You find a genie in a bottle, but he's a special genie, he only deals in language wishes. So he will grant you instant fluency in any language of your choice, along with accent of your choice if applicable. You will be able to speak it, read it, write it, as if you were a native speaker.

It has to be a real language on Earth, no fake ones. No Klingon or Dwarvish or anything like that.

And before you complain that such-and-such language isn't in the poll keep in mind that I can only have 20 options. I googled to find the languages with the most number of speakers. But I also grouped some together, such as languages of India. I included an option for "Other" if the one you want isn't one of the poll options, but make sure you read over every option first because there are some "others" that are specific to a region of the world. Feel free to list it in the comments if you want.

No potato option. No giveaway. This is just to see what other people would choose because I'm curious.

Already know English and Russian. The other most useful language would be Spanish. But I'll go with French because

"I love French wine, like I love the French language. I have sampled every language, French is my favorite. Fantastic language. Especially to curse with. Nom de dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperie de connard d'enculer ta mère. It's like wiping your arse with silk. I love it."

Couldn't decide between Classical Latin and Japanese.
I'm (pleasantly) surprised anyone picked Polish. Compared to the rest, our language seems so useless.

I actually really want to learn more Polish and Russian, due to my ancestry. I just picked "other" since I'd love to know Latin "magically".

I want to be able to read THE TRILOGY someday in the native Polish, since the only translations easily available aren't supposed to be very good.

Poles are like Chinese, Hungarians, and Jews. No matter where you go in the world, even in the most remote corners you will find at least one of those.
Or a whole community.
(Although the way things go, Turks and Syrians may go to that list.)

You may be too young to remember when people used to say that in the 80's about Japan.

Arabic. Its grammar is very challenging; even native speakers (professional businessmen) may not know the proper grammer rules.

+1; it's also a very interesting language; learning new words is easy, but grammar is completely different from english

Chinese because I already know Russian, English, and Spanish. Besides, everyone knows China will eventually rule the universe some day ;). If I enjoyed manga/anime, I would, however, probably pick Japanese. Alas, sadly I do not enjoy manga/anime, but I understand why people would pick Japanese.

Chinese definitely. Because after a couple of years, the world is going to get filled up with Chinese (and Indians) everywhere. Billions and billions of them.

Weird that you may ask this, because I've been considering learning a language lately.

I guess I'd go for Japanese.

Why? Well, I've been thinking about it. I wanted to learn a language which I could use often enough not to lose it, and which would be helpful as well. At first, I seriously considered Russian since it's a language commonly seen on the internet and in gaming-related areas of the web.
I also considered Chinese, German and Spanish.

However, I chose Japanese because I've started watching quite a bit of anime in the past months. I can only watch dubbed ones because I can't focus on the subtitles when watching a video. If I were to learn Japanese, this would no longer be a problem.

Another reason is that Japan is an interesting location I might want to visit one day (along with New Zealand, the UK, and France). Being able to speak, understand, read and write Japanese fluently would be extremely useful in that situation.

I'd suggest you start by trying to concentrate on the subtitles and watch them in the original language.
Take me for example. Never actually gave a fuck about Japanese or so(learning it i mean) and even though i can't speak it or write it, i can understand common phrases that i've heard a lot in animes xD
So there's that xD

Yeah... Besides that, there's also the fact that the subs are (apparently) much better than the dubs in most cases. I don't know, I just can't focus on reading and watching at the same time.

Actually, I could understand both French and English when I was very young, the perk of having parents who speak different languages. I even used to use French more than English, but that slightly changed in time. Because of that, I never really needed to learn English, I somewhat learned it simply by living with English-speaking people. Now I only use French to speak with French-speaking relatives, mostly. :P
