You're sure, I just read that elections are reported until there's a new constitution... Abdelaziz might change things so the next president is his son or daughter or wife or pet...

Algeria's Bouteflika will not seek fifth term, delays elections
aljazeera.com

The ailing leader, who has been confined to a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in 2013, said a government reshuffle would also take place soon.

"Even if this is a beautiful victory for the Algerian people and the gesture was there, I do not believe that the entire regime and its system is going to collapse," said Dalia Ghanem Yazbeck, a resident scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center told Al Jazeera.

"This is a regime that is composed of different strata and circles of power. You have the FLN apparatchik, you have the bureaucracy, political and military leadership and you have business tycoons," she added.

but also:

"Bouteflika's system is over," said a commentator on Ennahar, which is close to the president's inner circle.

You should reconsider your "web portals" then. The protests have been in the news for more than two weeks.

You remove the face but the corruption has so damn deep roots, I do hope you fair better than us.

I really hope so.

Sadly recent history shows us that government changes in Muslim countries often bring radical religious zealots to power, rather than level-headed secular leaders. Which end up like Erdogan's Turkey, Morsi's Egypt or Khomeini's Iran. Which often offer much less freedom than the "dictatorship" they were meant to replace.

Same thing as in Saudi Arabia, where the ruling family is famously non-muslim (drikning alcohol, fornicating, etc. All are educated in Europe), but are ruling the country in the name of Allah. But if one day they get dethroned, it's pretty much 99% guaranteed the country is going to turn into ISIS-land.

Unfortunately, true, which is the reason more powerful countries are keeping these puppet dictators in power. "The devil you know" thing only ends up in bloodshed later down the road though so maybe they should spend their money educating people and promoting democracy instead of keeping their hands in everyone else's business.

Most often when an extremist regime arose, from Latin America all the way to Afghanistan, it was because people were so tired of the big countries pulling the strings that they were ready to support anything else. Look where we are now.

But that's exactly the Turkish example. Turkey had a dictatorship - but a pretty mild one. The country was blooming, international relations were excellent.
Then the EU forced them to become more democratic (for a chance to enter the EU).
So now Turkey is becoming more and more religiously radicalized, it has horrible international relations, even it's closest allies - Israel & US, don't want anything to do with it anymore. Everyone outside Turkey despises Erdogan.
And they now seek new friends in countries like Russia and Iran - which themselves are supposed "democracies" which are as bad as dictatorships.

Algerians have already managed to suppress an extremist Islamic insurgency during the 90s. I'm betting that there are plenty of people still around who remember that and don't wish to revisit another civil war.

That might just be another reason why not to fight the extremism now, and just let it take power...

Presidents for life really are democracy's last fart. I hope you don't need examples from me, as it's sufficient to spin the globe and you'll find them on all continents. The people didn't have any power and they never will.

When I heard it on the news, I thought about you.

It's a start and a victory, albeit small in the big scheme of what's left to accomplish but the first one is always the hardest so kudos on the peaceful revolution and good luck for the next steps.
