i recently bought a 3DS XL with monster hunter and i'm looking for recomendation of games to play. my favorite genres are RPG and strategy. My wishlist is currently fire emblem and devil survivor overclocked.
Feel free to recomend any game that you like. I'm a gamer that enjoyes all kind of experiences.
It is also important to note that i skipped the DS generation so you are free to recomend any of those "old" games too.
My 3DS library is:

  • tales of the abyss (playing now)
  • zelda ocarina of time (backlog)
  • ace combat (finished)
  • ghost recon shadow wars (finished)
  • monster hunter 3 (playing now)

My DS library is:

  • zelda spirit tracks (playing)
  • both advance wars (war room is giving me some trouble to clear)

tl;dr: recomend me some good or excelent 3DS or DS games.

The only two games I have are Devil Survivor Overclocked (beat the original on DS like 4 times, still had a good time beating Overclocked another 4 times) and Virtue's Last Reward. I highly recommend it, but the experience will be better if you play 999 on DS first.

A friend just recommended that game to me, is it really that great? I played the demo and didn't understand it really well.

i don't know 999 or virtue's last reward. can you talk a bit more about the games without making any major spoilers?

Think locked room puzzle game with visual novel elements. Gameplay is a bit underwhelming (mostly just reading text like a visual novel, with puzzles spread throughout to escape from rooms), but it's all about the story. Basic story: trapped on ship, need to escape. If you like thrillers and mysteries, you can't get any better than those two games.

I assume you have no problem with visual novel style, since Devil Survivor is on your wishlist.

If you are gonna play a yugioh game then just play the latest ds one, don't go back to 2011, the only difference is that the knew ones have all the cards. The story is laughable in them anyway.

If you're playing Spirits Tracks and enjoying it, get Phantom Hourglass, I enjoyed it much more.
Also try Paper Mario Sticker Star, I beat it recently and it was great.
If you haven't played it on other consoles, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D (It's story it's really enjoyable even if you haven't played any MGS).
Resident Evil Revelations it's really cool too, playing it at night really sets you in the mood.

For the DS, I'd recommend the Ace Attorney franchise.

i'm indeed enjoying spirit tracks. i bought spirit tracks because it was much cheaper then phantom hourglass.
what kind of game is paper mario sticker star? is it the "normal" platformer version?
I have never played MGS before. This game might be interesting, i'll keep my eye out.
If i remember correctly resident evil requires another thumbstick, which i don't have. I also have no idea if the bundle packed thumbstick works on the 3DS XL.
thank you very much for the interesting recomendations!

Don't worry about the circle pad, they recommend it for Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and also for Monster Hunter. I don't have it and I didn't have any troubles, the only difference in Revelations is that you won't be able to move while firing like in RE 4 and 5 (although you can do it if you set it to aim moving the DS around like in Ocarina of Time) and you will have to aim with ABXY buttons in MGS, but it's not big deal at all.

Paper Mario is a RPG-like game, it's a turn based game where you attack using stickers that you buy or collect. Every time you attack, you lose a sticker, and as you proceed, you'll find different stickers that gives you different attacks and more powerful versions of the ones you had. It has a great style (characters are made of paper and the scenary is made of cardboard. I suggest you watch some videos as I think I haven't explained myself very well.

Spirit Tracks is the sequel of Phantom Hourglass, though it happens long after it and the characters are the descendants, so it's not really important for the story. Actually, Phantom Hourglass is the direct sequel of The Wind Waker, which I'm playing right now.

Another Code: Two Memories
Contra 4, if you're willing to import
If you don't have PSP, I also recommend Metal Slug 7. The only complaint I had about it was its squished resolution, which got fixed in PSP version.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance on 3DS and maybe Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS if you can't wait for the PC, 360 & PS3 release. RE:R is kind of short but good gameplay and story, and KH3D is reasonable size story but a very good game.

I feel there is two must-haves and heard good things about a third

  1. Super Mario 3d land - great utilization of the 3d elements and a lot of fun
  2. Fire Emblem: Awakening - awesome cutscenes and good story
  3. Zero Escape - I've heard this is one of the best games for 3ds with a great story but I haven't bought it yet.

For the DS, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is awesome, probably as good as 999. The two Mario & Luigi game are a couple of good RPGs, as is Chrono Trigger, if you've never played it elsewhere. Rhythm Heaven and Elite Beat Agents are great rhythm/music games. Radiant Historia is another really good RPG with a number of very interesting twists (the main one is that you can travel along two different timelines, and learn stuff in one timeline that allows you to proceed in the other). Knights in the Nightmare is this intense kind of RPG/strategy/bullet hell game. It's tough to categorize, but it's insanely complicated in an awesome way. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a really well done point-and-click/visual novel game with a really nice story. Also, the Pheonix Wright and Professor Layton series are really good.

For the 3DS, Paper Mario Sticker Star is a nice RPG. Kid Icarus Uprising and Star Fox 64 3D are two really well done on-rails shooters. Super Mrio 3D Land is really well done as well.

Also, there are some really nice download games for the 3DS. Pushmo and Crashmo are these brilliant puzzle/platformers. The "Mighty" series (Might Flip Champs, Might Milky Way And Mighty Switch Force) are some really well done platformers (with some puzzling). There's also this dungeon crawler called Unchained Blades that was a full game in Japan, but is only downloadable elsewhere. It's got a full retail price, but I've heard that it's really well done for the genre, and it's quite long too.

unfortunatly SMT 4 doesn't have an european release date.
and as you expected i am indeed playing P4G for the vita. the vita for me is simply great, especially because of the japanese games with gundam and miku. However i also like the 3DS concept so i am looking to increase my knowledge of 3Ds games so that i don't miss a lot of great games. i love variety and i am lucky enough to be able to buy quite a few games:)
