Write them, they do have customer support, and they certainly don't want to sell you used keys.

No you don't. GOG titles are licensed just like every other digital platform. You just have more freedoms in how its used.

Do I need to log into my GOG account to install it all the time?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You only need to log in to download it initially. If you then back up the installer it'd be no different to having the disc

So something I can't really do with Steamdownloads?

So you pointed out that, when I purchase a game on GOG, I don't own the game in a sense.... a publisher owns the rights to a certain game?

(Hm... Oh well I just edited it, to make the sentence sound less misguiding..)

Steam does allow you to back game files but I can't personally comment on the reliability of that feature.

"Owning" a game on GOG is the same as any other digital distribution platform, you don't own it, you license it. It's a common misconception that you own your GOG games but it isn't the case.

GOG supporters frequently spout that as one of the main reason GOG is superior and make out that everyone else is clueless for not owning their libraries whilst being even more clueless themselves.

But I can't install steam games, when I don't have access to the steamlauncher, while I can install GOG-titles just through a installations-file, right? That's actually what I find useful about GOG. Heck, I never really used GOG, so I have no idea.

Well, so... you just don't like the loose (and wrong!) use of the word "owned" in connection to GOG?

Hum, actually I was just trying to cheer him up, because he bought the wrong version, but I hope Dodis knows that, when, god forbid, he dies one day, he can't just bequeath S.T.A.L.K.E.R to his children, since he still only owns a license.

People can buy whichever version they want, they just shouldn't be basing their purchase on misinformation.

That is certainly an honorable thought, as well as the wish for a more careful use of language - I wished I was better at that, too - but I believe that the great thing for people, who buy on GOG, is, that they can keep a copy of their beloved games on an external hard drive; stow it somewhere; and never have to bother about some weird DRM, that won't let them play their games, oneday.

Why not buy it from a trusted seller though?
Those there are people who make a living from selling keys. They're no scammers.

It's more likely for your house to burn down than for all of GoG's servers to go offline.

I am with SupremeX on this one, GoG is actually more convenient than a Disc Version. First of all, Disc Version needs space with a few games that is no problem, once you have like 50+ games it starts to become a problem (Game collectors can sing you a song about that). Discs can be scratched or otherwise be damaged. The use of a disc drive becomes more and more obsolete.

With the install from GoG you can put it on HardDrive and install it from there whenever you want, a modern HardDrive can hold hundreds of games and will take comparable much less space than a collection of boxed discs. Yes HardDrives can fail, so can a disc, yes GoG can shut down for good, but the staff of GoG has proven that it cares for its customers and they would likely announce such an event and give its customers buttloads of time to get their install files before shutting down.

Also to the point of "you can sell it", with the advent of digital stores for games, PC Games have hit rock bottom in terms of used prices. Most games you can sell for a buck a piece at most even classic games like Age of Empires, Dungeon Keeper have hardly any worth.

Except OP clearly didn't have a boxed version, as such giving shipping times the digital copy would be superior due to its instant delivery. As others have said, once the installer is backed up both are basically the same as far as accessibility down the line.

Cheap... sure
reliable... for the most part
doesn't require registration or download... for people that don't have internet, ok
can be played without even accessing the internet once... maybe, but what if there are legacy issues, a official patch or even unofficial fix needed

Wow... thanks for that, i knew i had somewhere a STALKER game lying around^^

Now i am interested if there is somewhere a list of games that lets you use a cd key to obtain digital copy of a game. I know blizzard lets you do it, registered my old copy of Diablo II about a year ago.

Ah... aside from the graphics, it's the gameplay that's aging, aswell. I'm well capable of playing and enjoying old games that I have played in my youth, since I'm used to certain quirks, but I can't get into some other old games now anymore.
Just don't wait too long! (although... STALKER was pretty okay already.) :)

Yeah, but once you played those newly and well-designed games it becomes harder and harder to go back to those old ones.

As an example: I tried playing Diablo 1 and I can't get over the fact how slow the character is, I played it shortly as a kid and it was fun, but the decission to not let him run... makes it so boringng today.... meh D:
Half of the game is just listening to those footsteps :D
