of this it might turn into a loop where I can't start the game if the process takes longer, mostly psychological but still.

Well, if you're playing something like Europa Universalis IV just get retired I guess, even divorce won't cut it. :D

Potato gaming could be nice actually, at least for retro or retro-styled games, since they don't even have graphical settings most of the time. But if you're stuck to it, it might not be fun as you expected.

By the way, apparently you were in my blacklist for some reason I can't tell, there are currently 5 people on my BL and I know why I added them but not you. So feel free to join the giveaway if you want.

Ah, didn't realize that, I just liked the question. Thanks!

I'm used to potato and retro gaming. I extensively use phone and tablet to play DosBox games with MagicDosBox, VNs and RPGMaker games with JoyPlay. And sometimes regular games are playable with SteamLink/NoMachine on the go. Most times it sucks for the controls, so when one works I celebrate and don't care for the lower graphic quality.

No problem.

I only tried Heroes 3 on my phone at some time, there was an app for it but cannot remember the name right now. It was pretty good actually. I haven't play games on my phone other than that and it's been a very long time. Though I played some on the tablet time to time. I even tried to play ETS2 with Steam Link, just for the laughs. :)

If you like to play old games on emulator, you should check RetroArch, it also has a mobile app, well at least for Android, don't know about iOS. It's definitely the best from what I tried, quite an all-in-one solution.

Sometimes, I want to finish a story driven game like Life is Strange in one or two sittings. In those cases, I reserve some time with snacks and drinks to play it in one binge or maybe in two full days. I work in shifts, so I have enough free days when my friends are busy.

So it's a mix of reserving and planning. It makes perfect sense since you work in shifts, in the end everyone makes their own rules. Gonna admit the first Life is Strange game was very captivating, exactly a game can be played with snacks.

I do this for various reasons and then end up forgetting about actually playing those games. I'm currently getting around to play games that can run in the absolute potato that is a decade old netbook, because it's the only PC I currently have available, my desktop one being out of reach maybe until I move again due to lack of space to set it up.

When CJs hb event started, I decided to make a list and save all my hb games but other then that I don't normally save games. Even with those I don't really take part anymore so its more of I'll avoid them but I'm not gonna stop myself from playing them just so I have an extra game

I guess keeping some games for events is a habit, or becomes a habit after a certain time. Not sure about subconscious part but it seems you still willingly keep at least some of them for an "in case of" situation which I can sympathies with.

Oh I did keep my list incase I take part in the future but I'm not gonna purposely avoid them. Like for play or pay I ended up with vampyr, at the time I mightve avoided that because that's 1 hb game down the drain but its fine. Plus its a long one so in the end I most likely wouldn't choose to play that. Thanks to mafia though I can just replace it, which only just came to me now. I should update my list

I assume it's definitive edition. Somehow classic and definitive version have different HLTB times. I guess gameplay is kinda faster now.
If Humble goes like this it won't create a huge backlog like it used to do. Don't know about Monthly event but I can sense those might be related.

Yeah, I still have a bunch tucked away in case there's a game I really want to try and win, especially since I'm not subscribed to choice anymore. I don't really feel right playing games that would qualify for that when I'm not trying to complete it, but sometimes I still do because I give up waiting. ;P

Yeah just that, especially when it comes to long ones because even if I like the game trying to complete 6 super long games wouldn't work. Others might say just don't complete it but I don't wanna finish the game and return to it afterwards now its no longer fresh in my mind

Smaller games may as well stay hidden for now, based on what I got there's nothing super amazing I'm missing out on and I got hundreds of other games so its only that hb tag that makes those games stand out

Maybe not necessarily a "special" occasion, but some games like Stardew Valley I just barely play if I am not playing with my friends (I know, weird). It kinda just felt a bit overwhelming to play that game solo to be completely honest haha, it is much better when you can grab a few friends and let some do the farming, some go fishing, and others go mining etc.
There are also other games (singleplayer) where I would only really play if I am sharing it to my friends, mainly because the game just has amazing gameplay/plot that I don't want them to miss out--I'd feel a bit guilty if I played through the game without showing it to my friends lol.

that is why i have red dead redemption2, occupying119 gbs, just because someone spoiled me what happens to arthur.. and i am not mentally or emotionally equipped to deal with that ending. so the game will be sitting there, it has been since june of 2021 i don't play it, just because i don't want it to end.

i also have the eternal cylinder too. i love that game, but everytime i love a game too much i just don't play it,
i dunno what i am saving it for, but i am saving it for something

Your situation seems like mood related, someone also mentioned that here. I don't know about RDR2's story but even you cannot choose what will happen I think you should go and finish your first play-thorough if you ask me. Not just that it consumes 119 GB space :), but maybe you would go for a NG+ or a start over. That happened me with Witcher 3 and I played it 3 times. Some games have this effect.

