Humble Bundle Partners With Epic Games

Some interesting news out of GDC 2019. Epic is now partnered with HB you can read about it in a brief article here

I'm guessing we will be seeing games for the Epic Store in HB bundles as well as the monthly soon.

That give me, at least, 1 year to lower my backlog and i save money with lesser buys :-D

Best thing for Valve to do is rewrite its contracts for large publisher so if they advertise on steam then push back release date like a few have to put it on another launcher(epic), they have to pay a fee equal to the number copies that would have been sold on steam. Something like this...
I'm pretty sure Valve is going to do something about this bait and switch tactics.

They need to do something. If they can prove that a dev made a pre-release deal with valve just to get publicity hen the dev had no plans to release on valve, then they have what I would consider to be an excellent case.

They need to cull 70% of the steam store games, make sales relevant again and really try to keep loyal customers and long standing developers instead of relying on a monopoly to keep control. Well done epic. p.s. fortnite sucks but it has helped this happen so i guess it aint too bad.

collected data without permission (Steam data) While saying first we wont add those features not even in the future
Acc &Bill data got leaked through specific Urls to the Account case. so can pretty easy hack accounts with cookies .
Epic did kill UT4/Paragon and throws every game away after it dont sell
Epic game store downloads automatically fortnite ...
Support is slow did take around 6months to answer about a problem for their own sake +100 other reasons

Actually I don't really think it's at most McDonalds in the states either. In the USA we have some original stores still and they feature really cheap prices. I haven't been to one of those in years though but I'm pretty sure it was something like $0.59 to $.0.69 hamburgers and $0.79 to $0.89 cheeseburgers. They have double cheeseburgers at most stores on the dollar menu though if I remember correctly.

what and publishers putting their games in bundles has not done far worse damage to cheapening. Anyway markets will dictate sales times i.e. a game sells shit ... do they try to get 50% of original price early i.e. a month or two after launch from more people or nothing and maintain 100% of the prices for a long time - fallout 76 being a good example.

I love how games are going to epic .... steam have been negligent for far too long.

This isn't a negligence issue. Don't be naive here.

Epic's bribing for publishers. That's all this is. Literal corporate bribing. They pay them a sum and guarantee sales (which will be compensated for from Epic's pocket should they not reach those sales on their own) and in return Epic gets exclusivity over the game for a year. That's all this is.

Though, maybe you are correct and it actually turns out that Obsidian's the dumbest developer to exist in the 21st century. You might be right. They might truly be taking away the majority of their income for shits and giggles. I'm joking here, by the way. There's no chance that they're idiots. They're smart. This is a business move on both ends. One that's extremely underhanded and anti-competitive, but still a deliberate business move.

Outer Worlds is definitely a great scoop for Epic. Though it's also obvious that Microsoft has their mitts in Obsidian's business now, since this reeks of Microsoft. This isn't a move that Obsidian would pull and it shows. This will hurt Obsidian's integrity and reputation and this is actually starting to look like Pandemic all over again. So yeah, a solid scoop, but it's at the expense of their integrity, trust, favorability and long-term profits.

It's been a thing for months now and there hasn't been any competition because this doesn't create competition in any way.

Epic could've been competitive for customers, but they chose not to be. Sweeney even sneered at customers, saying that the winner of all of this will be the publishers. The same Tim Sweeney that pussied out of the PC market due to piracy and then slithered back in when Valve had fixed the issue for the most part. Look at almost anything the man says and you'll see that this has never been and will never be a competition for customers.
Prices won't change on what is essentially a glorified second webpage for the same exact store.

Epic forced developers into full exclusivity deal, not only "no Steam", but also "no shops anywhere".

I mean, they even "forced" Ubisoft to take Division 2 from all other 3rd-party stores and nobody can't sell Uplay keys (I don't think they really had to force them, more money for Ubisoft, but it is Epic contract that made it happen).

With HB Partnership we finally might see some price competition.
But then, since it is Epic Partnership, that probably means it's Epic selling keys, so it's Epic that dictates prices, which means no competition...

Jokes aside, I think I only partially agree - in the end it is better for consumers to decide what they want to play instead of Little Timmy who "knows better".

I wonder if devs who were criticizing few years ago that "Valve didn't put our game on Steam" or "CDP didn't put our game on GOG" will now criticize Epic for doing same thing.

Everyone has a different opinion of what crap is. This is Sweeny's.. "We'll have a quality standard that doesn't accept crappy games," he said. "We'll accept reasonably good quality games, of any scale, whether small indie games to huge triple-A games, and we'll take everything up to, like, an R-rated movie or an M-rated game. A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic's not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that's meant to shock players. The PC's an open platform and if we don't distribute it in our store you can still reach consumers directly."

