Thanks for the info!

Seems like a waste of time though - a friend still needs to spend something for me to gain.

I don't do that to my friends and I don't have any that would do that to me.

Family are even closer to me than friends, perhaps if I knew someone who used Amazon regularly this would be an option but I don't.

I just don't assert my personal gain onto those who I count upon to be my social support.

Also I always hatted Amazon because there is an unremovable app on my ultra limited space mobile. Which also is not compatible with the free apps and discounts from Amazon in my country...

NOTE - it gives permissions to access the camera at ANY TIME without permission!?! WTF is that! Might as well set up an Amazon ECHO in my bedroom and tell it to start recording everything.

I'm OK with them listening but using the camera and seeing my family crosses the line.

they should add a way on the app stores to filter out invasive apps while searching.
also google should add a line item veto to app permissions, especially games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah Google should - but they won't.

Sorry, I wasn't being specific - I was going to try the Free Charlie Brown app for underground until I saw that Camera permission and said hells no. A kids game that wants access to the camera - good work Amazon /sarcasm.

Comment has been collapsed.

might be easier to fix than you think, just point out to the right ear that phone apps for young children sometimes have camera permissions which a certain type of dev could in theory use to sell 24/7 live cam vid of children on some site.
permissions might get an overhaul in a hurry.

that's because the charlie brown app is a camera app.....of course it's going to need camera permissions....

Yeah Google should - but they won't.

Actually, they did. Starting with Marshmallow (Android 6.0) you can revoke specific permissions.

Android Marshmallow has the line item veto you speak of.

thank you, good to know, my only experience is with 4.3 and not much of that even since I am reluctant to install apps with weird and irrelevant permissions.

Many times w/ custom roms (like cyanogenmod), they have built in controls for app permissions on older android versions (like 4.3)

Even stock roms, when rooted, can control app permissions.

I'm interested to know what it is you do with your phone camera... Mine would either record my pocket or ceiling when it's not in use, and probably wouldn't even see my family or anything even when I'm using my phone...

Plus do you seriously think that people would have the time to just sit there watching random recordings of crap around your house and stuff? That's as rediculous as any conspiracy theory I've ever heard, lol.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Perhaps once you have kids you would know what it is they do with the phone.

If you think humans need to sit there and watch the video to pick out faces and specific objects your understanding of modern technology is lacking. Excuse me for sounding a warning to other parents with kids, smh.

rEdiculous = naivete.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you're talking about young kids, then it makes even less sense to me, because why would they need to use your phone? Especially the way you make it sound like they aren't being supervised...
And believe me, I understand modern technology, but the kind of stuff you're talking about certainly doesn't sound like the kind of stuff that most app developers have access to...

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't want to argue but you can have all the education in the world and all the time on your hands but when you're sitting in the front seat of the minivan and the kids are crying sometimes a simple youtube video from your phone is enough to bring piece to your little corner in the world. 2 clicks away and the camera is activated without permissions.
Even with my wife sitting next to the kids they still click on things and it's hard to control them 3 on 1 - it's just easier to not have THAT app on the phone. Sorry, it shouldn't have been directed at Amazon directly. If I was selling the app I wouldn't want it listed on my store without BLATANT WARNINGS about the privacy intrusions - maybe I'm in the minority. I don't need to see Kim K's butt and don't want her seeing my kids.

Oops! I was franticly doing lots of amazon stuff, not paying attention to email.
It seems it is waaaay simpler than all the above.

Didn't download or install any app.

I did it on my Windows PC, and I just had to click on the orange "Get App" button on the right side of the product pages. I seem to have some Android device attached to my Amazon account though, because it tells me if a game is compatible with my device or not

So, what did the email you got say? Was it 2 separate emails, or just 1?I found on old Amazon account that had an attatched device and bought Bad Piggies, but the email only said 'Confirmation of order'. Didn't mention $5 anywhere, and the account's balance is 0 too.

Same here, pretty much. My account there is with a fake name and address as I'm not American so I can't have anything shipped to me. All I'm interested in is game downloads from them. Suppose I could buy mp3s, mobile games or digital books, but II'm not really bothered about doing that.

nope seems like a waste of time since you can only buy stuff being sold by amazon only not by other sellers like steam or something and there is not really much you can buy with 5$ with amazon products. I even tried to buy a amazon giftcard so I can use that to buy bioshock 2,.. didnt work...

Are you using Amazon Underground? The games in the promo are free (everything is free in Amazon Underground, the ones that say "Actually Free" on them anyway), once you download any of them, a few minutes later you get the e-mail with the $5 (it's like a gift card applied to your account).

I bought a book and used the $5 on it.
