Anticipating a sale at the conclusion of a game's life cycle from BANDAI NAMCO is overly optimistic.

When Project Cars 2 was being removed, it was on sale for ~90% discount in multiple stores, hopefully they do the same with this one.

Explains why it disappeared from the Humble Store. Hoping for a sale because its not worth it at full price.

I love how “AAA” car games are chronic for being delisted, removed, and in some instances become unplayable.

because license holders want money to renew it, and I guess they don't deem it worthwhile to maintain

We didnt ask for you to be salty for something that has actual legit legal reason either. Wierd to snap at something like that.

But yeah, it sucks that car games have to go through all the trouble with licensing and whatnot... One would think car makers would love the free marketing games give. As a car enthusiast I love driving around in some vehicle I havent even seen.

I like watching those video retrospectives/retro-reviews on racing games that quite a few youtube channels like to do and 90% of the time the game in question can only be played by "procuring" a copy from the "seven seas", often running it through emulation because re-releases are scarce. And it's not just historically relevant titles routinely getting discontinued, entire subgenres are either abandoned, barely alive, or stagnating in the AAA space because publishers have apparently given up on making cars go vroom vroom in favor of whatever is currently trending.
Good thing indies are trying to slowly fill in those emptied niches with new stuff.

Its sad really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_Drive_Unlimited - I loved this game a lot. Now you cant find it anywhere..... You pretty much have only one scenario in the end how to play it. Which is a bummer. I would love to actually buy this and play again on Steam or wherever.

I mean, in the vroom vroom genre you still have Dirt series, WRC series, Need For Speed, Wrekfest now. But Crew, Forza, Project cars - all are looking down the barrel of being delisted sooner or later.

Sir, I would like to inform that the original Test Drive Unlimited was never on Steam. "Only one scenario in the end how to play it" - not the case with TDU, you can still play it today the same way you played it in 2007 - from a disc copy on your Xbox 360/Windows/PS2/PSP. Only the online aspect is gone, but understandably so.

Test Drive Unlimited 2, however, falls into the 'modern' delisting pit - it used to be available on Steam but hasn't been for years now. It's still playable just like the original - from a disc copy, albeit cannot be purchased in digital storefronts anymore. Multiplayer doesn't work either, we have to rely on third party software (like Project Paradise - I highly recommend this one) to go online. Certain achievements aren't obtainable anymore - also a modern issue.

"you still have Dirt series, (...) Need For Speed" - Dirt series is notable for being one of the regularly delisted, only the latest two entries now remain purchasable in digital storefronts. NFS - the situation is much better, but some have been delisted, like Shift or Undercover and some more are due to be delisted, like Rivals.

Oh, I know it wasnt on steam. I just said I would love the chance to buy it on any of the platforms today. And as for the CD - where do you even get that anymore.. So we are back at the "only way" IMO.

But yes, TDU2 as well.. Lost due to the delisting. I am not even that keen on getting multiplayer for the old games, but would love to just enjoy them at all, which we cant unfortunately.

And of course - undoubdedly we have lost good amount of NFS and Dirt games as well. What I meant was, not all publishers have given up on making racing games (as an answer to Axelflox). They are still creating new (IMO good) games in these series. And while we still have the issue with games being delisted, we are back at the sad fact, that manifacturers simply dont care about the gaming side and benefits from it and we are left with licensing issues.

Dirt, WRC, and NFS are published by EA, and that means that they're in the list for eventual delisting. Last I heard there were no plans for a new WRC, and Codemasters and Criterion (the two big racing studios still remaining under EA) have been crippled by firings and tossed into the role of support teams. So we should probably be getting a new NFS at some point but other than that any racing franchise by EA might as well be considered dead for the next few years with the old entries slowly being delisted as licensing expires. On the bright side I'm sure someone else will pick up the WRC license now and use it.

Reminds me of how at one point Sega just gave up on racing games and other that Sonic being spared every other series got dropped never to be seen again, and that's how if you want to play Outrun 2 (one of the coolest arcade racing games in my opinion) today there's basically no option other than hunting down and old copy or piracy.

Like, remember Ridge Racer? The other day I heard that apparently RR8 got cancelled not once but twice and that info just leaked out recently because someone found a prototype.

Didnt know that much in detail with EA , Codemastes and Criterion.. Sad to hear it.
EA WRC as I understood was not half bad. And even with the divided feedback on previous installments, I have enjoyed the WRC series. So yes, if EA does not continue making new installments, would love for someone else to pick it up.

Dirt though felt like had a great team behind them. Dirt Rally 1 and 2 both were brilliant. Both also listened to the playerbase and improved a lot on physics. I actually loved Dirt4 as arcade racer. Dirt 5 was a total miss though - quite obviously marketed at kids to keep buying flashy skins within the game (this is the EA I know....) but not offering any substential content in it (subpar physics, track design and without flashy colors pretty average visuals). Interesting to see now if what you say will dig the pit deeper for Dirt series ot will someone pick it up along with WRC.. Would suck to see both franchises to day off...

But sure - these along with NFS games are on the list of eventually being delistes, you are right. Unfortunately this is just expected until the whole legacy culture within vehicle manifacturing. As I said in the other comment - its beyond me how they dont see it as a great markting tool to show the world their cars. While of course for them it is another income stream, I think they could probably turn it around and gain bigger benefit than just requiring the media to shut down if it mentions their cars.

I wonder if this has been the issue with older titles (RR and outrun as well) or was it something else along the lines of publishers just killing off franchises.

With Outrun the issue 100% was that Sega could no longer secure the Ferrari license, they simply slightly changed the look of the car and replaced the car's logo for recent re-releases of the original Outrun but OR2 had a much larger number of Ferrari cars in it so they just stopped making new versions of it. I honestly would gladly take fictional off-brand cars in exchange for getting a remaster with all of the added content from OR 2006 C2C and OR HD, or an actual OR3.

And with Ridge Racer apparently each new entry was making less money than previous ones so Namco just stopped caring, it doesn't help than that series tradition was usually releasing just one or two entries per console (the big exception being the PS1 that got 4) right when they were launched. So RR8 got prototyped for both PS4 and Switch but didn't materialize on any, with Switch 2 having been released and no new RR announced the next chance would be the PS6 whenever that drops. BTW they always used fictional cars and original music as far as I'm aware so it's not a licensing issue.

Oh, and yeah, car manufacturers definitely don't see the benefit of promotion in legacy titles, they seem only interested in pushing the newest thing and disregard older games. I've also heard that the reason why visual car damage has gotten progressively nerfed over time is that the car brands pushed for their cars to only be shown looking pristine, meanwhile back in the day I remember that NFS Porsche Unleashed (back in like the year 2000) you could heavily deform your car from just gently colliding with another car while taking a corner, and that one had the car's manufacturer's name in the title of the game.

When the licenses in a racing game last way longer than the developer manages to survive being owned by EA.

This would be a bummer. If that really is the case, I would love to see the marketing / sales genius behind the choice.
If anyone hasnt bought it yet, they will most definitely not buy it when being delisted. Running a 90% sale though can easily rack up the remaining player base that either missed the game, didnt want it at full price or outright just wants to try it out. Perfect scenario for injecting last life into the game + generating buzz for a new game. But I guess corporations do employ unenthusiastic unprofessional unqualified nitwits who have no idea what they are doing.