My opinion of what's crap is some of what was mentioned... bloatware and asset flips. Stuff that no one wants to play that just gets added to the store for cards or 1 million "achievements".

Here's some prime examples...

Says Tim Sweeney. The dude's a damn snake in the gaming industry. He blows smoke up everyone's ass, is an arrogant bastard, doesn't actually have the chops to make a change on the market and instead leeches off of other people's successes.

Epic's already a kettle that calls the pot black. Their entire storefront is a canvas that's barely filled with anything. A door without a handle and only a single working hinge. Axiom Verge (if that's the correct game) literally was on their storefront still with Steam DRM on it. They have less than 100 games and yet this shit still happens. They're down to talk shit on Steam, but they also are comfortable enough with stealing information from Steam and then backtracking with their tail between their legs once they're caught.
Sure, they might accept only good games, but it's ironic since now they've shifted the crap-taking to the games that have to lower their standards for stores because EGS is a heap of dung.

Steam's not perfect here. Not at all. But unless you've (Not you specifically. I mean the reader.) watched too much Jim Sterling and took everything he said without any grain of salt, then you'll see that Steam's been pretty alright overall. Emphasis on the "alright". They're not perfect and they have a hell of a lot to improve. But so does everyone and everything. The fact here is that Epic doesn't even hold a candle to even the basic feature standards that Steam has.

Untrue.

Tim Sweeney is not Darren Sugg. Tim Sweeney is not Wes Phillips. Tim Sweeney is not Eric Williamson.
Tim Sweeney is the CEO of Epic Games. Tim Sweeney didn't create Fortnite. Tim Sweeney didn't create Fortnite: Battle Royale. Mind you, he's very keen on letting the press call him the creator, he actually didn't create anything. He didn't do anything for Fortnite other than being the CEO of Epic. Tim Sweeney's a snake. A snake that willingly lets undue credit go to him, not the hard-working people behind it, whose only claims to fame right now are Facebook posts, Twitter bios and Wikipedia articles. Unlike Sweeney, who happened to have the press behind him, where he talks about the game that he didn't create. What a wonder.
At least Todd Howard actually is the lead designer.

Steam needs a reality slap

It's a bit of a hostile way to say it, but yeah, Steam needs solid competition.

and I'm thankful there's Epic to do it.

That's a bad one to choose to champion your position. They are anti-competitive, they have the worst spokesperson in gaming industry currently and public opinion on Epic is in the dumps. No matter where you look, all you see is anger, hate and occasional skeptical optimism. Remember what it was when the platform was annouced? Before all of the anti-competitive crap they pulled? People were overall happy that Epic was there to provide competition to Steam. Though, some were annoyed by the new launcher and some didn't believe Epic could compete. Epic won't do anything. Their strategy isn't sustainable. You can't throw millions at every game. Developers aren't joining either because they are all hoping for an exclusivity deal for extra cash. You've chosen a rich millionaire that bribes for support. That's all you've done. If you think that's a good choice, fair enough.

I would ask as an extra though: How many games have you bought from Epic as of now? You support them in principle. Do you actually support them financially though? Also, since you want Steam to get into shape, you've bought 0 games for the Steam DRM in 2019, right?

now that you mention it, i have had some games through humble where i had to pick a steam key over something else (can't remember if it was drm-free download access or a key to a different system), so having a choice is just as likely. still, i don't see humble switching from steam keys to epic keys so more choice is a good thing.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm guessing it's whatever the publisher wants it to be. And that will come from whatever Humble offers them for the specific type of key. And that will come from if Epic or Steam have made a special deal with Humble for better cuts.

If everything stayed where it currently very likely is, then of course it'll be Steam keys when the game's on both platforms (if they had to choose one). A bigger client base being the reason for that.

More choice is definitely a good thing. Something that I tend to forget due to Epic pulling so much shit. But in the end, competition's good as long as it's fair. That way merit wins and merit benefits both the developer and customer.

I feel bad for Obsidian. This is obviously Microsoft's hand guiding them here. I can't really imagine Obsidian, the developer that is pretty in-tune with the core PC audience, to be behind this.