But keeping something you love as long as you can is just humane. Just don't forget to taste it time to time. :)

oh my situation is 100% mood related, i have severe depression, and i developed just too much affection for arthur. (not to mention he looks like my bf) and i have incredible troubles letting things go
(i had a quite bad breakdown when i played trough journey with my bf, adorable critters the journey wizard things but it's just soul crushing when you think of what it all means)

when i was young i was capable of beating the same game several times a day (soul reaver, i think i reached to beat it 2-4 times per day) but now that i grew older i noticed how hard everything is when it remotely touches any kind of feeling

yes i really should finish RDR2, i just, dont think i can stand it, nothing will be the same even in the epilogue, (and playing trough levels/missions of any story driven game has become such a drag to me.. think about climbing high hrotgar over and over and over... it's just soooooooooo energy draining X3 )
my aim for rdr2 was always to get 100%, but i left it SO close to the ending that i am just dreading to finish it, you feel the ending and the time pressing down on you and the story and at this point i have doubts if i have time to try and finish all the side missions with arthur anymore

this comment got too long

Nah it's okay, I'm here to read. :3

Well, state of health is a priority so keeping games for the times when you're in a good mood is wise I guess. Though he's being a look-a-like of your BF didn't make the situation better. :)

Young minds are naive so it's only natural the things change when you get older. Somehow I remember Legacy of Kain games as longer but I guess they were not that long (~10 hours), so that's actually impressive. I could never speedrun those games, I generally take things slow.

Maybe when you decide to finish the game you can try to do it while your BF is with you, some consorting could be nice. When I finish Witcher 3, it hit me hard because it was a nice game that I had deep connections with it, however those emotions fade away with time. I guess I can say the same thing for Starcraft 2's ending as well. Btw best way to climbing to High Hrothgar could be attending to Skyrim Space Program by a common giant. :D

Best wishes with the life, hope you come through depression sooner than you thought.

i love the space program idea X33 i might try it next time i decide to re re re re re re do skyrim X333!

it might be a good idea to try and ask him to be with me, but at the same time is not very ladylike of me to cry like a baby for the ending of a game, so even if we have been together for almost all our lives.. is still quite shameful to let him see me cry X3

i swear i love legacy of kain, the controls have not aged well in soul reaver for sure (he was also kinda my childhood crush XD) but it reached a point where i knew all the most effective and fast ways to beat all the bosses and everything so i spent the whole day playing it over and over and i loved it every time!
to keep in mind, i only had soul reaver and Machines:wired for war to play with when i had that age. you know internet was kinda rare and dial up was just starting so i had a very limited library of games to play, like Empire Earth.
man i dunno but i just like to talk to you for some reason, and i am honestly not a normally talkative person X3
EDIT: i still have to give withcher 3 a real try, i have started it twice but only reach until the first town and then for some reason just drop it
just like with yakuza 0 , it is one of the games i truly have to give them an actual try

i wish you the best too <3

Have no idea about your relationship or culture so ignore just anything comes from me but since you know each other for so long it wouldn't be shameful if you ask me. :)

Controls didn't age well indeed. Even some PS2 era games giving me hard times some time. Well, it's only logical if you play a so much you become a master of it. My sister was a Mario speedrunner for example. :D

You sound like an introvert (me too though) but guess we do writing better than talking.

You're talking about White Orchard. It's a small area, mostly for tutorial reasons so you don't have to stay there, just start to explore the world and you can always go back there. If you see an enemy higher level than you, just run away etc. Once you get used it you'll most likely love it I think.

