I'm looking around the store for RPGs/JRPGs, and I'm curious as to what others think are good games under this category.

I'm open for anything, just list it below and I'll check it out!

+1 for the Ys series, god damn those games were absolutely fantastic. My favorite is Origins because the characters had some personnality, unlike Adol (who's basically Gordon Freeman with red hair). Also I prefered the whole setting.

Forward to the Sky doesn't count as a jRPG; it's a puzzle platformer.

I think I just mistook it with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

It is. The last third is a torture though. Still, a great JRPG (even though it was made in the West) with a fun combat system and great characters.

I disagree. No offense LCF, but that game was terrible. The gameplay was boring and unsatisfaying, and the story was terrible too. I have a feeling the sequel is gonna be great though...

It's just, I wonder how they could release a game where the only thing worthwile going on in the story is at the very end of the game.

Well, it's quite boring if you play it more than 3 hours a day.
I just play it casually.

For stories: Planescape: Torment. It still has the best story of any CRPG that I've ever played (and I've played quite a few).

By RPG you mean the usual action-oriented dungeon crawlers like Skyrim or actual RPGs? If the latter, jimnms' list written above is perfect:
Wasteland 2
Divinity: Original Sin
Pillars of Eternity
Expeditions Conquistador
Shadowrun
Shadowrun Returns

In my mind I was actually thinking of things like Dragon Age or Diablo III, but everyone has given really good suggestions. Thanks for all these, I'll look more into them!

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, those two are the two end of the spectrum. Dragon Age is a cRPG, which indeed has a focus on combat, but the main driving force is the story. Diablo 3 is a looter. The whole game's point is to kill endlessly and get better and better pants. It has a good story, but it is not even secondary but tetriary.
This is why I asked what is important to you. Killing & looting, or story? The above ones are about the story and character vhoices foremost.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd have to say story-driven then. I don't mind the endlessly killing RPGs either, I'm fine with anything in between the two or strictly one or the either. That's the purpose of the thread, for me to find games I've never heard of or haven't considered.

But I guess if I had to pick..story-driven is nice. I especially like the games where your choices branch off into different possibilities, or can change how the story progresses.

Then Mass Effects, Fallout: New Vegas. All about choices and consequences.

I know nothing on the Witcher series, but I keep hearing good things about it. Thanks!

If I can suggest something, I'd like to say that IMO the Witcher games should be played with voiceovers in the original language. I think it contributes to the atmosphere, and if you don't actually speak that language, you can try and imagine that's how characters are actually speaking in that world.

Have you ever tried the Banner Saga? I bought it recently and just fell in live with it, I'd recomend giving it a try if you like story-based rpg.
Also, Child of Light should be pretty good!
