They are invite-only because everyone is able to enter regardless of owning the basegame. Yes, these expansions do show up as individual games in Steam library, but they behave like DLC when you try to redeem them, at least these CD key copies I have. So it became pretty much impossible to roll a proper winner when I gave these away week ago:)

Well thats because theyre seperate games. You dont need to own quake to play the expansions (theyre not dlc)

Try buying them from Steam Store and it will tell you must own the basegame.

In any case, the 3 winners who got these week ago from my giveaways were not able to redeem them. They got this error:

Please first activate the original game. The product code you've entered requires ownership of another product before activation..

I have also asked a friend who does not own Quake to try and redeem, and it's the same result. https://steamdb.info/app/9040/info/
shows this details:
dependantOnApp Quake (app/2310)
MustOwnAppToPurchase Quake (app/2310)

Ah okay then. Youre right. I just thought they were seperate because they show that way in my library.

Originally the Quake Mission Pack 1 & 2 required original Quake (I know this because I won Mission Pack 1 from local PC magazine and had to buy Quake) but when both were added to Steam they were made to be played without Quake. So in short: Quake Mission Pack 1 & 2 don't require basegame, dunno about Quake II Mission Pack.

I don't think anything has changed. Yes, these expansions show up as separate library entries, so in that sense they don't seem to be DLC.

But when it comes to purchasing them, Steam doesn't allow it if basegame not owned. So in that sense they behave exactly like DLC though:)

Oh ok, I stand corrected :) I remember winning the first mission pack and was really bummed when I noticed that I still need the original :D Well I just had to buy it and I'm glad I did, great game. Maybe I'll have to buy them again, but on Steam this time (I think I have misplaced my cds).