And thanks. <3

im definitely an introvert, it is honestly rare i get to talk for more than 1 comment with a stranger on the internet X3

i always thought the combat on the witcher3 is too hard really, i think i rather focus on seeing cool stuff, and also i didn't understood gwent, just the idea of having to do the tutorial again(because if i dont do it i will instantly die in any combat) it already feels like such a drag ;w;

i think the most i reached to see was a bear and it mauled me, it was near a statue i believe, i was looking at it and then suddenly bear and mauling, and that was the last time i played it X3

Well, at least you know yourself. :D

To be fair, not every game is for everyone. When I play Witcher 1 for the first time, I couldn't even kill the first ghoul in a cave because of the weird combat system which is needed for the story. I dropped the game for a long time. Later I tried again and finally got used to it. There are a lot of games with overwhelmingly positive rating I marked as ignored, so I understand.

For Gwent, yeah it may take some time to learn, it's different from other popular card games. And I still like it more than the standalone Gwent game. :)

For some game, yes.

If a game has a specific holiday theme - like Valentine Panic, Sweet Halloween or Christmas Tale - I do make an effort to play them on or near their respective holiday time.
I also tend to play more horror games near Halloween, more romance VN's near Valentine's day. etc.

When I first got Armello, I played it so much - both single player alone and multiplayer with pals. I still love the game, but I have a lot of backlog I want to catch up on. Now I mostly reserve Armello for playing together with friends. I guess you could say it's become a "better with friends" game for me.

I could imagine just using Steam Deck for a bunch of my games, there's quite a few that I just stream to my phone, never actually on the computer, haha. And there's some I've wanted to play for a while, but after finally buying them I'm kinda scared to start because I don't know if it'll be as fun as I've hoped or if I'll just lose interest in it too quick and then just be like "Well now what?" I don't really know if that makes sense to anyone, it doesn't really make sense to me, but whatever, haha.

Also edited since it looks like some people have a kind of similar thing, so I guess it's not too far out there?

I guess at least you can try one mission / play for a while to see if you like it or not. I usually don't play the games i bought immediately too but sometimes I wish I played them right away (because of the 14 days rule of refund), why keep it if I don't like it right? Losing interest after 2 hours is kinda bad luck though. Happened to me with Hammerwatch, played it 3 hours and lost interest. Well, sometimes it happens. Usually you understand before it reaches 2 hours. :)

Not sure if that counts in regards to the question ^^ but I save most games for when they are actually finished. Like, if I'm pretty sure there are more DLCs coming, I wait until they're out.
I hate that feeling of having missed out on contents but I can't stand restarting a game long-completed just to see some new extra stuff.

That's a fair point, for example waiting for Witcher 3 expansions is wise because they add so much to the main game. However nowadays there are many games that have jibber jabber DLCs and basically they're worthless, both price-wise and time-wise. Main game could be nice but for some games it isn't really necessary to wait for a complete pack.

Also, good luck with Paradox games. :)

But all this pickiness gets in the way sometimes

Well, if you're loyal to your plan that might be a problem sometimes. I still keep some of my games that I could start any day for probable dark days.

And yes, completely agree with the cozy time gameplay is the best.

I currently only have a potato at my disposal so basically everything in my backlog is saved for the occasion that I can get a somewhat decent, gaming-able PC, lol. But somehow this doesn't stop me from still buying bundles and stuff. I'm still very much interested in 90ish% percent of games I own, as in, I wanna finish them all, but the backlog keeps growing until I'm actually able to, lol. Send help.

(But generally speaking, for the steam stuff I have installed at any given time, I have 3 categories: games with dailies that I try to pop on once a day, games I'm actively working on to clear my backlog, and games that are fun to hop on in any time, regardless of whether I already finished them or not. Most of my games are single player games so usually, having crappy or no internet available is at least not to my detriment.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, I kinda do something similar as well. I use favorites for the games I install on my every setup (OS reinstall cycle).

I slowed down my backlog growing speed yet I still cannot match the speed, though that's mostly because I like to buy games with replay value, RTS, city building, management kinda genres.

Potato gaming is tough but you may learn about some hidden gems, though depends on how potato your PC is. :)

I've always been more of a console gal than a PC gal because of stuff like this, but I really really really wanna get into it. Of course, actually trying to put together a build is currently a struggle, with parts shortage and people even pilfering the pre-builds to slaughter them for parts @_@

Yeah, building a PC from scratch is tough nowadays, mostly thanks to crypto-bois. If you don't care about playing newest games usually mid-range builds should do the job, and with luck perhaps you could even find an un-slaughtered decent pre-build. :)

Well, it seems you need more than mid range. Though don't know about current prices much but ~$1000 build should do fine. Modding part might change the equation, the price can go up according how deeply you want to mod. :D
