I just wonder, I can play RPG games at 35-40fps with no problem (even 30), strategy games at 30fps but I have recently beaten Hard Reset which is a fast paced first person shooter and it was a torment to finish at 38-45fps. In multiplayer shooters I just simply cannot play below 60 fps or vsync off.

Here's a list of couple of games I play with varied FPS values:

  • Skyrim (High, 2xAA) 35-40 fps (60+ indoors)
  • Fallout series (High 2xAA) 45-60 fps
  • TF2 (Max, 4xAA) 60+ fps
  • Hard Reset (max, 2xAA) 38-45 fps
  • Civilization V (max( 40-50 fps

I used to play tf2 at around 20-30 FPS average is either 21-24 FPS depending on what's going on. .. and as a sniper , I was able to snipe quite well..
Now I got a new PC I can easily play TF2 at its highest settings and still get frame rates greater than 60 FPS. Playing as a sniper or a scout .. I was able to get more kills than I used to have. ( well you would expect skills to improve as time pass.. but before I got a new PC I had to stop all my gaming activities for A year and as I am not like any gamers out there my skills decreased as time pass, ofc gaining back the skills isn't all that hard. )

For other games ( single player ) .. 25FPS or 30++ FPS would be playable for me. Playing crysis 2 and metro 2033 on my 7670m :p 20-40FPS is pretty much fine xD

Well I get 60 FPS in LoL, I saw someone the other day who plays with 120 FPS. Above 50 I think is good enough to be able to play without any problems

If I can notice it, it's unacceptable.

I'll always try to get more than 60 FPS. Less than that and I will feel nauseous when playing it. Usually reducing the resolution to 800x600 helps for unoptimized games like Dead Island.

And to think I once got excited about being able to play games in SVGA for the first time.

Believe me, playing games in 800x600 wont make you throw up.

I've played in 640 earlier, so yes, it will.

To me it's just slightly blurry for most games. And everything looks bigger, nothing much too different. Well on some games I'm forced to play in higher res because it gets way too blurry because they simply stretch everything (eg. Bioshock Infinite), in those cases I have to lower everything else to minimum.

The standard display resolution of the NES is 256x240, and we didn't throw up.
Kids these days. Less than 4k is "unacceptable"...

So people throw up now with things we used to play day after day?
Bullshit.

If something looks horrible, then it is. Just because it was the standard long ago, doesn't mean it is acceptable today.

I remember the good old days when 800x600 and a stable FPS of 20 was fine~

The standard display resolution of the NES is 256x240, and it was SUPER.
Nowadays 720p is "crappy". Soon even 1080p will be shit.

I try to aim for 60, but 30 is fine for me.

Also, interesting website: 30 FPS vs 60 FPS

That site is bullcrap for me. I can't be possibly playing on 30 FPS and it's not even close to what they show there. That right could be actually playable.

Highly depends on the game.
20fps for some, if the quality makes up for it, 30 is usual, 40 is enough for me. No need to go any higher for me.

Depends most of the time, FPS games have to be 40-60~. While strategy games can be 30-60

Since the arms deal update I've been having horrible FPS problems with CSGO (CLICKY) and nothing seems to help. In 5v5 I get stable 100+ FPS, but in public servers it routinely drops to around 20, and I've had it go down to 5 a few times.

FPS games = 60 - 120 frames p/s. Great example is Counter Strike, less than 60 fps your aim is getting worse and you can notice that game it self is lagging. So, cap "60 stable" or 120 is the best for it. RPG games 30 to 60.

The lag es coming from vertical sync when its droping below 60 turn it off and the lag will be gone but you will be stuck with screen tearing.

30 is acceptable minimum. My PC is 7 years old now but still pretty good. Older last-gen games run at 30-60 with no problem. Only the newest titles have to be adjusted to get satisfying effect. Maybe when I'll buy new rig my preferences will change, but it's a distant future. I still haven't played hundreds of my games, which run perfectly fine on my computer.

Woah I can't believe how you guys can play with 24 fps or even 15! I mean I understand if you are forced to because of your system (I only have a GT620m too). I've once tested Skyrim limited to 30fps and forgot to turn off the fps limiter and I played with it for a few hours (it felt a bit choppy first but then I got used to it), but 24-15fps? It's just super choppy.

As long as game not freezes and mouse moves "(no idea which word would explain this in english)"...
In other words, stable fps (even 10) can be enough for games.

No examples here, but to answer in short: any constant frame rate above 25fps.

There is no real minimum fps, it's more dependable on every individual and the type of game. What makes people sick (sometimes, literally) is the fluctuation in the fps. That's why a constant frame rate is desirable.
One can achieve cfps by syncing with the monitor refresh rate, but this sometimes introduces control lag depending on the implementation.

Movies go at around 25 fps. And although they can't be directly compared, it's a rate I have found comfortable enough in many situations provided it's constant. Once again, it depends really con the type of game.
In competitive online action games, you would like to have the highest possible to eliminate fps as a cause for you sucking. :P

I really cant go below 30, the lag is too noticeable for me to overlook it, rendering the game unplayable.

30/45/60+

30 is the minimun necesary, far from ideal but playable in the worst scenario.

45 is nice but you will still note some "lag"

60+ no problem here.

120 i guess it is nice but never played with a 120 hz monitor so couldn`t know.

I used to be alright even with 20-30 but now, for most of the games, 45+ is playable for me.
