"Waiting for a sale" "Waiting for it to get bundled"

I hear this all the time, people even say this when they're talking about a game they actually want to play. It's especially annoying when they're talking about a small indie game with a price tag of $9.99. We're spoiled.

Getting a bargain? It's great! Intentionally looking for an amazing game to lose its value? Wrong on so many levels!

Don't they realize that this sort of thinking simply kills the video game industry? (especially the indies), "getting bundled" is already a huge devaluation to a game.

I think we shouldn't be cheap-ass for a game we like, in most countries people can easily afford to cough up the full price for a great game, instead of waiting to pay $1 for it with tens of other games they won't play anyway.

I think this is selfish thinking and we're just killing the industry, and harm the developers we like. I too bought many bundles to pick up some old title, or a semi-decent game but I also pay full price for the games I really like just to show my appreciation to the developers.

If we'd buy only the games we want, and for their real price we wouldn't have a giant pile of shame (I'm talking about the backlog) and the developers wouldn't have a problem putting out new games. Most indie games are reasonably priced anyway.

Let's think a bit less about ourselves and think a bit about others, the developers.

Also don't tell me that (literally) everybody is too poor to buy a game at full price. This rant is not about people who don't have the money.

-- RANT --

UPDATE: After reading the responses. I must agree with people who said that this way of thinking is also the fault of the Devs, Bundlers and the Industry in general who are following these business practices. It's not entirely the consumer's fault that we've come to this, I'd say it's 50-50.

I do realize yes, however most of the people who think this way can actually afford to buy games at full price. If you are too poor to buy a game, you're probably too poor to buy a gaming PC too (speaking of third world countries).

A computer has become neccessity... Although, gaming computers aren't, but sometimes you go a little extra to buy something, It's an one time investment which lasts for many years (unless you walways want to play with ULTRA graphics)... Doesn't mean you can pay (full price) for all the games that you like. clearly, these games will end up costing more than the trouble you went to and paid for the (gaming) computer.

since when do you need a gaming pc for games? for aaas ok, but there's a lot more games you can play on even 10+ years old computers.
Or maybe someone has saved up money for a pc. that doesn't mean he will now save money for each game, since gaming is just one part of computer usage. If it's your main goal to play games, you have addiction, mate :D
If you haven't noticed, there's a lot of users on this site who's just here to win something to play.

sometimes we dont need a gaming pc to play a indie game

i think if we dont have deals that person will just take a free copy in piratebay instead of buying a singleplayer game

E.G.: i had played batman: asylum and liked so much that i bought batman:City, but i only bought it on a sale, because i dont have money to buy singleplayer games, the ones i have was on bundles

So even if is little money for the developer i think is better than no money

SO what? They can do whatever they want to. If they don't feel like buying the sodding thing for the full price then its absolutely OK.

You should rather blame the devs for not delivering a game thats even remotely worth the full price tag.

I can buy game that I like for full price if only I had some method of payment to use here

your outlook is flawed, a good budget for low income people always has about 15-20% for entertainment otherwise the budget wont work. if you say your too poor don't spend money on entertainment, the budget wont work because it will be broken. now if your so poor that you end up spending the money you spend on food, well, then you broke the budget, IMO Tsukiruka sounds like he is possibly referring to following budget, something that should be applauded not scorned like you are doing, and like many others always do when this type of conversation comes up. so respectfully shut up when it comes to that kind of comment.

Nobody forces you to play games in the first place. What you do with your money and "budget" is none of my damn business I give you that. However I still think that you should still support the games you LOVE and pay full price for them (for your own good).

I too keep a strict budget but when I have let's say 10% to spend on games I buy 2 games I know I'll love to play for full price instead of buying 200 bundle junk for -99% that I will never even open.

However you told me to "respectfully" (I don't know how is that respectful) "shut up" so you're obviously not interested in my opinion.

It's nice of you to buy 2 full priced games instead of bundles.
I wouldn't do that though.. sure, I bought bundles.. but not just because "OMG! CHEAP GAMES!".. I bought them because 1 (or more) games in the bundle interested me, the rest were activated because.. well.. doesn't hurt to try. Now when I think back, I feel I shouldn't have activated those games and should have just made giveaways here or something.. Out of the 200+ (don't remember exact number, too lazy to check) games that I have.. there are at least 50 games that I am sure I will never play, most of them I have tried (not all though)... I don't know why I am even talking about this XD

What I wanted to say was... if I had the money (yes, if I had it.. all the time I bought games were when I had low budget.. before that I never earned money.. and I am not earning now.. so zero budget).. and I was 100% sure that I would love the game (this is very rare for me, I don't know about others though.. Till now, There has only been one game that I was sure to love.. it wasn't even available in my country XD) I'd probably buy too..

