Been looking into getting a small cheap media box. Thinking about using it to play video on my TV, and download torrents.

After exhaustive searching I have narrowed it down to two choices that are only cents away from being the exact same price. I did this mainly by finding the only two that support the new hevc/h.265 video playback.

The Odroid-C1 (http://ameridroid.com/products/odroid-c1): Moderately well known and supported, with developers who support linux/elec/android OSes. Basically I do not have to worry about anything on the openness and software front. I could dual boot ubuntu and OpenElec. It is designed for hardware hevc 1080p. Shitty case, bare bones.

CX-S806 Amlogic S812 (http://www.sunchip-tech.com/prod_view.aspx?TypeId=10&Id=51&FId=t3:10:3): Not really known well, hardly any reviews. Developers are pretty much non existent (took my an hour to find their website, no support). designed specifically for Android and only android, no idea how locked down it is (can I even root it? change its media player desktop?). As far as I am aware there has been some fan ports of elec, but I doubt I have a chance of getting ubuntu installed on this unless fans decide they want it enough to make a build. Comes with loads of great stuff like remote and wifi, amazing hardware that can handle 4K hevc. 100mb ethernet only, no external storage ports besides usb2.

So do I go with the relatively well supported/popular box with great software/OS support, or the beefcake hardware box with all the bells and whistles but where no one is going to care if there is a bug that prevents me from using it in a way I want to use it in (and as far as I know it is full of DRM and locks to prevent me from customizing it; Maybe all the ports are blocked so anythign other than web browsing fails)?

I really need some help.

Some time ago I've done my research on this and found out that it's better to invest some more $ and purchase Intel NUC.

For example BOXDN2820FYKH0, add 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD or 120GB SSD and it will cost you ~ 240$

I've the one above and I'm very happy with that choice, it's quiet and it has low power consumption, when idle ~6W
