Basically together with my friend we're looking for games similar to L.A. Noire. If you played that title, then you know what exactly we're looking for.

  • Single-player detective game - solving cases, puzzles, finding clues, typing suspects (no HOGs)
  • Good story - game should have moments of "I wonder what happens next"
  • It has to include choices and expect from player actual effort, plus include gameplay (so VN-based stuff is probably out)
  • Preferably more recent (2010+) stuff than retro, although not a strict requirement
  • It'd be excellent if it was on PC, even better if it's available on Steam (not really a requirement)
  • Bonus points if it's non-linear game, not a requirement
  • Bonus points if it's open-world game, not a requirement
  • Bonus points if I happen to own it already, definitely not a requirement

Thanks!

There is no game like L.A. Noire, it is pretty unique game on its own. Other than stuff people said, there is one game on my mind:
Condemned: Criminal Origins - most of the key features are there, no quick drawing of suspects, I'm afraid :( (but you can still type suspects with a steel pipe or a plank with nails on it - or many other choices)
It's a bit of horror, so.... good luck if you are afraid of things like that.
EDIT : and if you ever gonna play it, don't use the taser gun, it's too op and it's way better experience without it (use it only in too tough situations).

Bohemian Killing maybe?
Obduction maybe? (or Myst/Raven games?)
Deadly Premonition maybe?

I'm too lazy to read over all replies so it's very likely someone else already wrote them:

  • Deadly Premonition (it's one of my favs, however i heard the port to pc is very bad).
  • Murderer: Soul Suspect.
  • Fahrenheit

Those are the ones that comes to my mind that are on pc. I know a bunch more but those are for DS and Vita.
If i remember any other i will write again.

It's a really short game, but you should try Her Story (detective game, wonderful story, interesting gameplay mechanics)

Sadly I didn't like that one for some reason, dropped it almost instantly. I didn't enjoy the way how game works at all.

Small update: I started ABC Murders as initial one (after Cjcomplex's recommendation on 2hu chat, game is great so far), I plan to start Soul Suspect next, and then we'll see (sadly Heavy Rain is not on PC for now, I might want to try Fahrenheit next).

Thanks a lot for all suggestions! I appreciate it a lot.

Fahrenheit is closer to the Matrix and I really hope you have a controller or godly reflexes, because the entire game is controlled as an endless series of quick-time events between the non-interactive movie segments (which make up over half of the gameplay).

I'd say that maybe Blues and bullets but it is an episodic game and devs seem to abandon it after second episode. Despite that people say it is good game, just not fair action from the devs.

And it's in current IG bundle, which means my group buys friends already claimed a copy for me - this is a really nice position, despite of recent bad reviews and people getting salty. I might want to try it out as my 3rd one, thanks for this!

This looks good enough to be addition to my backlog right away, even if it doesn't exactly fit what I'd expect, added, thanks!

It is hyper casual to the point you'll know the culprit halfway in, but the writing and voice acting are spectacular.

I know that VN type of stuff is probably out, but if you want a good murder-mystery and catching people on lies then you should consider buying Danganronpa 1 and 2. I'd really recommend DR 2 since it's a better version in every aspect. The story is amazing in both games, although it's more mind-blowing in DR 2, and there are more options in DR 2. It may not seem interesting since basically it's a visual novel. You talk with people, you go to places, but when a murder happens you have to collect clues, and after a short time the best thing takes place: The Class Trial. It's a huge discussion about the case in which you have to listen to what the characters are saying and call them out on their lie. It can really pump your adrenaline to the sky especially when you are close framing the culprit. And if you liked both games you can wait until September for Danganronpa V3. There is an anime version of the whole DR 1, but the anime doesn't really makes any effort to deepen the characters. The first episode gives a great explanation of the setting and it doesn't contain the first murder case so it doesn't give any spoilers away.

And I know that a lot of people already recommended it, but Deadly Premonition. If you can get over the fact that the graphics are horrible, the port is terrible and the developers never decided what this game want to be, then you will experience the best and weirdest story a horror/mystery game ever introduced.

Kinda far fetched but maybe something like Face Noir or The Detail? The other ones I can think of atm were already mentioned... and there's always stuff like Police Quest ;>...

Batman Arkham City tried itself at the best detective of the world theme (not counting the excellent yet Tomb Raider´esque Riddler stuff), yet falling short a little it still fits most of your prerequisites and is commonly regarded as the best game in the franchise. It´s a kickass game anyway!

Then there´s Batman Arkham Origins which I have´n played much yet, however the early bits showed improvements to the detective part across the board, even though they´re obviously still on the backburner in a gameplay perspective (you have to punch faces in alot more then doing ???´s).

As a fan of adventure and detective games there are some very very good recommendations here so far.
I would especially recommend all the Agatha Christie games (The ones made by former The Adventure Company) and the new one of course, as well as Sherlock Holmes games. I was playing Testament of Sherlock Holmes but have heard Crimes & Punishment is better.

Now, one game no one has suggested is D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die. I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but it has been on my WL forever and seems to fit what you are looking for. Here's a review that sums it up preety good.

The Raven of course. Haven't played it yet but seems similar to previous Agatha Christie games but with much better graphics.

Other detective games are the Still Life series, of which I have played only Post Mortem, but I got bored half way through and never finished it. (Still Life 1 and 2 should be better)

Definetely check out the Dreamfall series, not sure if it's completely detective, but fits many points. I started from Dreamfall: The Longest Journey and for a game released in 2006 it was pretty innovative with open world, nonlinear, multiple choices etc. And Dreamfall Chapters was just released not so long ago. I plan to replay the whole series soon.

One adventure/detective game set in futuristic world that I also enjoyed (one of my favourite ones) is Culpa Innata from 2007 with open world, nonlinear gameplay: multiple objectives you can choose to do in order you like, many choices in story that lead to different endings etc. Sequel was in the making but unfortunately the company went bankropt so the sequel never saw the light of day. :(

Sadly only the ABC Murders is available on Steam now, I love the Agatha Christie books :(

I also used to have D4 on my wishlist, but I removed it since it seems likely that we won't be getting a Season 2 (read the newer reviews) :(

not quite it but:

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN
needless to say the gameplay is grand - haven't enjoyed a SP game as much as MGSVPP; beside he active story, there is plenty of "passive" plot to discover, in text and audio which doesn't make it detectives work, but very fun and intriguing getting to know and to listen to; slowly you get to put the "puzzle" together MGS is, while having a blast doing so (partially even outside of the game - reading up on the plot or something of sorts)

... tried playing L.A. Noire just recently - had that weird GTA allure i can't stand, might try myself MSS someday that seemed more appealing