Outer Worlds was actually a game I was really looking forward too. I've looked forward to 4 games in total before. The Viking Conquest DLC for M&B: Warband, Watch_Dogs 1, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and now this. So overall, I'm pretty skeptical about games. But this move isn't making me more excited. In fact, this game will fade from my memory very quickly now. No question about it. Maybe I'll remember to buy it at some point. If Microsoft/Obsidian think that people won't forget about their game in that year-long period, then they're pretty arrogant. Good games come out all the time and their game isn't worth any more attention than the others.
If they think having a fake-out on Steam, accepting a corporate bribe for an unexpected exclusivity and then not having the backbone to stay with their exclusivity, instead coming back and pleading for more sales, is in any way acceptable, then fair enough.
As I always say: You have a right to do whatever isn't illegal. But I also have the right to judge you and talk shit about it. I think this move is fucking terrible for their core fans. They were worried that Microsoft will shove their greasy palm up Obsidian's ass and puppet it around for its amusement and profits. They said this wouldn't happen. This either shows that they lied or that they're all of a sudden completely out of touch and that they don't trust/care for their fans enough to let them buy the game.

But yeah, in hindsight, it's obviously TakeTwo because the developers only found out about the exclusivity just a day before the announcement. TakeTwo's despicable though. Really are. People are so focused on EA, Ubisoft and whoever else, but TakeTwo literally said that they're undermonetizing their userbase, while running GTA: Online.

That's dumb. More than dumb. The counter-argument could be that the Dragon Age series had its absolute most successful entry, Inquisition, once the series completely left Steam. BioWare still lists it as their highest-selling game ever. Yet miraculously it did not require Steam to do it. Nor was it available at any other store on PC than Origin during launch.

Wanna hear something even more shocking? Here: https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-explains-why-the-division-2-is-an-epic-games-store-exclusive/
Division 2 goes to Epic store and its pre-sales are getting higher. That article says that if anything, skipping Steam nowadays can be beneficial for sales.

Metro Last Light already had a large marketing budget and it made enough money to end up in a remaster/quasi-remake, along with the first game, which alone added over 1 million unit sales. It was in the top 100 best-selling video games of its release year, for fuck's sake. 2.5 times a top 100 entry is something that is very much classified as a success and no, Steam would have not made it better.

The harsh reality is that despite half of the internet being full of crybabies going against Epic, when it comes down to actually backing up the words, they simply go to Epic and buy the game. Just as they did with Origin, battle.net, or Bethesda Launcher, and just how they will do with Uplay once UbiSoft grows a spine and leaves Steam as well.

I think there is a huge difference between launching your own game on your launcher than stealing it from others, plus they didn't mention the PC sales anywhere so I think the consoles were the huge part of that, but maybe you're right.

As for the division 2, I find this quote very interesting "preorders on the Ubisoft Store are six times higher", so people preorder on uplay directly rather than ordering it on epic. That's for me is not succeeding at all on epic part, it's like what one of the comments said "Ubisoft used Epic as a cheap condom".

Metro pre-order on steam where from 200k to 500k how is that "not made it better" and yes x2.5 is a success but, it's nowhere near a 3rd installment game success at all

again the wither 3 did x15 better than it's 2
skrim did x7 time than oblivion
diablo 3 did x13 times better than Diablo 2
BF1 did better than BF4 and hardline combined
GTAV did x86 better than GTA IV

So?.....

As for the last part I was one of the "crybabies" and I didn't buy it on epic.

This would only be worthwhile if any EGS games bought on Humble get Steam keys added down the line... and vice versa.

They can make crappy Epic Games bundles the way they please. Just don't add'em on our Humble Monthlies.

On the Humble Monthly page it's stated that: "On the first Friday of each month, you'll get a bundle of awesome games. Add them to your Steam library and play on PC. Check out what subscribers have gotten so far!".

So we expect Steam keys to add to our Steam library!

But then we already got Uplay/Blizzard keys so it is most likely we'd be getting Epic game ones too. It is just unavoidable unfortunately.

I really like this competition. Maybe Valve will make great games again to compete this Epic Store

I like the part of the competition but... putting exclusive games in Pc between stores...
I´m not want to have 325823778637826827868286 launchers for each game.

A game not comes to steam... I´m not buying it... simple...
I prefer to play it on PS4 or maybe... not even playing it... I´m not like where this is going (this has nothing good for the players for now).

Free games are good. And Epic is offering great games even though I already have them on Steam

I really don't get all this love for Epic, nor do I get all the hate for Steam. In all my years using steam, I've never had a single issue that wasn't quickly resolved, and Epic does nothing special. What exactly is it that Epic does that some find to be so great? And why all the hate for Steam?

It's not about steam or Uplay or epic or whatever.

I play games I don't play clients.

Also I am happy steam resolved your problems, but sadly it did nothing to me, I just got useless reply from a bot. A friend of mine got hacked, the hackers got him a vac ban and steam did nothing to fix that, so... No one is perfect
