Hi SG, we just rolled out an update to the way blacklists work, and I wanted to create a quick announcement to explain the difference. Previously, if you blacklisted a user, they would not be able to enter your giveaways, or see them on the homepage. Now, there is one addition: If you blacklist a user, you will also not be able to enter their giveaways, or see them on the homepage.

There are two reasons for the change...

  1. It's more fair to giveaway creators, and it prevents users from quietly blacklisting a giveaway creator, while continuing to enter their giveaways.
  2. It will encourage users to put more thought into their reason for blacklisting another user, and it should discourage blacklisting over minor grievances.

This might leave you wondering, is there anything preventing you from unblacklisting a user, entering their giveaways, and then blacklisting them again? Yes. When unblacklisting a user, there is a delay between one second and one day week until you once again see their giveaways on the homepage, and have access to entering them. If you try to directly open their giveaways sooner, you will see an error, such as "You do not have permission to view this giveaway for another 35 minutes, since you previously blacklisted the giveaway creator.". The length of the delay is proportional to the amount of time you had the user blacklisted (i.e. if you blacklisted a user for 5 hours, you'll need to wait 5 hours after unblacklisting the user), up to the maximum of one day week.

Glad to see this implemented. Unlike some of the others, I would like to see the minimum delay kept where it is now. I've been known to accidentally click the blacklist button when I meant to click either the whitelist or even steam profile button (blame my bad eyesight and short attention span) and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It especially happens a lot when I'm on a mobile device as the touchscreens can be a bit finicky.

Wouldn't it be better to separate the two buttons more and have a dialog box to confirm blacklisting?

That would actually be a lot better. Good idea :)

Or an input box where you can put a reason. I would really love SG to keep track of reasons for blacklists, and requiring a reason would double as an excellent form of confirmation.

This is an excellent idea! If it wasn't posted before it would justify its own thread in the Bugs & Suggestions forum.

I usually blacklist people when I suspect they have created a fake giveaway. I check later to see whether it really was fake, if it wasn't, I remove them from BL, if it was they stay. What happens in my case when I remove them? I stay on their BL? nevermind, I got it

It's a solid idea, but I would have preferred if you made possible to see the list of people that whitelisted you

You can border with ~~ to strike-through (assuming your current formatting wasn't intentional).

It was presumption. I'll fix it asap, thanks for the info

Good way of doing it. This makes "revenge blacklists" pointless.

Do whitelists take precedence though? I'm not at all concerned about who blacklists me, but I would really like those I whitelist to be able to enter giveaways I make regardless of what list they put me on.

no, my test of temporarily blacklisting a user that had me whitelisted showed whitelist does not take precedence, the blacklisting does.

Great job. This means that I can clear out most of my own list and leave the rest to people's own accord :)

Awesome! Hopefully my blacklist count will start dropping now :)

The more forum GAs (invite-only) you create the quicker it will drop ;-)

Can I unblacklist the people who blacklist me? I have no grievances towards anyone, not even those who'd blacklist me. Perhaps make Two-Way Blacklisting optional for the receiving person (the one getting blacklisted) so he doesn't automatically blacklist them back?

Will a persons entry be removed from your GA if they blacklist you?

If not, is being on their blacklist a viable reroll?

No and no, as of now.

Woohoo! That's quite awesome. :O People just keep blacklisting everyone. Maybe they'll think twice now before they go on a blacklist spree. xD

For us mobile users who accidentally click blacklist instead of whitelist, can we have a confirm button please?

+1. I might not be on the mobile site but I've also accidentally clicked the BL button when I went to WL someone. (Bad wrists from sports accidents)

Glad you're here, I didn't think about that.

For me it could go the either way, but I understand the reasons, maybe there will be less BL drama. Thank you for listening and caring of the community.

I like the change, however "If you blacklist a user, you will also not be able to enter their giveaways, or see them on the homepage.", don't you think it would be better to let me see their giveaways and prevent me from entering instead? If I don't see them, I basically will never know about them and will never consider unblacklisting anyone. I totally agree that blacklisting should work in two ways, but I think showing people what they miss out would help them reconsider in some cases. I'm certainly not the forgiving type, but even so, I had it happen to me once, that I entered and won a giveaway made by someone I had blacklisted. Since I usually check the profile of the person I won something from and put them on whitelist as a small token of appreciation, said person happens to be on my whitelist ever since.

Really nice change; now, can we get more blacklist spots? I want to be able to blacklist everyone without basic manners to say thank you when they get something from me.
Maybe make the number of them proportional to made giveaways?
