I would ay it depends on what your doing. If your goal is just to talk with friends at your own time and just have fun, then a headset makes sense. Audio is only for you on your headset and the mic sits near your face no matter how much you move around.
An external mic probably makes more sense if the audio quality is important and you have a pace where you want to record your face (for example, to make videos or livestreams). Also your not forced to have headphones on while using the mic if that matters to you.

I do /want/ good sound quality...but it also sounds like a huge pain on a day-to-day.
