Hi SG, we just rolled out an update to the way blacklists work, and I wanted to create a quick announcement to explain the difference. Previously, if you blacklisted a user, they would not be able to enter your giveaways, or see them on the homepage. Now, there is one addition: If you blacklist a user, you will also not be able to enter their giveaways, or see them on the homepage.

There are two reasons for the change...

  1. It's more fair to giveaway creators, and it prevents users from quietly blacklisting a giveaway creator, while continuing to enter their giveaways.
  2. It will encourage users to put more thought into their reason for blacklisting another user, and it should discourage blacklisting over minor grievances.

This might leave you wondering, is there anything preventing you from unblacklisting a user, entering their giveaways, and then blacklisting them again? Yes. When unblacklisting a user, there is a delay between one second and one day week until you once again see their giveaways on the homepage, and have access to entering them. If you try to directly open their giveaways sooner, you will see an error, such as "You do not have permission to view this giveaway for another 35 minutes, since you previously blacklisted the giveaway creator.". The length of the delay is proportional to the amount of time you had the user blacklisted (i.e. if you blacklisted a user for 5 hours, you'll need to wait 5 hours after unblacklisting the user), up to the maximum of one day week.

Awesome change.
One thing I prefer more about the cooldown period of un-blacklisting is the is cooldown till the current GAs end rather than cooldown based on static timings. It seems it doesn't matter because the blacklister can't see the blacklisted's GAs or vice versa, but they can on discussion boards and invite only GAs such as train and events.
Another thing I would have been more happy was if there was some field where I can input why I blacklisted or whitelisted anyone. Not that I have huge list of BL or WL but I tend to forget why I BLed them. Some with serious cases such as regifting, leak of GA link, multiple unactivated gifts. I don't want them to be out of my BL when I clean out my list.

A thousand scripts exist to help you remember, but it's per browser install.
Best to just write it down by hand.

mahermen's SG User Notes lets you import and export your user tags. I've been using it for a while last year and it worked fine but then I forgot about it after I had to reinstall all my scripts ;)

That's the drawback I am facing. I am constantly between various browsers and devices, so if it would have been a inbuilt feature it would be awesome.

I guess you have users blacklisted and they got added to your graph with the new changes. I dont have any users blacklisted and because of the changes users starts clearing their blacklists because they cant enter their giveaways anymore.

So its seems that this change makes people think before they randomly adds people for no reason.

Same here, im confused as to why though? Is it literally because they want to enter my GA's?

The only other reason I can think of is that I blacklisted them first, and now that they don't need to maintain their mutual blacklist they just emptied it, without caring who was in it.

Thats not right. We tried it right now. Someone blacklisted me. Then unblacklisted me... now he can see my giveaways again but I cannot see his giveaways. Thats stupid -.-

There's a bug, because you should be able to instantly see his giveaways again after he unblacklisted you. I know what the issue is, and it'll be resolved in the hour.

Dont know if its a bug again but I unblocked someone out of my blacklist and now I have this message if I try to enter his giveaway:

You do not have permission to view this giveaway for another 3 days, since you previously blacklisted the giveaway creator.

Thats how it should work but why he can join my giveaway? Shouldnt he wait 3 days too?

I assure you nobody would complain if you give cheap games you didn't even have to pay money for (using this method other others). You don't need to give 10€ games. You actually don't need to give anything, but if you add a comment like your first one on this discussion, and you give 1 game a year, you're basically inviting the type of replies you got.

May I suggest a little extra thing to the change, I think that there should be a cooldown after unblacklisting so people can't just enter a giveaway and re-blacklist the user immediately after the GA ended.

I was referring to a delay before you're allowed to blacklist the user again, as the system is right now someone could unblacklist the GA creator, wait a day, enter the GA, wait for it to end and if they don't win it just blacklist them again.

Permalink

Depending on how its setup they may not even have to wait for the giveaway to end as getting blacklisted didn't prevent you from winning someone's giveaway. With the rules change, I'd suggest blacklisting someone removes you from their giveaways unless it was already set this way (but not specified).

I think not allowing them to enter any current GA(s) of user will solve the issue. If they just want to un-BL someone for GA(s) and then again BL them, that's too much greed I say.

One question on this.
Based on new update

  • If A blacklists B, then there will be automatic entry on BL of B for A.
  • A un-blacklists B serves some cool-down
  • What happens to B's BL that contains A which was automatically triggered?

Another case,
I had someone who BLd me because I created a thread. Rather then having any positive feedback he argued and BLd me. I found out and BLd him too. What happens if that same guy wants to un-BL me? Will it remove him from my BL? I don't want that. I want such guys to stay on BL.

A is not in B's blacklist, It is a different check, so no need to remove anything.

If anyone blacklists you, you BL them back and then the user removes you, you both are still not able to enter each others giveaways as you still have the user in your blacklist.

Ok I understand now, rather than list its a check. Nice..

To re-iterate and simplify what some have already suggested in previous comments - instead of using timers, unblacklisting should only allow the user to enter GAs that start afterwards. In other words, if I unblacklist someone, I should still not be able to enter any of their current GAs, only ones they'll create in the future.

With that said, I'm one of the few who would want this whole feature to be optional, so the above doesn't directly apply to me (but still makes sense).

Wow that's disgustingly smart. Actually, afterwards OR before, and blacklisting removes entries, but by unblacklisting you can enter again?

Because accidental blacklisting happens.

Or am I missing something?

Eh :|

As far as I understand, one can unblacklist, wait until time allows, enter the GA, then blacklist again. The proposal above blocks this potential abuse.

As for accidental blacklisting can be mitigated by prompting the user: "Are you sure you want to BLACKLIST that user? You won't be able to enter their giveaways if you do." (this is based on suggestion by propofolpls).

Nice :D Now I won't have to check every time if GA I'm trying to enter was made by someone on my BL.

And it's better than adding user that BL me on my BL. As it could easily lead into lack of BL spots on BL list :D
