Please at least add option to have a Captcha for entering giveaway. I think this would be nice option to have.

But user will ask:

  • Can I enter the giveaways on the phone DIRECTLY?
  • I only use Nokia 3310, how can I install the app on it?

Also I think bot will just use PC 2FA software like WinAuth to get the code, which defeat the purpose. XD

Think it's normal person who will leave Sg. We seen it on Indiegala. It was horrible then you have to try 3 times a capcha for each giveaway.... Try it on phone and cry....

Those picture ones really suck. I never know why I get it wrong.... The traffic ones.
But if SG implements the captcha, only include "I'm not a robot" one. Anyways doesn't matter, we won't really get affected except at some time when the new good bundles get released.

Yes, the selecting images, typing words are annoying as hell, but just including click on "I'm not a robot" one isn't annoying. Solves the issue.
Once you pass that check/captcha they'll be sure that you are not running any scripts so I don't think there will be any more captcha to annoy you anymore for certain time. Let's say 5 min or 10 min, that is enough for anyone to go through any massive trains or GAs or even spending you full 300P in 30 GAs with 10P each.
This issue is targeted to users who use scripts to automatically join GA.

Indeed, I got even got blacklisted today twice, probably for exactly that comment. That's ok, I even know who blacklists me - people who constantly make private giveaways. I also make giveaways and I really don't care all that much who will enter them..except I prefer if more than 5 enters them.

I use scripts, I don't consider it a bad thing, they make my life easier. I can enter all "group" and "wishlist" giveaways with one click away. Joining them one by one is tedious. But if anyone wants to blackmail me for that, they have right to do it.

Why stop there? Let's also have SG require you to confirm every entry by sending you a confirmation email that will hold a code you will need to enter into the captcha to unlock it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know you're being sarcastic, but email confirmation is not intended to prove one is human, but rather their identity. If there's suspected abuse like auto-joining, using a captcha would be a good enhancement. If there's suspected account theft, using email confirmation would be good (and is indeed what Steam is doing occasionally).

I vote yes for captcha, but only in cases where the user behavior hints that they may be using auto-joining scripts, e.g. if they enter many giveaways within a very short time-frame or are entering giveaways 24x7.

I'd love to hit you with a sarcastic reply, but what you are saying is just too reasonable! I agree that what you're suggesting would be a good addition to fight the against suspicious behavior, but I wouldn't like it as a feature that affects all from the get-go - mostly because I find myself often failing at captcha.

No captchas are awful if you block all the Google tracking and therefore you don't get to just click the checkmark so no bumping >:(

Also there are literally extensions that solve captchas for you. I got one a couple of days ago and it works wonders.

It's the only defense again bots or people just wanting to join everything as simple as possible without triggering SteamGifts autojoin suspension (and just look at how someone made a fork of ESGST because they don't want to click two times instead of one).

It should be either that the giveaway creator can turn it on/off (in-case of expensive AAA gibs for instance) or a "polite" system; e.g. when it detects suspicious behavior (e.g. borderline cases of auto-joining or not) it will show a capcha, or after every x giveaways entered within a certain time period, etc.

Perhaps CG can add a filter, so people may filter out capcha giveaways if they wish. It'll find a winner no matter what and if gives a bit extra chance to people willing to put a few seconds extra in. :)

IMO the best defence is to just smack the auto joiners with the permanent bannhamer without mercy and avoid to inconveniencing the rest of the users with annoying Captchas <I am going to censor a bit of the comment here because I don't want to give people ideas, I will send you the part in private chat :) >

I will say that actually use that fork now (I got around that "feature" on my own already yesterday, but using that fork is easier), but I will also quote myself "And don't get me wrong, I do read almost every single one of the group/whitelist/wishlist/DLC/pack GA descriptions, it is just the public ones I can't be arsed because 99% of the time are absolutely nothing of any use and are a waste of time." because I don't just use it to blindly enter everything. And to be fair your descriptions are usually the ones fit in the first category (of the ones that I do normally check) that I don't usually check because every time I did it was just the stuff I saw when I checked the game in the store anyways and I know my PA rules :P hides in the mouse hole pls don't eat me

I like the filter idea for GAs actually, more filters are always good and supports lazy people like me :D

Maybe it takes you only a few seconds, for me it always takes way longer.
When I have to do a capcha, it will be a good day if it takes me less than 8-10 tries.

