I hear good things about LEGO Lord of the Rings, the co-op is supposed to be especially fun and it's only $7.50 on Amazon right now.

Also, it's a bit dated but the Knights of the Old Republic and Sith Lords are good RPGs that are on sale on Steam right now for $2.50 each.

Would he be interested in either of those?

Since he's 12 I assume you want to avoid some games like Call of Duty and so.

How about World Of Goo, Braid, Vessel, Cave Story and basically any other platformer since all have reduced if 0 explicit violence.

You can also try some funny adventure games like Deponia.

If you're not all against violence but want to avoid blood and all other things like that you can get him Torchlight 1 (or 2 for co-op) or Orcs Must Die! (or 2 for co-op).
Bastion is also a good choice.

Someone suggested Portal 1/2. In this case some nice RPG like King's Bounty would be nice. Or maybe Heroes Of Might And Magic.
I haven't seen many kids playing something like this but I have seen a few so but why not.
