I don't know how it works with TF2, it may upgrade it to Premium Status, or it may be unable to accept. Have no idea till someone tests it out.
Plus TF2 is free, joining it would likely be because someone wants a premium version. Premium lets you trade items and some other stuff.
Unless they already have a Premium edition TF2, but there's no way to tell I don't think.

An easy way is to check his TF2 backpack. Just open up the Steam Community profile and change the URL like this:
"http://www.steamcommunity.com/id/namehere"
to
"http://www.tf2b.com/id/namehere" (says /profile/ if the user has no vanity URL setup)
(or "www.tf2items.com", whichever site you prefer). This will show you the users TF2 backpack instantly.
If he has any "cosmetic items" such as hats etc. or , it's probably a premium account.