Fortunately this suggestion has never gotten much traction here. But if steamgifts adds capcha, I'll leave the site right that moment. No way I will be dealing with capcha.

Let's really not. Once captchas were merely annoying but the odd unreadable letters/numbers could be dealt by hitting refresh where google ones these days are basically keep trying until it glitches and lets you through because what it is asking and what it wants are, at best, only tangentially related. I am pretty sure robots find them easier to deal with since that is all they have to do while for me- if it is something I really, really want- give a few tries inevitably fail and move on with my life now ignoring whatever site used it.

I remember once I kept trying out of morbid curiosity and a desire to prove myself right, ten minutes later with many refreshes of the page I give up and for the last time just pick at random completely unrelated to what it asked me to click on. Obviously this is when google says I got it 'right' and lets me through.

No, captchas these days are the proof there is no limit to human evil and malice. Whoever makes them a requirement fully deserves everything going to shit.

Damn, I couldn't agree more.

Clicking twelve buses (half of which are delivery vans or only show one headlight of the bus at some odd angle) or traffic signals (that are so small and distant only an eagle could spot them) only to be told to start over is a real bitch and a half.

Holy @#$!balls, Batman! Do you know how long that would take to enter GAs? You would single-handedly end this community. Just no.

(and why did you necro this thing? It's been debated and put to bed...the actual active community thinks it's a terrible idea. If you want to limit entries, create a puzzle GA or something...doesn't have to be complicated, just a quick jigidi or similar low-effort puzzle)

There is no official response of CG as of yet that I know off. Keeping the suggestion alive shows some people still want it, so implementing it as an option for giveaway creators should be considered. And may I ask the reason why you put a sometimes high level 6+ requirement on your public giveaways?

Terrible idea. While I can understand the reasoning for the existence of captcha, i have to say that all the implementations i've ever come across are seriously fucked. and i don't believe that to be a shortcoming of captcha developers but rather a limitation of the goal itself.

why do i hate captcha?:

  • it's annoying
  • if you are privacy-conscious and decide to use a vpn, most every captcha out there will give you hell: expect to have to solve more puzzles than anybody else just so you can have a small sliver of privacy (hey, I don't want my ISP to know my shopping habits or about all the porn I watch)

why do i think they are worthless?:

  • AI has improved to the point that many captchas can be defeated. And for when that fails, they can just crowd-source it out to India for fractions of a penny/click. Don't believe me? In the last year while working at a Fortune 500 company, a manager on one of the QA groups was seeking to do just that (albeit for testing a workflow with captcha their own site but still).
  • Captchas by design have to be simple FOR HUMANS TOO. That doesn't just include privileged kids with perfect hand/eye co-ordination. That also includes folks that are non-english speakers AND people with disabilities such as hearing and vision problems. But by catering to everyone, there is an implicit flaw that allows AI to catch up and overcome them. I am fortunate enough to have good vision thanks to lasik but even with high resolution on a large monitor, I have a hard time making out many images in captcha. I can't imagine how bad people with vision problems hate them.
  • even google's captcha is pretty bad. Putting aside the complaints above, even the directions kinda suck. Click all the pictures with a "car", you say? Well, do you mean "car" literally as in only sedans, coups, hatchbacks, etc or do you mean how "car" is commonly used as a generic fill-in for "automobile" (which can include trucks and vans also)? Click the "motorcycle", you say? Does that include scooters too; or just harleys etc? Oh, and should I consider the person on the motorcycle or its mirror which are in other squares to count or leave them off? Does a pedestrian crossing light count as a "traffic light" or do you just mean the ones for the vehicles? You might say captcha analyzes trends so it doesn't matter. But the truth is that is that the devil is in the details and the DETAILS DO MATTER.
  • It wastes peoples' time. While I'm working through 5x the normal # of slides because I'm on a vpn, Jamal's pondering the lack of clarity on directions, Steve assumed the wrong thing and had to do it over, Jenny's grandma got confused, and Rita can't make out the damn fuzzy images because she's got a migraine and her eyes are watering. and Raj misunderstood because he has to use English at work and that;s not his first language. All those fractions of a second add up. It's like Superman III but with time instead of money (except that "time is money", right?).

//end "i hate captcha" rant

I'd be down for a Captcha check every 50-100 entries a user makes. I don't mind spending a few seconds each day or every other day if it means those with bots/scripts get tripped up a bit. It'd definitely make automating multiple accounts for farming more difficult and tedious, if not impossible.
