Borderlands 2 GOTY Edition includes everything from Borderlands 2.

Edit: If you want nearly everything from Borderlands - check out the "The Handsome Collection" from Borderlands.
That includes everything from Borderlands 2 and Pre-sequel

+1 for Handsome Collection. As mentioned above, the GOTY edition has all of the DLC that was released up until that moment, but they added more later along with the Pre-Sequel stuff. Handsome Collection was released later and includes all the DLC that was released after GOTY edition, except "Commander Lilith and the Fight For Sanctuary" which was released just as BL3 was being released as a sort of tie-in (in lieu of a "pre-sequel 2" I suppose), and you should definitely play that DLC last after completing both BL2 and Pre-Sequel. Plus you also get the Pre-Sequel, and all DLC for that game with the Handsome Collection... two games for the price of one!

Thanks for the detailed answer . This is what i went with . And i also ended up buying the Lilith DLC from Humble cause it was on sale.

However it was listed as region free ... but turned out to be region locked so now im in a dispute with them about refunding it :/

I didnt know where it fit in the story tho , so now i will know to play both games before we get around to it :) Thanks !

If you and/or your friend haven't played it yet, I highly recommend also getting Borderlands GOTY Enhanced Edition (the improved first game). BL1 is not included in the Handsome Collection It includes all the DLC, plus it's ... well, enhanced. Like a Remaster, sort of, they mainly updated the graphics to be on BL2 level (surprisingly large difference), but they also added even more guns and cosmetic stuff, plus included the SHiFT codes system which were not introduced until much later.

If you want a more story-oriented order for when to play the DLCs, here is the list I've compiled over time from reading articles and preparing for a potential nearly-blind (I've only played halfway through BL1 myself) stream marathon:

  1. Borderlands 1 GOTY Enhanced Edition (all the way to the end)

    • The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned
    • Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot (hint: enter it early in the game, but don't do any of the activities, to activate the only "bank" in the game, but you'll have to enter it with a new save at some point to rewatch the opening cutscene before playing, although that's not actually necessary)
    • The Secret Armory of General Knoxx (will contain spoilers if played too soon, plus the Final Secret Boss is nearly impossible if you're underleveled)
    • Claptrap's New Robot Revolution
  2. Borderlands 2 (this gets a little complicated)
(edit: apparently, there's also a "Creature Slaughter Dome" DLC which becomes available after accepting the Wildlife Preservation mission; it is a monsters-only variant of the 5-round arena, similar to Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, and as such contains no spoilers and can be done at any time once the location opens)

  • Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty (any time after Rising Action main mission, but don't wait too long)
  • Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre (any time after Wildlife Preservation main mission)
  • Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage (any time after Where Angels Fear to Tread main mission, although others have said it's better story wise to wait until you've completed the main story line, and still others have said it doesn't matter if you do, and doing so will cause you to be overleveled and not enjoy it... although if you do a second playthrough before starting any DLC it apparently unlocks the level limits so they all level with you and this becomes irrelevant)
  • The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Watle Gobbler (any time after Toil and Trouble main mission)
  • T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest (after completing the main game story line)
  • Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep (now has a standalone version that has been a little more fleshed out as a lead-in to Tiny Tina's Wonderland, but that's a spin-off so not included here, and one of the few DLC that have major spoilers for the main story)
  • How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day
  • Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax
  • Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt
  1. Borderlands the Pre-Sequel (while it comes between BL1 and BL2, do NOT play this one before 2, it has a LOT of spoilers)

    • Shock Drop Slaughter Pit (originally a pre-order bonus, included for free with Handsome Edition; it's just an arena like BL1's Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot so it can be done any time you're physically capable of it ... no indication of when that is, I guess trial and error it?)
    • The Holodome Onslaught (same concept as above, a side arena that has zero bearing on the story, but it's tougher than the Shock Drop Slaughter Pit; I've seen around level 25 mentioned)
    • Claptastic Voyage (contains spoilers, only play after completing the main game; apparently too big to fit on the Disc version, requires a separate free download if you didn't buy the digital version)
  2. (optional) Tales From the Borderlands (keep in mind this is technically a spin-off, although set immediately after the events of Borderlands 2, and Telltale Games has ceased to exist so finding a copy may be difficult)

  3. Borderlands 2 (return just to do this DLC)

    • Digistruct Peak (I don't know why this one is here, just go with it, I guess)
    • Commander Lilith and the Fight For Sanctuary
  4. Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition (literally all I've found is the following: complete the game, then play the DLCs in release order. That release order is as follows, although I would assume the last two are more or less merged into the main game once purchased and not played separately)

    • Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot
    • Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainright and Hammerlock
    • Bounty of Blood
    • Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck
    • Designer's Cut (adds an extra skill tree to each Vault Hunter, plus an Arms Race mode which says "This endlessly replayable mode is a mad dash to gear up your Vault Hunter from scratch and extract the best loot you can find, lest you die and lose it all")
    • Director's Cut (additional missions/bosses, behind-the-scenes extras such as concept art and storyboards, and three sets of themed collectibles in the form of 3 Vault Cards, only one of which can be active at one time and appears to be purely cosmetic loot/gear drops)

Ok so i have played the second game trough once , havent rly touch much of the DLC.

My friend have no experience at all with the series tho.

I'm mostly interested in the Borderlands 2 cause as much as i dont like FPS games it is one of my favourite games ever so i wanted him to try it out :p

We are going to start with it and see if we continue with the rest of the series from there i guess , the list you complied is amazing tho so thanks for sharing it :)

Definitelly going to stick with it for the most part starting from 2 and going forward.,