Also, I don't feel like paying (much) for digital copies of games.. doesn't feel like I own the game ._.

I wait for sales. Not because I "can't afford", but because I think that overpaying for something just to play it earlier isn't that much of an advantage, at least for me.

The prices will eventually drop, not only because of sales but also because the price drops naturally, so if you're not eager to play, it's wise to end up paying less for it.

I don't mind paying full price for indie games and such, when I want to help the developers, knowing how hard it is. But I'll never buy a full priced AAA title ever again, since there'll be plenty of people that's gonna fill their pockets in no time anyway.

That's a valid point, AAA titles get their profit regardless (even if they're bad games). I don't see AAA games bundled often anyway, I'm mainly talking about the indie devs.

But the point of sales and bundles is that many people that would never give a single peny for the game will end up doing so.

In the end, a bundled/cheap game will raise an amount based on its sales volume, so its a fine business model. They may raise additional money with DLCs, or even drag extra attention to their next title... that's how it's working nowadays with bundles mainly.

Here's a good example of a sale that worked: PixelJunk Eden Steam sale doubled Q-Games' income

Maybe to my eyes it's not worth the asking price. Maybe I don't have that kind of money now. Maybe it's not just the videogames industry, but shopping in general (see a brand of soap 50% off and go "I would not usually grab that, but since it's on discount I might as well give it a try"). Maybe I'm not willing to pay the premium price of instant access and rather spend half the money (you know, spending less money for an equally valid product is a good habit). Maybe I'm not a charity and if they want more money from me they have to do better marketing and/or offer me more, since I work for my money and it doesn't rain from the sky. Maybe offer is way higher than demand and eventually the garbage will die out because it's not sustainable anymore.
It's also better than piracy: developing costs are already spent, so selling more copies of a digital product means increasing profit, regardless of the price point.

Most of the games these days go on sale for sure, eventually.
And many (indie) games get bundled.

Now, if they really think that if people buy their games on sale or when in a bundle it will be a loss for them, why put the game on sale/bundle in the first place?
Do you think they are all so selfless people that they do something which doesn't profit them?

I think it depends how important a game is for you. If it is a game i want now, i just buy it but if i want it, but not right now, why not wait til the price drops a little.
It happened, that i bought games more than one time for different gaming systems (xbox, pc etc.) because i really love them and want to support the devs (and because they were not that new and cheap^^).
But i get your point and think you are right. If everyone would wait until the price drops the devs would not get enough money (often a problem for excellent but less sold games). So it depends if they deserve getting my full money or less or nothing.

The people who control the value of games are the publishers. If they weren't so keen to devalue their products by quickly going to sale or shoving their games in bundles then people would pay full price more often. It's supply and demand, and right now the market is being flooded with cheap games so people get used to it.

I do think it is possibly harmful to the industry, but believe it's for the industry to fix and not the consumers. All they need to do is stop going to sale/bundles as quickly as they do now, and if customers are thinking "wow, that looks great, and it won't be on sale for 2-3 years" then they'll be much more likely to pay full price. If folk know it's going to be on sale in 3-6 months then it often makes sense to wait.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is most likely true, for the ones who can afford and want the game.
I also believe taht another reason to wait is DLCs.. many games cough out so many DLCs which cost higher than the base game it self...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is right, too many DLCs nowadays and not many which give a real value to the game, just Weapon Pack #1, Costume Pack #3, that is why people often just wait for a GOTY edition.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That would be a very bad idea. If you wait 2-3 years for a sale, most people remotely interested, who aren't willing to pay full price, will have either: 1.) Picked up a different game that was on sale, or 2.) Completely forgotten about said game. If you get a $5 cut from Steam when you sell your game on sale for $7.50, it's at least 5 times better than getting $0 because that person didn't ever want to buy your game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree it would be a bad idea to wait that long before offering discounts in the current climate. I'm talking more as if the industry got together and agreed amongst themselves to do this, and if it became a standard thing for them to do. There would be games on sale if this was the standard, but they'd be older games. The choice would be between a new shiny game at full price or an older title at a reduced price. Now we get newish, or not so old titles at a reduced price.

Is it realistic for this to happen? Probably not, as companies are always going to try to compete with each other in terms of discounts even if they agree in principle that this race to the bottom isn't sustainable. And of course, customers love discounts.

There are a few exceptions, and I have even pre-ordered a couple of times for games I really wanted to play ASAP (and wanted to support the developer) but most of the time I don't buy any game that's not at least 50% off.

