sadly, not a happy pride for me as queer rights are being eroded everywhere.
pride month over the years has devolved into a competition on which company can make the most money by pandering to us.
as we've been seeing as of late, those companies don't actually care about queer people; they care about capital and are willingly taking away our rights for their sustenance.
queer people will always exist, no matter how much they want to kill us, but we are not safe in this world as long as it continues dehumanising us.
regardless, i'm hoping for happiness for all of us, not just this month, but year-round. love, courage and strength to all my siblings 💖

Sad but true. In times like these, I think of Pride month as a time to remind each other that we are still here, that we can always do more for each other and that we support each other through the darkest time.
It's a reminder to love yourself and to love others. And something we can use more of all year. But once a year we maybe pay more attention.

There's more and more cruelty for cruelty's sake these days, it's so disheartening. Maybe I'm online too much(!) and all I see now is a race to be the edgiest of edgelords but IRL there's also many people in positions of power, lacking empathy, emboldening and amplifying the worst of human nature. I just hope the tide can change again soon.
Stay strong 💖

Any recent movie/tv show or game you'd like to recommend?
I started watching The Four Seasons on Netflix. Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani make a really cute couple and I feel there aren't many shows that portray lasting queer couples past their 30ies. Definitely can recommend.

Two that may have went under the radar...

A little bit of wholesome, a little bit of strange.

If you're into sharp British humor and love a good mix of sass and sentiment, Vicious (2013–2016) is a must-watch. It’s about an aging gay couple living together for decades - they bicker constantly but care deeply. Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi are hilarious and surprisingly touching. Think sitcom meets stage play with a queer twist! 💫

I've started Handmaid's Tale, because it was mentioned so much in light of recent developments in the US. Chilling, deep and addicting. I can't watch horror or suspense-focused shows, but this one is different. Perhaps because there is no cruelty or violence just to shock the viewer. It's a show about dehumanisation that at the same time manages to humanise their characters, especially the oppressed ones. (Though I guess everyone is kind of oppressed in this dystopia).
For feel good stories: I can't recommend Our Flag Means Death enough. I think it's soon time for my second rewatch.

Oh, and: 'Call Me Mother' as the wholesome Canadian version of Drag Race that skips the constant infighting between contestants and staged drama.

The Handmaid's Tale is a great book. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes the show.
The horror in it is all too real, and not the kind that you can easily shrug like gore movies.
Margaret Atwood wrote it back during the Reagan Era when politics in the US took the turn they've been on since then, and drew from the situation in Iran so yeah it's sadly too real.
The follow-up book she wrote after the show started of course updated things a bit with current events. Also very recommended. I think they're making a spin-off next year of The Handmaid's Tale from it.

Definitely need this. It's been on my watchlist forever but I think now is the time.

I always recommend Portrait of a Lady on Fire, it's one of the most beautiful and intelligent queer love stories I've ever seen on screen.

I still haven't seen this one, even though it's been on my watchlist since it released. Good idea.
Watching it this weekend.
it's one of the most beautiful and intelligent queer love stories I've ever seen on screen.
And we are still thoroughly missing on that, which is kinda crazy. The number of queer characters has increased at least but they still too rarely are protagonists and when they are, the writing can be sub-par.

A groundbreaking movie. And yes it's tragic and true to its time period but it's definitely not the kind of tragic that queer characters were required to suffer during the Hays code years. Also great acting so it's thumbs up all around.
We do get more positive portrayals these days and it's necessary but it doesn't mean we should forget the great queer stories of the past.
Shirley McLaine said the script had more "overt" scenes about her character's love for Hepburn's but they were ultimately cut for fear critics would react negatively to the movie.
Which reminds me: if you haven't seen The Celluloid Closet, it's a really great documentary about queer actors and storytelling in Hollywood during the Golden Era.