Why don't you do one of these things so that the devs get the money, instead of other people.
1> Buy the game from the developer's site (if available, whether it is DRM-Free or any DRM)
2> Contact the devs and arrange for buying from them directly.
3> Contact the devs and donate money to them.
Show them how much you support them, don't buy from steam or any sites which take a cut of the money.. buy from the devs, directly!

I often do. :) And I'm not forcing you to. I've just posted my opinion - because to the developers, this is their job. It's what pays them the rent and buys them food. I doubt, that anyone would buy the same amount of games for the regular retail price. At the end the budget is the same.
And there is one more point. Its not like milk-price dumping. Many more people buy game xy if its on sale( digitals copies with nearly zero more costs for developers , publisher, retailers and so on). It is their decision to put something on sale to generate more sales and at the end more money. And those bundles are also a way promotion. There are several games I have first seen here an steamgifts and bought them.

We're not killing the industry by buying bundles, and what, you think the developers aren't contacted when one of their games is chosen to possibly be put on sale for FAR more than it normally is? Of course not. Humble Bundle and numerous other sites don't just throw whatever together, they actually have to do things to not get sued. Most games in bundles are put there to try and give them a little boost, get them seen a little more, so that (hopefully) when the bundle is over, more people will buy it after they've seen a friend play it, or the friend tells them about it.

We're spoile indeed. Have you ever thought about the reasoning why we are being spoiled? The developers themself put their games in bundles just a couple of months after launch. Let me put it this way: what if the developers are sell their game for an 50% discount few months after the release because nobody buys it for full price. (and not because the game is bad, but because everybody is waiting for a sale/bundle)

"why buy a game for full price if it will be cheaper in the matter of a couple of months" yep that's why the indie developers messed things up and dug their own graves.

Okay, so we are spoiled for not buying games at full price.

I admit, if I can get a game cheaper then I will get the game cheaper. However, I do buy some games at full price because I am interested in playing them. It's the interest part that decides for me if I want to pay full price or not. Especially if I already like the developers, because I respect the time and dedication they put into games to create a unique experience. When it comes to AAA titles, I get about 85% of them during sales or discounts, unless it's made by companies I respect.

I have a lot of games, I don't need to wait for sales or bundles, so that's not how I think. I pick up bundles or cheap games because I can. Bundles are released every week and if I have the money I pick them up. At least I am paying for them, and since when is paying for something killing the industry? :D

Dude, I could afford buying a decent rig for gaming 2 years ago which even today runs new games on high (maybe not so ultra) but I can't afford to buy every major 40-50 euro game on release, because where I live price of the game is a 1/15 of the whole computer.

He didn't say you should buy all major releases. People even say it about a $6 indie game they want.

He did mean (all) the games which we like though.

I can't see how me not having money to buy games, destroys indie developers. What the hell. I can't afford games, period. I always will buy from a cheaper seller. And Enzime is right, 80% todays games SUCK.

I'm not talking about picking up a "half decent" game (for a metascore of 73/100 for example) on a sale, or buying it in a bundle, but for god's sake at least support the devs of the games that we absolutely LOVE and enjoy playing again and again. Most people don't even realize that if they support the devs that they like they will get more, and even better games from them in the future. It's an investment of sorts.

I didn't buy all the games I own on full price, I'd be broke if I did so. (my library is worth almost $3000 at the moment) I bought MOST of them on sales and from bundles.

However the games that I absolutely love and played for tens of hours I bought for full price. (Skyrim, Fallout 3/NV, Civilization 5 for example)

Well, they asked for it.

They literally flooded the market with games. Some are very good, but mostly, just average games not different from anothers, others are really awful.

Some time ago, being an indie meant something, they were delivering high quality games. But now (cant speak about all of them tho) they just make games, doesnt matter if it has replay value, or even if the thing works at all, some wont even start.

By flooding the market, prices have to go down, i mean, the number of gamers who pay has not gone up too much in comparison with the amount of games that are being produced.

My most played games are League of Legends and Hearthstone, I didn't pay anything for them and I don't plan to do so in the future. In my case I compere all games to them. I got hundreds of hours of playtime for free, obviously normal games are not even close to that.

But why did I even start buying games in the first place? Why not just play F2P games? Because of huge Steam sales and bundles! Without them I would never start to buy them in the first place. And I'm pretty sure developers are happy to get at least some money for my 300+ Steam games in compression to just playing F2P games without spending any money.

Also, I don't think that bundles are a bad thing for indie developers. They help to boost their game sales and making the game more popular (if it's good) same goes for the Steam start page (e.g. for sales). (Best thing I found after 10 sec googeling, I know I'm lazy...)
